The undercutter attaches directly to your existing lathe and automatically undercuts the mica in less time than manual methods. It not only works faster, the CU sys- tem also reduces the amount of finish work because of the precise cutting action of the saw and floating spin- dle. The CU Automatic Undercutter uses laser technology to precisely position the cutting saw for accurate mica removal. Manual methods rely on the operator’s skill and ability to visually align the cutter in the slot. The floating spindle of the CU follows skew in the mica slot, and the climb cut rotation of the saw produces smooth cuts requiring less clean-up. The CU Automatic Undercutter pays for itself in a short time by reducing the man hours needed for complete motor rebuilding. Set up is fast, and the operator is free to complete other tasks during the undercutting opera- tion. The CU increases the efficiency of your shop and improves the quality of the finished armatures. Floating spindle follows skew in the mica slot To justify the investment in this equipment, simply compare the labor to set up the undercutter to the total labor presently spent on manual undercutting. The set-up time for this undercutter is short compared to the several hours that can be spent hand undercutting a large commutator. This undercutter’s consistent results may also help reduce clean-up time. This tool is intended to be used on lathes that swing armatures at least 16” (406mm) diameter. If the lathe does not have this swing, it may still be pos- sible to modify the unit to make it fit. The unit can be set-up quickly as it has basically 3 components. 1. The UL Undercutting Head that fits in the lathe T-slot. The base of the undercutting head is man- ufactured to fit one lathe. Additional adapters can be made for other lathes you may have in house. 2. The Indexing Attachment that fits over the bedways. The enduser sends a data chart showing dimensions of the lathe bedways so the base of the attachment can be made to mount easily on the lathe. 3. The Control Console on its own pedestal. The console can be moved next to the lathe when needed.
