Broncos tame Lions to make it 3-0 for season; Steelers top Rams
Milestone for Brady as Pats rompLOS ANGELES, Sept 28,(Agencies): New EnglandPatriots quarterback TomBrady on Sunday becamejust the fourth player tothrow 400 career touchdownpasses in the NationalFootball League (NFL).
Just before half-time, Brady foundwide receiver Danny Amendola inthe end zone from one yard as thereigning Super Bowl championPatriots took control against theJacksonville Jaguars.
The Patriots led the Jaguars 20-3 at theinterval before rolling to a commanding51-17 victory.
“It was a good day, so it’s fun to be outthere,” Brady told reporters after com-pleting 33 of 42 passes for 358 yards, twotouchdowns and no interceptions as NewEngland improved to 3-0. “I think every-one enjoyed it.
Brady joins an elite club. PeytonManning of the Denver Broncos is theall-time NFL leader with 533 touchdownpasses ahead of Sunday night’s gameagainst Detroit, followed by the retiredBrett Favre (508) and Dan Marino (420).
A four-time Super Bowl championwith New England, Brady started thisseason after a federal judge overturned afour-game suspension imposed by theNFL for his alleged role in deflating foot-balls during a playoff game last season.
He has once again proved his value asone of the greatest quarterbacks of alltime, guiding his team to a 3-0 start, andhe received boisterous cheers from thePatriots crowd on Sunday as they repeat-edly chanted his name.
Broncos 24, Lions 12The Denver Broncos have failed to
reinvent themselves as a run-first teamthis season, yet their old Peyton Manningformula and a ferocious defense havethem atop the NFL.
When new head coach Gary Kubiakarrived in Denver he vowed to emphasizethe ground game to take pressure off hisaging quarterback, but thus far his visionhas not materialized.
The Broncos defeated the DetroitLions 24-12 on Sunday and improved to3-0 despite rushing for just 41 yards onthe night.
What Denver has learned thus far isthat they may need to rely on their airattack more than they had hoped.
They entered the contest against the
Lions averaging just 65 rushing yards pergame, and they failed to even reach thatmark.
Neither of the team’s primary runners,C.J. Anderson nor Ronnie Hillman, hasdistinguished himself which is alarmingfor a Kubiak coached team.
In Kubiak’s 20 previous seasons as ahead coach or offensive coordinator, histeams have featured a 1,000-yard runningback in 15 of those campaigns.
While Manning has launched an aerialassault on the NFL throughout his career, the franchise knows they must create arunning threat in order to succeed in theplayoffs where the Broncos fell in theirdivisional round last season.
On the bright side, this year’s versionof the Broncos has shown off a stoutdefense. The defensive unit entered thenight leading the NFL in fewest yardsallowed and most touchdowns scored.
Denver terrorized quarterbackMatthew Stafford in their latest win, sacking him four times and recording twointerceptions.
Steelers 12, Rams 6In St Louis, Ben Roethlisberger was
carted off the field with a knee injury inthe second half and Pittsburgh’s defensecame through to give the Steelers a 12-6victory over the St. Louis Rams onSunday.
Le’Veon Bell scored from a yard out inthe first half in his first game back after asuspension, but the Steelers’ focus will beon the status of their star quarterback.Roethlisberger’s leg got caught under-neath him on a diving, sliding sack byMark Barron.
There was no immediate word on theextent of Roethlisberger’s injury.
Will Allen’s interception with 1:56 leftset up a field goal by Josh Scobee to putPittsburgh (2-1) ahead by six points.
Falcons 39, Dallas 28In Arlington, Texas, Matt Ryan and
Julio Jones connected for two touch-downs and Devonta Freeman ran for 141yards and three scores as Atlanta beatDallas in the Cowboys’ first game with-out Tony Romo and Dez Bryant.
Freeman’s third score early in thefourth quarter capped a rally from a trioof 14-point deficits for the Falcons (3-0),who didn’t win their third game untilWeek 10 last year, and Week 13 in 2013.
Jones had his third straight 100-yardgame to start the season, finishing with164 and a clinching 2-yard score in thefourth quarter.
The Cowboys (2-1) had a six-gamewinning streak in the regular season bro-ken in backup quarterback BrandonWeeden’s ninth straight loss as a starter.
Weeden completed his first 16 passesto start the season, but the run ended witha second-quarter interception that turnedthe game in the Falcons’ favor.
Seahawks 26, Bears 0In Seattle, Tyler Lockett returned the
second-half kickoff 105 yards for atouchdown, Russell Wilson connectedwith Jimmy Graham on a 30-yard TD,and the Seahawks routed the under-manned Bears.
Seattle led just 6-0 at halftime, butLockett started a huge second half as hewent untouched on a perfectly executedreturn, the longest in franchise history.Later in the quarter, Wilson foundGraham across the middle for his secondtouchdown catch this season.
Steven Hauschka added four fieldgoals and the Seahawks started theprocess of erasing an 0-2 start.
