Largest Dam In The World

The Largest Dam In The World is located in China and it features the biggest concrete structure onearth. The Three Gorges Dam is sixty stories tall with a length of more than two kilometers. It took

more than seventeen years to build the dam and around forty thousand workers were needed. This

is a hydroelectric dam that has an electric generating capacity of 22, 500 MW.

The main body of the dam was completed in 2006 and it was fully functional in July of 2012. The

project was quite controversial because some cultural and archaeological sites were destroyed so

that it could be built. Over all the project is regarded as a great success by the Chinese government.

It is considered to be an historic engineering achievement as well as a social and economic success.

India Is Planning The WorldsLargest Floating Solar Farm

The National Hydro Power Corporation, the state-owned power company in India, will build a

floating photovoltaic project of 50 megawatts which will be the largest of its kind in continental

waters worldwide. The project, which is budgeted between 46.9 and 52.8 million, will be

installed in lakes and reservoirs in the region of Kerala and pilot operations are scheduled for

October of this year.

There are large stretches of water bodies in Kerala which NHPC wants to harness for solar power.

This floating solar power technology was developed by the Renewable Energy College and has been

implemented in the city. The first plant a pilot project is scheduled to be commissioned in

October this year. NHPC had contacted us for offering technical know-how and installation assistance

for their proposed 50-mw plant, said SPGon Choudhury, chairman of the Renewable Energy

College.

By building a floating solar farm, the Indian government has found a way to save money, since the

surface of lakes and reservoirs cannot be used for any other purpose. The government will pay,

however, an income to the owners of the land located near the water bodies they will use. It is

anticipated that the project has a total cost of 15% lower than the cost of a similar project

implemented on land.

Although the floating solar panels are intended only for the Kerala region, there is the possibility of

extending the project to neighboring states, since the southern regions have large water reservoirs.

It is expected that the final installation will have a capacity of 50 megawatts, surpassing the Japanese

installation of 1.2 megawatts installed in 2013 in Okegawa.

The Shenzhen Baoan InternationalAirport

The Shenzhen Baoan InternationalAirport is an eco-friendly airport that has now opened its doors

to travellers. The building has a somewhat futuristic look to it and it will take over from the three

airport terminals in China, which stopped operating following successful test runs on the new

terminal.

This stunning terminal is jaw dropping and an Italian architectural firm, FUKSAS, was behind the

design. They won the rights to design it following a competition that was held in 2008. The terminal

takes on the appearance of a mobula, which is the flying ray, with the connection being that in China

the word for blessed sounds a lot like mobula.

The Shenzhen Baoan InternationalAirportsnew terminal comes at a price tag which is said to be

around 8.5 billionYuan, which works out at $1.4 billionUS. The terminal is three times the size of

the old terminals combined together and it offers enough room for 76airplanes.

Terminal 3 is the most recent addition to the airport and the company behind the design did very

well when it came to the construction as it has taken just three years to complete. At the moment it

is considered to be the largest public building in the city, which happens to have the title of being

one of the fastest growing in the world. It features 200check-in counters and has space for more

than 200shops.

This eco-friendly terminal collects the rainwater, which is then used to maintain the indoor plants.

Another very interesting feature of the terminal is that it is the first to have as 10 megawattpower

plant and this provides the equivalent energy for supporting around 10,000homes in the US each

month. The airport also has a total of 116air conditioning units which are shaped like trees so they

blend in with the design of the terminal. These also double up as the fire equipment along with

public address system for the whole of the terminal.

The Shenzhen Baoan International Airport terminal 3 spreads out around1.5kmin length and has a

roof that spans around 80m. Looking at the building it seems as though it is organic in appearanceand it could have easily been shaped from the wind that has blown through the landscape. There is

an external along with internal double skin that is very striking and which takes on a honeycomb

appearance. This means that natural light is able to filter from outside right into the inside core of

the airport terminal. It does this at different angles, which creates stunning patterns and effects

inside the terminal. This is made possible by a layer of metal that has been shaped, along with panels

of glass that partially open.
