On Sunday, July 15th, he visited the 12th annual Arab-American Bazaar — a celebration of culture and tradition hosted by the Arab American Association of New York. Happy Independence Day! On Wednesday, July 4th, Borough President Adams marched alongside Staten Island Borough President James Oddo in the 108th annual Travis Parade, which has been held along Victory Boulevard in the historic village of Travis since 1911, making it the oldest continuous Fourth of July parade in the United States. Borough President Adams celebrated the rich diversity of Brooklyn’s music scene at a variety of outdoor festivals in July including on Sunday, July 8th at the 15th annual Soul Summit Music Festival in Fort Greene Park in Fort Greene; on Saturday, July 14th at the 14th annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, and on Saturday, July 21st as he took the stage at CurlFest in Prospect Park. On Stage At Kingsborough! On Saturday evenings throughout the month of July, Borough President Adams sponsored the “Hot Summer Nights!” concerts at Kings- borough Community College’s Lighthouse Bandshell in Manhattan Beach. In reponse to President Trump’s nomina- tion for the US Supreme Court seat vacat- ed by retiring Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, Borough President Adams and Representative Carolyn Maloney convened a protest outside the Thurgood Marshall Courthouse at Foley Square in Lower Man- hattan on Tuesday, July 10th to urge the US Senate to hold up the nomination until after the upcoming election. #FreeTheSilvas. Borough President Adams joined community leaders at the headquar- ters of Make the Road in Bushwick on Wednesday, July 11th to demand that Immi- gration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials release Concepción and Margarito Silva, an elderly couple who were detained as they were visiting their son-in-law serving in the US military at Fort Drum in Upstate New York. On Wednesday, July 24th, they were released from detention. Borough President Adams joined Mayor Bill de Blasio, Council Member Robert Cornegy Jr., and other community leaders on Wednesday, July 11th in celebrating the unveiling of the new Marcy Houses Com- munity Center, a first-of-its-kind at Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The new center will house programming for youth, seniors, and other residents to help improve AUGUST 2018 WWW.BROOKLYN-USA.ORG AUGUST 2018 WWW.BROOKLYN-USA.ORG Continued on next page In response to a land use application submitted by 57 Caton Partners, LLC to rezone a portion of a block bounded by Caton Place, East 8th Street, and Ocean Parkway in East Windsor Terrace, Borough President Adams unveiled his recommendations on Monday, July 2nd to approve the application as a means of encouraging the preservation of the Kensington Horse Stables nearby the current site location. His call, which formed part of his statutory Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) recommendation, encouraged the development of a state-of-the-art horse stables facility, which would preserve this historic institution that has been a hallmark of the local community since 1917. The stables have been a staple of the community, providing an enhanced quality-of-life for local residents as well as equestrian training for avid horseback riders from across the city, including children’s programs, lessons, pony rides, teen horsemanship, and trail rides. The current building, which was built in 1930, is the current home of the riding academy founded a century ago. Borough President Adams’ recommendation is based on his fervent support for retaining this public resource in proximi- ty to Prospect Park, benefitting the entire community, particularly young children who would have an invaluable recreational space to appreciate horseback riding and the great outdoors. His recommendations particularly note the importance of maintaining the programming that the stables provide without a cessation of their services to the community, while reducing impacts on the adjacent eastern portion of Windsor Terrace, and minimizing exposure of riders to motor vehicles travelling along Machate Circle separating the site from Prospect Park. LATEST INITIATIVES On Monday, July 16th, Borough President Adams joined Housing Rights Initiative (HRI) Executive Director Aaron Carr and the Law Office of Jack L. Lester in announcing a $10 million, 19-plaintiff lawsuit, filed in the Kings County Supreme Court, based on a comprehensive investigation by HRI that found that Kushner Companies engaged in illegal construction practices in a 338-unit building at 184 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. According to an independent lab analysis, families, including children and babies, were exposed to highly toxic and cancer-causing substances, including, but not limited to, the lung carcinogen crystalline silica and lead. At the announcement, which took place outside the Brooklyn Supreme Court in Downtown Brooklyn, Borough President Adams noted that “we must do all that we can legislatively and through our courts to ensure our laws not only protect tenants, but aggressively prosecute violators so that justice is served accordingly. What is taking place at 184 Kent Avenue is just a microcosm of a larger epidemic of tenant harassment across the borough. It’s why we have to deploy a CompStat-type mentality to addressing affordable housing protection and preventing tenant harassment. This mission is why I’ve funded and collaborated with non-profits like HRI that use data as a weapon in defense of tenants who are losing their homes in real time. Government has not been able to catch up to a real-time method to stop them. I am fighting to change that.” Amid a wave of anti-immigrant behavior, Borough President Adams encouraged local naturalization applicants to attend his annual Citizenship Drive on Saturday, July 21st in the Commu- nity Room and Rotunda at Brooklyn Borough Hall, which provided free assistance from trained legal experts. The effort was held in collaboration with Dominicanos USA, a Domini- can-American organization that aims to encourage civic, economic, and social engagement in the Dominican-American community, and NALEO Educational Fund, the nation’s leading non-partisan, non-profit organization, which aims to encourage civic engagement among Latino-Americans. The initiative, part of his ongoing “Embrace Your Hyphen” campaign encouraging Brooklynites to celebrate and learn about the borough’s vast ethnic and linguistic diversity through awareness campaigns, cultural programming, and media outreach, was a partnership with an extensive group of commu- nity and City agencies. The drive’s 200 attendees completed 120 citizenship applications. Additionally, the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) issued 55 benefit letters to waive the $725 cost of the application, which saved applicants $39,875 in fees. Borough President Adams joined the Food Bank of New York City in launching the “Woman to Woman Campaign,” a donation drive for feminine hygiene products on Tuesday, July 31st in the Rotunda at Brooklyn Borough Hall, which will serve as a collection site through October 31st. The drive, which is sponsored by Duane Reade by Walgreens, will collect and distribute basic essentials such as adult diapers, baby wipes, bath soap, deodorant for men and women, diapers, feminine wipes, soap, tampons, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to low-income and underserved women across Brooklyn. On average, women between the ages of 12 and 54 buy approxi- mately 250 feminine care products every year. These products are a financial burden to families already struggling and turns basic essentials into luxury products. Members of the public can also donate at an Amazon Wish List online, which can be found at foodbanknyc.org/womantowoman. UPCOMING EVENTS WHAT’S UP AT BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL? Eective on Monday, July 2nd, Borough President Adams announced new security upgrades at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Visitors to the building, including contrac-tors, consultants, and other agency employees, will now need to enter through the Adams Street entrance at Old Fulton Alley to be screened by a magnetometer and have bags checked through an X-ray machine. Visitors will only be allowed to enter the building through this side entrance after which they will be directed to the Police Desk in order to sign in and obtain directions as to where to go in the building. The Court Street entrance will be used as an exit only. If you have any questions about the enhanced security measures, please call our Constituent Assistance Center at (718) 802-3700 or email [email protected]. In response to a xenophobic verbal attack targeting a Muslim woman wearing a hijab on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s S53 bus from Bay Ridge to Port Richmond, Borough President Adams joined community leaders and women wearing the traditional hijab in leading an interfaith solidarity ride on Sunday, July 15th on the same bus route where the attack occurred in hopes of sending a message of unity. The encounter, which was captured on a video that went viral on social media, involved a woman who identified as “Ashley” yelling at a female in a headscarf, telling her “she thinks she has rights she does not have” and announcing that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ocers are “here for you.” Borough President Adams spoke to concerns of riders who may feel unsafe or unwelcome when moving around New York City as experts have previously noted evidence of a sustained spike in hate crimes both locally and nation-wide. Borough President Adams also called for the MTA to sponsor bystander intervention trainings for straphangers across the city who are interested in supporting their fellow neighbors. In another similar incident in early July, a South Korean woman interning in the city was verbally attacked and spat on on a Coney Island-bound N train disembarking at Stillwell Avenue, while being told to get out of the country.

On Tuesday, July 17th, the City announced that Citi Bike would become more accessible to New Yorkers, by expanding the bike sharing system’s $5 per month membership to those who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. To apply for the discount, SNAP recipients can visit the Citi Bike website at citibikenyc.com and enter their EBT card number or New York City Housing Authori-ty (NYCHA) tenant ID. NYCHA residents already enrolled in the discount program do not need to reapply. The new memberships do not require an annual commit-ment, and at $5 per month oer a 66 percent discount o the traditional price. The membership includes rides on 12,000 bikes at more than 750 stations in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Members will also be able to utilize dockless bike sharing in Coney Island. For more information and to check eligibility, visit citibikenyc.com. Following a spike in home foreclosures across Brooklyn, Borough President Adams hosted a free assistance program at Brooklyn Borough Hall; according to mortgage data from real estate website PropertyShark, the number of new foreclosure auctions in the borough jumped 16 percent year-to-date in 2018 compared to the same period last year. The program, which was held in partnership with HOPE NOW Alliance, Center for NYC Neighbor-hoods, and Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Brooklyn CDC, Inc., took place on Thursday, July 19th and served 122 attendees. It allowed homeowners to meet with mortgage servicers face to face in order to discuss deed-in-lieu, forbearance, loan modification, and short sales, as well as other mortgage solutions. Information was made available on the New York State Mortgage Assistance Program (NYS-MAP), which provides a zero percent interest mortgage loan of up to $40,000 to eligible New York homeowners at risk of foreclosure. Additionally, the program oered free comprehensive counseling from local housing counseling agencies approved by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as well as free legal services on foreclosure intervention and prevention.
