TIME TO THINK ABOUT STEPPING ONTOTHE LADDER – SAYS FOX & SONS

After indications from theGovernor of the Bank ofEngland that interest ratesare likely to increase

around the New Year, local estateagency Fox & Sons in Brighton issuggesting that now might be anopportune time to take out a newmortgage or to find a new deal.

In a recent interview MarkCarney, Governor of the Bank ofEngland, suggested that the Bankof England base rate (BBR), whichis currently at an all time low of0.5 per cent, is likely to increaseat the turn of the year. The rise ininterest rates is expected to“proceed slowly” over the nextfew years, and to peak at around2.5 per cent – half the historicalaverage.

“With interest rates expected torise at the start of next year, wewould say that now is the idealtime to think about taking out amortgage,” says Jack Edwards,Mortgage Services Manager at Fox

& Sons Brighton. “There are a lotof great deals out there at themoment, but it seems that theymight not be around for long, sowe would advise prospectivebuyers who have been thinking ofstepping onto the ladder to take

advantage of the low rates whilethey can.*

My recent tour of the Booth Museum of Natural History beganwith a stuffed raven being placed on the table in front of me,followed by a chough and a magpie. I was lucky enough tojoin a group of

teenagers who had signed upfor a tour as part of thecouncil’s youth engagementprogramme. Our first meetingwas with resident writer MikeJackson who explained thatthe museum of today grewfrom the collection of EdwardThomas Booth who isrecognised as being the firstcollector to display exhibits inrecreations of their naturalhabitats – such as a flock ofgreat black-backed gullsaround a dead sheep.

The museum opened in1874 in the purpose-builtstructure of today in what waspreviously the garden ofBooth’s home, Bleak House.The people of Brightonreceived the museum afterBooth’s death in 1890 oncondition that the displaycases were never to bemodified. Bleak House wasdemolished in around 1940to make way for the Fairwaysand Elm Court blocks of flats.

A narrow staircase, whichwe ascended after beingshown a 140-million-year-oldcrocodile head, is situatedbehind a locked door at therear of the building. This leads up to a vast mezzanine storage level thatis full of hundreds of cabinets which are, in turn, full of tens ofthousands of items. Our group was shown some of the most curiouspieces by the museum’s senior keeper, John Cooper, including a drawerfull of tiger skulls and a cabinet full of bees.

A museum like the Booth would never be created in the modern worldbut, as was asked of us rhetorically on the tour, ‘where else can you seea golden eagle’? ‘Or a dead sheep with no eyes’, was one of theteenagers’ morbid response.www.buildingopinions.com

The tower is at full height –162 metres high. It seemsincredibly to believe that ittook the team just 10 weeks

to complete the construction, and itis really exciting to have reachedthis important milestone so quickly.

It has been a flawless precisionoperation, which has gone without ahitch, and the engineering teamhave done a fantastic job. It hasbeen fascinating to watch theconstruction take place – especiallywhen the tower has been 'levitating'during the jacking operation,attracting crowds on Brightonbeach. My office is based in aPortakabin on the construction siteso we have literally watched thetower go up out of our window.

Hollandia has already begundismantling the square jackingtower, which was used to elevatethe tower to add the cans into thebottom of the tower. As each pieceof the jacking tower comes down,the slim tower beneath isrevealed. The i360 is incrediblyslender – in fact the slimmesttall tower ever built anywhere inthe world with a height: widthaspect ratio of 40:1.

The final bolts were insertedby two apprentices working onthe construction site at a smallceremony attended by theconstruction team, West PierTrust and Brighton & Hove CityCouncil, who held a minute’ssilence to honour the familiesaffected by the Shoreham AirShow tragedy.

So what are the next stages ofconstruction? Our focus is going toshift from the sky to the ground, asMackley has begun building theconcrete frame for the beachbuilding. We will also startrebuilding the arches at the back ofour building, which will eventuallybecome ‘back of house’ areas insideour building for storage and ourstaff facilities.

Meanwhile, the glass podmanufacture is well underway byPoma in France and is due to arrivein Brighton via the Channel Tunnelin October. In the UK, the West Piertoll booths are in the process of being restored and replicated and thepair will arrive on site next spring.

Next year will also see the addition of the tower lighting scheme,which should be stunning and create a real beacon for the city.
