Horsham Town Centre’s annual‘Big Nibble’ Food and DrinkFestival was the biggest to date, and brought in a record
crowd. David Wilson Homes, the developer and a major sponsor of the ‘Big Nibble’ weekend, had a free competition based on a simple question regarding David Wilson Homes’nearby development at Wickhurst Green off Five Oaks Road, BroadbridgeHeath, in West Sussex. “We had an excellent response to our
competition, which brought a number of people to the site”, says Pina Masella, Sales Advisor at Wickhurst Green. Winner of the hamper, Pam Burbidge, says: “I thought it was an
intriguing question about one of the show homes, and as I am temporarilyliving in a rented house in Horsham and am currently looking to buy a house, it was the perfect opportunity to see their show homes.” Pam sold recently in Fetcham but wants to reside in Horsham because of its excellent road and rail links, and easy access to Polesden Lacey, near Dorking, where Pam is a tour guide. Pam actually met one of David Wilson Homes’ sales advisors, John

Tony and Katherine and their two youngchildren, like most families, were on a strictbudget, and thought they wouldn’t be able todo any extensive building work for some time.But when the opportunity arose - through alegacy left by Tony’s mother - they decided thatthey would enlist expert help to extend thehouse to enable them to enjoy more familyspace on the ground floor.
But who to choose? As it happens, the coupleknow Nick and Louise Andrews, whodiscovered DMB Solutions in Latest Homesmagazine and were themselves featured inOctober 2013. On the strength of this personalrecommendation Tony and Katherine calledDMB, and when a member of the DMB design
team came to visit for an initial consultation,the couple explained that what they wantedwas to have an extension which would take inthe view of the garden whilst also providingbetter access to it. DMB came up with theperfect solution, so that the appearance of therear elevation would appear seamless and anaddition would give perfect symmetry to theground floor. DMB suggested a pitched roofto the front which followed the line of themain roof, whilst matching the tiles usingrenovated roof tiles, giving the rightproportional height to the extension.
DMB Solutions offer a fixed price quote forworks which include planning and buildingregulation applications, and in this case Tonyand Katherine were allowed to develop underPermitted Development Rights, which doesn’trequire formal planning consent. Althoughthey did consult with their neighbours over the design.

It was ten years ago that work startedon transforming Embassy Court fromone of the most hated buildings inBrighton and Hove into one of the most
appreciated. In 2004, it would have beenhard to imagine Embassy Court in itsoriginal 1930s glory. Flats were all rentedinitially, and rents were once £500 peryear, which was incredibly highconsidering that a whole house inPeacehaven could be purchased for £300at that time. Successive difficultfreeholders and leaseholders were
responsible for the decline of the building. It wasn’t until 1998 that theleaseholders, led by Hilary Imbimbo, were able to wrench the freeholdaway from the freeholder of the day, Portvale Ltd.
It was years before further legalwrangles were overcome andfunds raised to overhaul thefamously-deteriorating rust-stained exterior. The 2004/5 works,carried out by architects Conran &Partners, cost something in theregion of £5 million. Flats werethen regularly popping up atauction for £50,000. They are noweach worth well over £300,000.
The determination of the leaseholders of Embassy Court must bepraised. A number of problems remain, though, despite attempts to fixthem in 2013. One leaseholder, who loves the building so much that hehas constructed a scale model of it in Lego in his lounge, feels thatseveral basic errors were made in the 2004/5 works. One example isthat balcony doors were changed to open inwards rather thanoutwards. Water now floods in. The number of panes of glass perdoor/window was increased leaving more gaps for water to attack.
Another error relates to some rather attractive mauve terracotta tilesthat line the parapet wall of each balcony around the building.Apparently, it was noticed early on that each expands, which meansmovement beneath balcony windows when a whole row moves. It isthought that Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus School inGermany, was brought in to investigate after the problem was noticedduring the hot summer of 1936. It was rectified at the time by changingcertain window details, but then recreated in 2004/5. It is yet to beremedied for a second time.
The involvement of Gropius – one of the founding fathers ofmodernist architecture – was not unexpected. After escaping Germany,he lived in the distinctive Isokon building in London, also by WellsCoates, the architect of Embassy Court.www.buildingopinions.com [email protected]

Simone: A couple of weeks ago we wroteabout the fabulous Geoff Stonebanksand his amazing garden, Driftwood.Andrew got to visit it over the summer
for the annual MacMillan Garden Trail. I wasvery jealous indeed. Well, last week I finally gotto see the place for myself, as we went back toDriftwood to shoot a series of weekly segmentsfor Latest Homes Live with Geoff, who is ourresident Alan Titchmarsh (minus CharlieDimmock and a chat show). We had so muchfun! Geoff set Andrew and I a series of tasks, allbased around the kind of useful tips that willcome in handy to the viewers at home, when itcomes to prepping your garden for theupcoming colder months. From propagatingferns to turning an old piece of furniture into agarden ornament, we took a stab at several ofthe gardening skills that Geoff is a dab-hand at.
Things got pretty competitive, too, betweenAndrew and I. It was a case of garden shears atdawn! The gardening gloves were mostdefinitely off, literally (I got very muddy nails).Geoff pitted us against each other and againstthe clock, and judged us on our horticulturalabilities. What's wrong with a bit of friendlycompetition between co-hosts, right? The thingis, we learnt so much along the way! And in
between takes, Geoff kept us well sustainedwith coffee and biscuits – always a great host.Must be why so many flock to his garden; it’shad nearly 3,000 visitors in four years! Plus anextra four in the shape of myself, Andrew andour cameramen William and Ant. We had such agreat morning in the sunshine shooting this funnew piece, which will teach our viewers a lottoo.

We landed an exclusiveinterview with the directors of the company,who let us into one of their clients' propertiesto walk us and talk us through the inspiration,the idea and the finished design. ar:ior design isan independent practice with a plethora ofinspirational and practical experience througha diverse range of projects – of which thisproject was just one! What stands them outfrom other companies is the very honedcombination of design experience that Jim andCatherine provide. They have balanced theskills and expertise of a chartered architect, ahistoric building conservation specialist andinterior designers, and have a combinedexperience of over 40 years.
Their range scales from conceptual andfeasibility studies to small scale detailedbespoke joinery and interiors, which was what Igot an exclusive look at. It’s amazing what youcan do to a space by having a designer developthe storage potential in your home. You'll seewhat I mean when you watch the show, butlook out in particular for their ingenious hidingof household appliances such as washingmachines and tumble dryers.
Their other projects also include a variety ofsectors and end users from commercial office,hotel, bar and restaurant fit-outs to residentialextensions, refurbishments and show homestyling. It has to be said that the client base ofthis team reflects their diverse range of projectswith clients ranging from private residentialclients to multinational corporations. It wasgreat to feature Catherine and Jim on LatestHomes Live and we hope to work with themagain soon!
