NLA PRESIDENT GEOFFREYCUTTING MBE OBITUARYNational Landlords Association(NLA) President Geoffrey CuttingMBE passed away on Thursday 13June 2013, aged 88. He is survivedby his wife Barbro, two of his fourchildren and three grandchildren.

Geoffrey Cutting was a modestand pragmatic man, driven by abelief in justice and a desire togive voice to those who mightotherwise go unheard. It was thisdrive which saw him dedicate hisworking life to a number ofprofessional trade associations.

Geoff’s professional life wasdistinguished by 28 successfulyears as director of the Heating andVentilation Contractors Association(now the Building and EngineeringServices Association). His longservice and dedication wasrecognised in 1969 when he wascreated MBE by Her Majesty theQueen for services to the industry.

Too active a man to settlequietly into his well-earnedretirement in 1989, he focused his

Initially as Press Officer, beforeserving as Chairman from 1983 to2001, Geoff brought a wealth ofprofessional experience to theNational Landlords Association(formerly Small LandlordsAssociation) helping to drive itsdevelopment and more importantlyelevating the status of private-renting. Iknow I get to travel a great deal, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that Iam ‘on holiday’. To me, the conjunction ‘on holiday’ should indicate that theholidaying person is relaxing, well away from any stressful situation,

hopefully with a large gin and tonic in the hand and either a sea or pool view.My most recent trip to West Africa involved none of the aforementioned thingsapart from the stressful situation. I arrived at the airport at 2.30 in theafternoon, to be greeted by The Boyfriend with his leg in plaster. He hadapparently been involved in a motorbike accident the day before, where hisfoot had come into high-speed contact with an ill-placed lamp post. I hadthought it rather odd that he’d left me an answerphone message in the middleof the night asking for a selection of very strong pain-killers. His injuries hadnot been helped by the fact that he was wearing flip-flops at the time.

It soon dawned on me that, rather than having the nice time I’d beenplanning in the sun, eating nice food, drinking ice cold beer and running bare-foot along the beach, I would bemainly occupied as nurse anddriver. Nurse is one thing butdriver, with little experience, nolicence and a road full offnutters all driving on the wrongside is entirely another.

To make matters worse, myfirst taxi-driving trip thefollowing morning was to be to ahospital appointment –although appointments, it latertranspired do not actually exist– in the busy capital city. Mynervousness behind the wheelwas further exacerbated by thefact that The Boyfriend’scousin, who is a police woman,came along with us and wassitting behind me in the backseat in full uniform, totallyunaware that I had no drivinglicence. In the end though, shedid turn out to be a bit of agodsend as she got us speedilythrough police road blocks andalso jumped the snakinghospital queues as she had thedoctor’s mobile number. Thehospital was not fit for thefighting fit, let alone thosefighting for their life and I silently thanked God for the NHS.

After a second hospital appointment – by which time I was driving likeLewis Hamilton, by the way – I decided The Boyfriend should be gently coaxedback to the UK, as I was becoming more and more convinced that the doctorshadn’t a clue what they were doing. Two days after arriving back in the UK, TheBoyfriend had major surgery on his foot and the doctors claimed he wouldhave had a great deal of trouble in the future had he not returned to the UKwhen he did.

I am off on holiday soon to Turkey with a friend from The Supermarket,which should be an actual holiday, as long as neither of us break any bones,that is.

Ahigh wall surrounds theentirety of a wholeblock on the Hove

seafront, behind which is amost curious 1930sHollywood-style home.

The high wall, and theentirety of the house in fact,have been constructed withlong grey/purple bricks thatcame individually-wrappedfrom Italy. It was built for thefilm director Stuart Millar bythe prolific cinema architectRobert F. Crombie (whosework included the LidoCinema at the top of DenmarkVillas beside which the sparebricks from the house weresaid to be buried).

The house, now called Barford Court, is locatedon a large plot that was once used to graze sheepin the middle of Prince’s Crescent. Its address is157 Kingsway but it was originally 1 Prince’sCrescent (a far more preferable address in mymind). The building became a nurse’s home afterMillar sold it to Hove Hospital in 1946, andsubsequently opened as a nursing home in 1996after it was purchased by the Royal MasonicBenevolent Institution.

Finding the entrance to Barford Court isactually a little tricky. A locked gate on Kingswaysimply leads into enormous front garden. It isactually entered, by both foot and car, from theeast side, beneath the east wing – the original garageblock which housed four cars. The south wing contains the principal rooms. The inner courtyard would once have looked across what would once have no doubt been the largest garden in Hove. But it has been enclosed though,and now serves as a link into a large new block that was built over the garden.

I could say much about the gorgeous Modernist interior, including thefabulous bronze-railed staircase but my latest visit was about new, hidden,areas. The roof spaces were fairly interesting in terms of just analysingconstruction methods but best of all was the rockery that occupies a generous portion of the tip of the site.

I was shown around by several members of the lovely staff at Barford Courtand was particularly lucky to see the landscaped rockery area that is usuallyoff limits. The shaded oasis includes concealed benches, a large pond andforgotten paths which are longing to be explored. I doubt that many couldidentify photographs as Hove.

Endometriosis is a painful andoften debilitating conditionthat affects around one in ten

women of child-bearing age in theUK. Jenny Lo, a consultantgynaecologist at the MontefioreHospital, explains what it is and howit can be diagnosed and treated.

What isendometriosis?It is a condition where tissue similarto the lining of the womb grows indifferent parts of the body, mostusually in the pelvis, but it has beenfound very rarely in the lungs andeven the brain. This tissue behaveslike the tissue in the womb – itresponds to hormones in the body and if no pregnancy occurs, it breaks downand causes bleeding. However, while the body gets rid of the broken down liningof the womb during a monthly period, the tissue in other parts of the body hasno outlet and as it breaks down, it can cause inflammation and scarring to thearea around it. This often results in severe pain and other symptoms such asbloating, fatigue and fertility problems.

Diagnosing endometriosisOne of the problems with endometriosis is that it is notoriously difficult todiagnose. A survey by the support charity Endometriosis UK revealed that theaverage length of diagnosis was eight years! The main reason for slow diagnosisis that the symptoms endometriosis commonly causes are like symptoms formany other conditions, so these need to be ruled out first. Another reason couldbe that many women don’t like to “make a fuss” and try to put up with the painrather than seeking medical help.

The only way that endometriosis can be conclusively diagnosed is via a procedure known as a laparoscopy. This is an investigation carried out under anaesthetic by a gynaecologist to see whether endometriosis is present.A miniature camera is inserted into the abdomen through a tiny incision throughthe belly button. The camera transmits images to a screen which will show thegynaecologist where the endometriosis is and to what extent is affecting thesurrounding tissue and organs.

Treating endometriosis For many women it is a great relief to be diagnosed with endometriosis as theymay have lived with the pain and other symptoms for many years. The choice of treatment for endometriosis very much depends on a patient’s symptomsand desire to preserve fertility. It can range from taking medication to havingsurgery under anaesthetic including having removal of the womb, ovaries andall the endometriosis tissue.

Summer’s here and the time is right for... opening umbrellas, ordering thesmokeless fuel and checking the central heating’s working. Blimey, butit’s been cold and miserable hasn’t it? Apparently it’s all to do with sea

temperatures and the jet stream, therefore it’s not going to get any warmerthis year as a result. Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but I for one waslooking forward to long hot weekends playing beach volleyball, swimmingfrom Ovingdean beach and impromptu barbecues by now.

It’s also a shame for at least one of our customers for whom we’vedesigned and built a great outdoor space to finish off their home. Whilst thegarden’s ready for long summer evenings the weather isn’t exactlyaccommodating. Ne’er mind, perhaps we can hope for an Indian Summer.

The current weather doesn’t mean we can’t create beautiful spaces in ourgardens. We’ve been involved in a few garden projects this year already and onein particular that’s got us all very excited as we’re using a new material. New tome at least: Balau. It’s one of the best outdoor mediums for creating timberstructures where the surface will blend and fade into a beautifully warm finish.It’s so versatile as is can be used as a decking, box planter lids, seating andtrellising, and loads of other forms. Considerably more expensive than treatedpine admittedly, but more pleasing to the eye, and it can transform a drabdesign into a smart and elegantalternative.

Similar results can beachieved with cedar which weuse for the external cladding onour cocoon garden rooms asfeatured a few months back.Starting at £13k ex VAT, acocoon will transform your garden into a live/workspace and allow that desperately neededseparation from house to place of work. Also,constructed entirely from sustainably sourcedmaterials all of which can be recycled (should youever want to!) it’s a totally planet-friendly building.

And while this weather continues to ruin oursummer, at least with a cocoon you can enjoyyour outdoor space from a comfortable haven;cosy, warm and safe in the knowledge you’vebuilt something that doesn’t have a hugeenvironmental impact like most building works.
