In a previous existence manyyears ago part of my job wasto art direct book covers for

science fiction. I made theimmediate mistake of referringto them as sci-fi but the chiefeditor of the genre Malcolmsoon put me right. “Sci-fi isfilm,” he announced ,“we call itSF, pronounced ess eff.” Iresisted the urge to tell him toess eff off.

After I while I got the knackof it and rather enjoyedworking with the specialistillustrators who dominated themarket. These guys, and theywere mostly male, could createalien landscapes, space-craftand monsters with thrillingrealism and I admired theirartistry. They were alsobrilliant at drawing cities ofthe future.

One day I had taken deliveryof a particularly good city ofthe future and sat at my deskadmiring the artwork. After afew moments I started tonotice some familiar things in the landscape. There was a tower that was quiteclearly modeled on a technical drawing pen, a smaller building that was a bottleof Tipp-ex and a complex of buildings that was the cluster of cylinders thatformed the desk tidy that I used.

Quite clearly the inspiration for the city had been the artist’s desk and theclutter assembled there. Not that it mattered, it was still a great illustration butit did clear up a few questions that I had often pondered.

From that point on I would studiously look at ess eff artwork to spot thesources and I will say that it was a common thing; many of the artists tookhousehold items and used them to draw from.

So why remember this now? Well Mr R talks in his sleep, often waking me toask a question. He is a science fiction game player and loves the art so itclearly is often in his mind. Last week at three in the morning he woke me andwith total clarity asked me this: “So what universe are we in now?” Unsure ofhow to respond, for fear of distressing my sleeping partner, I responded gently,“The same one as when we came to bed.” He smiled and went back to sleep.

Finalists were marked across11 categories including level andquality of service, marketing, out ofoffice provision, key staff profilesand the company’s contribution toinnovation in the industry.

Callaways impressed the judgeswith their brand as East Sussex’smost creative and innovativeagency team. Their quality ofcustomer service andprofessionalism also impressed.

T his year’s Montpelier & Clifton HillAssociation (MCHA) awardsceremony was a most pleasant

occasion – but something ratherimportant was sadly missing.

The MCHA covers one of Brighton’s mostdesirable districts, the Montpelier & CliftonHill Conservation Area between WesternRoad and Seven Dials. Each year, theAssociation is supposed to presents a blueplate to the winner of the awards’residential category.

This year’s residential winners were JonSharpe and Angela Oliver for thecomplete renovation of their gleamingwhite, detached Regency-style houseat 3 Powis Villas. The work includedtotal interior refurbishment along witha huge amount of exterior plasteringusing lime render. It is immediatelyapparent that every detail has beenpainstakingly researched, resulting ina well-deserved win.

The winner of the commercialcategory was HR Developments, alocal firm run by Paul Hazeldine and DaveRoberts, for the restoration of 90 MontpelierVillas. I referred to this building as the‘Scooby Doo House’ in my recent column onthis delightful double-fronted structure.Partly due to its dreadful condition, butmainly due to its distinctive black porch, I always saw this detached building as acreepy house on a hill. With its new paint joband tidy garden, it’s now not scary at all.

The runner-up in the residential categorywas Adam Jones whose house at 21 CliftonHill was completely transformed by the removal of a most conspicuous Tudor-style façade. The result is a joy to behold. The runner-up in the commercialcategory was Ray Charmac for the return of a pair of semi-detached Italianateresidences, 6 and 7 Powis Villas, to their original use as separate houses aftera long spell as part of the Royal Alexandra Hospital estate.

The Chairman of the Regency Society, my friend Mary McKean, presentedcertificates to all of the winners at this year’s ceremony. But missing wasthe blue plate. In fact, a whole series of plates that are yet to be presentedto deserving winners, dated from 2010 to 2020, are no longer in thepossession of the Association. Well, the Association still has that of 2019(not too useful in 2011!).

In a story that would be hard to make up, Roger Amerena, whose latestbankruptcy led to removal from the position of Chairman of the MCHA, iswithholding the plates from the Association for reasons known only to himself.Court proceedings are being prepared – watch this space.Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com

I t is quite unbelievable that it should happen again, but Katy and I areexperiencing problems with our tenants in Hastings. They have not paidtheir rent for two months and when challenged by the letting agent

claimed that the front wall in the living room is damp. I am fully aware ofthis problem, have spent the earlier part of this year organising therectification of it and have had to let the wall dry out before it can be re-plastered. The tenants are au fait with all this, yet are using it as a flimsyexcuse not to pay their rent. I am going over to Hastings today to show thedecorators what they have to do and am not looking forward to having acontretemps with the tenants. They are claiming housing benefit for theproperty and, rather than paying the money directly to the letting agent, thecouncil are paying it directly to the tenant. At least with our old difficulttenant, the council were paying us rent during the whole time our tenantwas systematically deconstructing our flat...

Katy, it has to be said, is blissfully unaware of the current situation as,when I first got wind of it, she was about to go on holiday to Mexico and Ididn’t want the glad tidings to spoil her holiday. It rather reminds me of thetime I went to the Canary Islands on holiday, leaving my parents – boththen very much alive – in my London flat looking after my children. While Iwas away, my dad, while tinkering with some wires unnecessarily, had setthe airing cupboard on fire, destroyed the heating system and almostraised the entire block to theground. However, when I telephonedto make sure all was well, I wasassured that indeed it was andthere was nothing to worry about. Inretrospect, I was rather glad that Ididn’t know and have thereforeemployed the same tactic with Katy.I am hoping that I will have sortedout the situation by the time shegets home.

All this rent evasion by tenantsdoes not bode well formy trying to financethe purchase of ahouse in Spain. I amnot having a great dealof luck with lenders sofar as the first one Icontacted via theinternet snootilyclaimed not to beinterested in lendingany less than£250,000. I only wantto borrow about aquarter of that and feltlike telling them thatyou could buy thewhole of Spain withthat amount at themoment – with a bit of Italy thrown in forgood measure... follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth

D ear Noddy, as much as I admire your positive approach to life – whenwe bought your branded slippers in France it turned out you wereknown by your catchphrase “Oui! Oui!” – I would like to inform you that

I feel the need to point out some aspects of your lifestyle with which Idisagree. These are itemised below.

Point one: You are a taxi driver, but you appear to live in a place no biggerthan a village. (Yes, I know it is known as Toy Town, but the frequency withwhich you bump into people makes me think it really counts more as avillage.) I feel your reliance on vehicles isn’t environmentally friendly. Youalso appear to have a plane, which you sometimes use to simply fly abovethe your own town/village.

Point two: Please learn from yourmistakes. On a number of occasions,those goblins have proved themselves tobe untrustworthy. I call as evidence: theiradvice on where to pick flowers, their giftof the magic powder and their offer to ‘lookafter’ your picnic all turned out badly. Andyet you still believe what they say.

Point three: PC Plod is plainly an idiot,and yet you seem to retain faith in him. It is important that you become morecritical of authority figures or we’re allheading for a totalitarian state.

And while we’re on the subject ofthose around you – Point three – may Ipolitely point out that Martha Monkey,while not as plain evil as the goblins, stillconsistently leads you astray. You needto take her ‘fun’ ideas with just a littletouch more caution, Noddy, or you’ll getyourself into many more scrapes.

On the plus side, may I congratulateyou for not continuing with some new‘friends’ as described in yourChristmas 2000 annual. Theseincluded ‘Rusty’ the lovable, guitar-playing tin clown, a half-tank, half-turtle called ‘Sherman’, and a lounge lizard, named ‘Johnny Crawfish’ who isone of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen, let alone seen in a child’sbook. Well done for realising that these were not worthwhile additions to yourcircle, and would have actually given children nightmares.

P.S Can my kids have your autograph? The Boy was always a big fan, and now Youngest™ is too. You may remember that The Boy met you atMothercare where he jumped the queue to disrupt another child’s photoopportunity. And Youngest™ has become such a fan of your DVDs to such anextent, I would almost call it ‘ad nauseum’. So after you’ve taken note of theimportant points above, keep up the good work.

T he school is givingmy child extra helpwith her reading. I'm

not surprised as sherefuses to be encouragedto read or even play anyreading games with me. Ithought perhaps she hadan instinctive reaction todismiss any games thatare educational. But then Idownloaded a mathsgame with monkeys in it,and now I can never geton my computer!

I asked her why sheliked maths, commentinghow good she was at thegame, expecting her tosay “Monkeys” butinstead she replied,“because I enjoy it” Ofcourse... Of course youhave to enjoy somethingto want to do it and getbetter. I knew that! My daughter hates to be wrong. I don’t know where shegets that from... well, who does like being wrong?

Some of us are just better at being graceful about it. Children generallyaren’t graceful about anything. She detests being told to re-read the word,resents me for correcting her when all I am doing is encouraging her toattempt reading! “That’s it, darling! Just say ch ch like chop chop and theneeeee – cheeeese”

My daughter will scowl at me for telling her what to do: “I know that!” Shewill say in such a way I wish I was the kind of woman who liked cats. I couldhave been a woman with a cat living alone... instead I live with a cutemonster. Sure, a cat would sulk when I returned from weekends away andc*** in the garden but I rarely go away and I haven’t got a garden. And I wouldnever have to teach it to read! It might be easier to teach a cat to read thanmy five year old. I have been beating myself up about her reading, hearingmy own mother’s recent words: “We used to read to you all the time! Youmust read everything – road signs, you name it.”

I do try but my daughter seems uninterested. I wonder if she subtlely feelspressure from me, so rejects it. Perhaps someone else to read with her wouldbe a good idea as I’m wondering if it’s our polarised mother-daughterrelationship that is hindering things. I am Mother. The person who tells herwhat to do all the time. I tell her to tidy her room, eat her greens, pick up hertoys, brush her teeth, pick up her shoes, put on her coat, wash her hands,“Walk! Don’t run eating that apple!” The list is endless. It must be nice tosometimes say “No! I don’t want to read.” I’ll get my friends to read with her,and see if that makes a difference. If not, she can then just grow up to be amath genius never reading the newspapers’ gloom, who lives in a safe happybubble but whose math genius is very exploited by wordy job contracts...
