InsIde the InDuSTRYCollision Claims Continue Slow ReboundThe number of insurer-paid private passenger collision claims in the U.S. reached 5.44 million for 2011, an increase of 1.1 percent versus 2010. That’s according to data from the insurance industry, which says the latest figure is up 1.8 percent since the end of the second quarter in 2010. The result, however, is still 3.3 percent behind the 12-month figure posted midway through 2008, when the number of claims began eight consecutive months of decline. At the same time, the average paid claim increased to $3,029, a jump of 2.8 percent compared to a year ago and 3.7 percent higher than its recent low during the first quarter of 2010.

Technology Reducing Collisions A new report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finds safety improvements added to vehicles between model-years 2000 and 2008 prevented approximately 700,000 crashes during 2008. The study also finds those same advancements reduced the likelihood of being involved in a collision during 100,000 miles of driving from 30 percent in 2000 to 25 percent in 2008, while improving the driver’s chances of avoiding injury from 79 to 82 percent if a crash did occur.

Shop Takes Message to ConsumersOregon-based Leif’s Auto Collision Centers has launched a new website (AskLeif.com) and consumer hotline as part of what it says is a $2 million consumer awareness campaign. The company, which has 11 locations in the Portland area, has gained notoriety in recent years for its television commercials that spoof popular auto insurer ads. Connected and Driverless Vehicles on the WayThe U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) says phase two of its Connected Vehicle Program is taking place this year in Ann Arbor, Mich., with 3,000 vehicles equipped with technologies that allow those vehicles to communicate with one another in order to avoid collisions. The U.S. DOT estimates such technologies could eventually eliminate 81 percent of all unimpaired driver-related crashes.Meanwhile, the first Driverless Car Summit was held in Detroit in June, with a spokesman for NHTSA telling those in attendance that human error is the key factor in 93 percent of crashes. The summit set a goal of making driverless cars a reality by 2022.

Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD), with representatives from its collision parts team, interacted with thousands of collision repair professionals during the recent NORTHEAST Automotive Services Show in Secaucus, N.J. Organized by the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey, the three-day event celebrated its 35th anniversary, and show management reports attendance jumped 20 percent from a year ago.“NORTHEAST is an event tailored specifically to fit the needs and wants of today’s collision industry professionals through products and information geared toward fostering optimal success in the market, whether you are already a seasoned professional or are just starting out,” said Norm Morano, NORTHEAST show manager.Ford provided the show’s attendees with much-sought-after technical repair information, including sections of the Ford Focus and Fiesta workshop manuals and its joint-OEM steel repairability matrix. Ford also promoted OEM1Stop.com—a one-stop website to locate technical repair information available from almost all OEMs—and debuted its new consumer brochure, which repair shops can distribute to their customers to educate them on the entire collision repair process (see related story on page 9). “The NORTHEAST show has always been a great venue for Ford to support and provide important information about its genuine collision parts to collision repairers on the East Coast,” said George Gilbert, FCSD collision merchandising manager.Looking ahead, plans are already underway for next year’s NORTHEAST show, which is scheduled for March 8 – 10, 2013, in Secaucus. Ford Motor Company has released several collision repair-related technical service Bulletins in recent months, each covering important information repairers need to fix their customers’ vehicles right the first time. here’s the rundown:

Dealers can get complete details on each of these TSBs at FMCDealer.com, while independent repairers should contact their local Ford or Lincoln wholesaling dealer for more information.

InsIde the InDuSTRY

Earlier this year, Nevada became the first state to issue a license for self-driving vehicles to accommodate a test being conducted by Google; since then five more states have begun considering issuing such licenses.

aluminum use expected to GrowTwo major producers of aluminum have announced they’re adding capacity as automakers have begun making greater use of the material, including for parts such as hoods, fenders, doors and liftgates. Alcoa is predicting consumption of aluminum sheet will triple by 2015, while a recent report from Ducker Worldwide found by that same year the average vehicle built in North America will have 400 pounds of aluminum, an increase of 17 percent from this year.

Insurers’ Profit up in Q1The combined first-quarter net income of U.S. property/casualty insurers jumped to $10.1 billion, an increase of 29.5 percent from a year ago. That’s according to the Insurance Services Office (ISO) and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, which report the insurers’ combined ratio (the measure of underwriting losses and expenses) improved to 99 percent in the quarter, after posting 103.3 percent during the same three months in 2011. ISO says that’s the best first-quarter combined ratio since 2007, with a decline in catastrophe losses given the bulk of the credit.

CIC names new ChairThe Collision Industry Conference (CIClink.com) has named State Farm’s George Avery as its new chair for 2013 – 2014. The longtime CIC participant will take over for Caliber Collision Centers’ Mike Quinn, who has held the position since 2011. Avery will become CIC’s 16th chair since its inception in 1984, and third from an auto insurer. This year’s final conference is scheduled for Oct. 31 & Nov. 1 in Las Vegas.

average Vehicle age Still IncreasingThe average age of vehicles on the road today in the U.S. has climbed to 11.0 years, up from 10.8 a year ago. That’s according to a report from Experian Automotive, which finds that 21.5 percent of all light-duty vehicles are over 15 years old, and that the number of those seven years old and up has increased by 17.3 million in the last three years. Experian says vehicles seven years old and older now account for just over 175 million of the approximately 245 million vehicles on the road in the U.S.

Ford Motor Company has released guidelines for handling electric and hybrid-electric vehicles involved in a collision, just as the first 2012 Ford Focus electric vehicles are starting to arrive in select dealer showrooms.

The two documents—one for vehicle owners and the general public, and the other for towing and recovery operators and storage facilities—deal with the special concerns that come with the high-voltage lithium-ion batteries such vehicles use, including the potential for delayed fires, electric shocks and the release of toxic gases if the batteries are damaged in a collision.

In addition to the Focus Electric, which is expected to be available in 19 markets by the end of the year, the new 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid—a small multi-activity vehicle—and the C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid are expected to join the lineup in the second half of this year, while the 2013 Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are expected soon thereafter.

With its enhanced roster, Ford intends to triple its electrified vehicle production capacity by next year. Along with the new guidelines, which are detailed below, the 2012 Focus Electric Vehicle Emergency Response Guide is available online at www.motorcraftservice.com.

Class Action Denied in Creation of CAPA SuitA U.S. District Court judge in California has once again denied a class-certification request in the case against several insurers over the creation and funding of the Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA), after granting the defendants’ motion to exclude the recent testimony of the plaintiffs’ expert witness. Allen Wood, formerly an investigator with the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and executive director of the Collision Repair Association of California, testified in May that six non-OEM and four salvage part categories would have at least a 25 percent probability of producing an inferior repair compared to OEM parts. The insurers asked that the testimony be stricken, however, arguing that it wasn’t sufficiently scientific or statistically based, and the judge agreed. The plaintiffs charge State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, Liberty Mutual and CAPA with unfair competition and restraint of trade, claiming CAPA was created as a “sham organization” to further the use of non-OEM parts. The plaintiffs are now expected to request that the case continue on an individual basis.

Judge Halts Insurer use of Salvage PartsLiberty Mutual Insurance and one of its direct-repair facilities have been ordered to stop using salvage parts on vehicles less than three years old in West Virginia. The temporary injunction was granted by a circuit court judge as part of a lawsuit brought by the state’s attorney general charging the insurer and shop have violated state law by using the parts without the consent of vehicle owners. As part of the order, Liberty Mutual will also turn over to the state the names of all consumers who have had such repairs done over the last three years.

Trial Date Set in North State v. ProgressiveTrial has been scheduled for next January in the $15 million lawsuit brought by New York shop owner Greg Coccaro against Progressive Insurance. Coccaro, owner of North State Custom, brought the tortious interference and defamation of character suit in 2007 after being sued by the insurer on fraud charges in 2005. Coccaro eventually won that case late last year.

Price Fixing updatesTRW Deutschland and Autoliv have both agreed to plead guilty for their involvement in a conspiracy to fix prices of seatbelts, airbags and steering wheels installed on vehicles sold in the U.S. The companies also agreed to pay fines of $5.1 million and $14.5 million respectively. So far, seven companies and 10 individuals have been charged in the U.S. Justice Department’s ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the former chairman of Depo Auto Parts Industrial, Shiu-Min Hsu, has agreed to plead guilty to a one-count felony charge in the Justice Department’s ongoing aftermarket lighting price-fixing case. That makes four companies and five individuals charged in that investigation to date.

Ford Motor Company has released a brand-new, full-color brochure intended to educate consumers about the ins and outs of the sometimes intimidating collision repair process—informing them about the roles of insurers and body shops, as well as the details every vehicle owner should know in the event of an accident.

The brochure, formatted in an easy-to-read Q&A format, provides facts about the entire collision repair process, from choosing and working with the best insurance company and body shop, to the benefits of repairing a vehicle with Genuine Ford Original Equipment collision replacement parts.

“The brochure was created to help facilitate awareness with the consumers about their options and choices during the repair process. Dealing with the after-effects of a crash can be overwhelming, and this brochure can help define the process and answer common questions,” said Paul Massie, powertrain & collision product marketing manager.

The brochure is available to dealers at FMCDealer.com (item# CPB2012), free of charge, in wrapped quantities of 25 with no ordering limit. For interested independent collision repair shops, please contact your local Ford or Lincoln collision parts wholesale dealer or the Ford Collision Parts Hotline at [email protected] for more information.
