As Queenslanders turned to heaters and blankets to warm up, RACQ has warned about the importance of electrical appliance safety checks, with the insurer recording almost 1,000 claims for fire damage to homes in the past three years. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said insurance claims revealed home fires were most commonly caused by mechanical or electrical faults, with 280 claims for home fires caused by appliance issues. "With temperatures dropping rapidly across the State, there'll be plenty of old heaters and electric blankets pulled out of the cupboard," Ms Ross said. "It's really important every homeowner completes a thorough check of the appliance to avoid running the risk of a home fire this winter." Ms Ross said it wasn't just the heating appliances that could cause damage, with the statistics showing cooking incidents rated as the second most common cause of a home fire claim. "Winter can be a very common time for your cooktop or oven to have issues," she said. "We've received more than 185 claims for fire damage from cooking or barbecuing in the last three years, and when many of us are cooking with oil or over gas, a fire can spark quickly and cause widespread damage to your home." Ms Ross said there were simple rules Queenslanders should follow to stay safe this winter: • Never leave an oven, BBQ or cooktop unattended • Don't leave the house with your electric blanket or heater still running • Regularly clean your dryer filter • Make sure you've had an electrician check all wiring and cords in your home

MBRC’S LATEST DECISION BRINGS NEWS CREW TO SPEAK WITH LOCALS

Yvonne, we have been advised that there has been an interesting proposition put forward by the Moreton Bay Regional Council re the North Lakes Golf CourseThat's correct Rebecca, the Council does not have a DA (development application) before them yet to do with the area of land known as the North Lakes Golf Course. MBRC recently met with the developers The Vi l lage Retirement Group (TVRG) and Save the North Lakes resident group to get a better understanding about the issue. The outcome from these discussions was that MBRC would pay for independent legal advice to determine if it was legal for the developer to lodge an application for a retirement village on this golf course land. Both sides have sought their own legal assistance and both believe they are right. Once the advice comes back to MBRC, both TVRG and SNLGC are to abide with that decision. Both groups have agreed to this. Remembering this decision is only that it would be legal or not legal to lodge a development application, not a blanket approval.

Yvonne we understand the issue from the SNLGC side as the Development Control Plan (DCP) shows a retirement village as a prohibited use. How could TVRG lodge an application for a prohibited use ?Bec, this is the heart of the very issue that the independent body is to determine and to be

honest, both SNLGC and TVRG need to know where they stand. Residents need to know as this has been ongoing since 2018. The Golf Course was created before land o w n e r s a r r i v e d , a n d t h e developer's advertising talks about “overlooking the Golf Course” or “Golf Course views”. It's important for everyone to know that what they thought they bought was protected under the DCP. The independent legal body will be the one to assess any changes in legislation etc that may have been passed throughout Queensland may have altered determinants in the DCP.

Yvonne, do you think this suggestion of an independent legal body to determine this is a good idea?Yes Rebecca I do. I think MBRC are doing the right thing for all parties concerned. This new Council is certainly on the front foot and the Community as a whole needs concrete clarification on this very important issue.

We speak to Previous Councillor for North Lakes/Pine Rivers Shire Council whose signature is on the Sector Plans and PrecinctPlans of the North Lakes Development Control Plan, Yvonne Barlow.

USC PROVIDES FREETOOLKIT FOR JOBSEEKERSWith COVID-19 lockdowns severely disrupting the Australian job market, the USC Business School has stepped forward to provide free assistance to those applying for jobs. The School has developed an online Employability Toolkit to help upskill people who are currently out of work, considering changing careers, interested in professional development or are about to enter the job market for the first time.

Dean and Head of the USC Business School Professor Lorelle Frazer said the toolkit included four modules that focussed on building and maintaining a personal brand, creating a personal website, using social media for job hunting, and developing job application materials and skills.

“With so many jobs affected by COVID-19, we wanted to help people bounce back into the workforce as quickly as possible,” Professor Frazer said.

“This free, comprehensive community resource from the USC Business School will help people stand out when they are applying for jobs.

“It includes ideas about developing and managing an online presence, preparing for job interviews, and

putting your best foot forward when applying for a new job or responding to the ongoing challenges in the business environment.“The modules have been developed by industry professionals, feature plenty of interesting video interviews, and give participants the opportunity to take a considered look at their professional profile.

“People may complete one or more of the online modules, depending on their interests, with those who complete all four to receive a certificate of completion.”

The toolkit is now online at www.usc.edu.au/usc-employability-toolkit

HISTORIC MOMENT AS GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS READY TO REOPEN Craving a cultural experience? You can once again satisfy the urge at one of Moreton Bay Region Galleries and Museums from June 13 following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.Caboolture Regional Art Gallery and Redcliffe Museum will reopen from next Saturday, while Bribie Island Seaside Museum and Pine Rivers Heritage Museum will open just in time for school holidays on June 27.Mayor Peter Flannery said our galleries and museums were the heartbeat of Moreton Bay for many locals and visitors from outside the region.“What a joy it is after months of being couped up with COVID-19 restrictions to finally be able to get out of the house and experience some art, history and culture,” Mayor Flannery said.“I'm personally excited to be able take my wife and kids down to Redcliffe Museum to see the new Artistic Endeavour exhibition, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Endeavour's voyage along the east coast of Australia through botanical art.“Council has made significant investment over the years to make our galleries and museums some of the best in South-East Queensland and we are continuing to upgrade them all. “But it's our passionate team who are always coming up with new and innovative ideas to engage the broader public that make it so worthwhile, so schedule your next visit from next Saturday June 13.“Things won't be completely back to normal for a little while, so that means we'll have to make slight changes to how the galleries and museums operate until further restrictions ease.“In line with Stage 2 of the Queensland Government's Roadmap to Easing Restrictions we will be able to have 20 people at one time for 30-minute sessions.

“We won't be doing bookings unless it is an organised event and you may be required to wait until the next 30-minute session begins.“As usual, social distancing will remain in place at all times until the Federal and State Government's direct us otherwise.“ Our wonderful staff will continue to deliver online programs for those who can't get enough of our Moreton Bay Region galleries and museums.”And to celebrate the reopening, Moreton Bay Region Galleries and Museums has also launched its new Instagram account to keep you all up to date with the latest exhibitions and events.“I know the galleries and museums team are super excited to fill it up so you can stay connected and won't miss out on anything,” Cr Flannery said.“You'll be able to discover art, stories and people, as well as behind-the-scenes sneak peeks of exhibitions, event highlights and the latest news.“This is just another way we're giving greater access to our residents and visitors to stay engaged with our cultural offerings, so please check it out and start following today.”For more information about the reopening of these f a c i l i t i e s , p l e a s e v i s i t : https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/Galleries-Museums/News/Newsfeed/Coronavirus

about it and he threw the bottle outside on the patio area. Still my husband said nothing so I took the kids to my parent's house and told them everything because I really needed to talk. Dad and my brother are furious about it all and have asked me to move back home. They say if I need help to just ask. My husband came over and promised to do something about his brother. It's been 2 weeks and nothing has been said and his brother has not apologised. In fact he acts smug like I have just lost my husband to him or something. I don't want to be a single mother and apart from his brother everything is really good. What do you feel about this? Anything you can offer would be of help to me and I need to know what you would do.

Lindsay/Deception Bay

Hi Lindsay,

Your brother in law is an interloper in your marriage, is disrespectful to you and your home and finances and your husband is allowing him to be. These seem to be the facts of the matter. This situation is intolerable and I suggest that you force an immediate change. I feel that you need to take back control of your home and demand respect. You asked what I would do so I can be more direct. I would tell my husband that the situation with his brother is the deciding factor of whether or not I stay in the marriage. As his wife and children, you should be his priority and clearly you are not.

I firstly suggest marriage counselling to try to unpack the issues, create behavioural

change and an agreement about what is expected in the future. If he will not engage with the counselling process, I would let my actions speak louder than my voice. I would tell him that his brother is not welcome in our home and if he shows up I will ask him to leave. If he refuses to leave, I would either call my father and brother to come over and ask him to leave or take the children to my parents and stay there until he agrees to remove his bother from our home. I would advise him that I will no longer tolerate him in our house and around our children but that I would not stop him seeing his brother at a neutral venue when he chooses.

There are times in life when we have to fight for respect and we have a right to expect our spouse to be supportive of respectful treatment of us and our children. I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you that I have a feeling that how you manage this situation may impact on your quality of life and self esteem going forward so to my mind doing nothing is not an option. Consider giving him a copy of this article to mentally digest. I feel that if your husband loves you and wants to save his marriage, he will deal with the issues around his brother.

Hi Leonie,

I just love this forum and it's great to get such great advice and I am hoping to take advantage of this wonderful service that The Messenger offers. I am miserable in my marriage but not because of my husband but because of my brother in law. I need to fill in some blanks firstly…we are all in our late twenties and early thirties. My brother in law is the eldest of all of us. My husband is close to this guy and he spends way too much time at our place which is one issue but the biggest issue is his constant interference in our lives and disrespect of me. We have 2 children, a 2 year old boy and a 4 1/2 year old girl. They love their uncle but he constantly swears around them and challenges everything I do and say. If I say they can't have something he tells me not to be silly and just gives it them. I then take it off them and a great big blow up happens when they start screaming. He has told my daughter that I am fat and lazy (I am neither) and said that the house is a mess. What house isn't a mess with two little kids and a mooching brother in law always there? I have so many fights with my husband over his brother that I've lost count. The other big thing is that we are a one income family and we are feeding this guy 3 or 4 nights a week. He drinks the soft drink, cordial for the kids and my husband always pays for the beer. About 3 weeks ago his brother grabbed the milk (3 litre bottle) out of the fridge and drank straight from the bottle and I could see the back wash slop back into the bottle. I went off my head

‘till next week. Leonie

YOUR BIGGEST FINANCIAL DECISION - DON’T JUST TRUST IT TO ANYONE!

From my very first meeting with Phill I knew I was in expert hands. His experience and knowledge of the market was invaluable and his professional, polite, easy manner was exemplary. He explained the current market in detail to myself in a realistic and informed manner so I knew what to expect from the sale. He was able to recommend local, reliable and very reasonably priced contractors to assist me in getting the house ready for sale as well as giving me suggestions on how I might improve the presentation of the house prior to putting it on the market without exceeding my budget. During the sale campaign, Phill worked extra hard and nothing I asked was too much trouble, he was very reliable in keeping me up to date with where things were at no matter the day or time. He is very knowledgeable and insightful, proactive, communicates frequently, builds relationships based on trust, has superb PR skills and works very quickly to get things done to a very high level of quality. Phill was very professional and worked really hard to get me the best possible price with the current changing market and in what turned out to be an extremely short time which was ideal for myself. Phill’s communication and attention to detail were excellent. His ability to break the process down and walk me through it all gave me great peace of mind without all the pressure.Having not sold a home before I was so pleased with how easy and uncomplicated Phill made the transaction of selling my home then engaged his services in helping me purchase my new home. I know he will go a long way as he continues to help people achieve their dreams.
