Charlton Athletic 3 Milton Keynes Dons 0Charlton Athletic moved into the Third Round of the FAWomen's Cup with a 3-0 home win over Milton KeynesDons. Three long distance second half strikes, two fromCharley Clifford and one from Kit Graham saw Charlton toa margin of victory which had looked unlikely after a tightlycontested first period, in which the South EastCombination League visitors had frustrated the hosts andhad fashioned some good attacks of their own. Neither team had played in over a month and theopening exchanges were a reflection of the weather-enforced inactivity with posession turning over frequentlyand defences dominating. Sam Pittuck had the first efforton goal with her header from Leigh Houlihan's cross beingwell held by Dons keeper Emma Kirby. On 13 minutes, Charly Wright had a free kick blocked by the Charlton defensive walland Heather McDonnell hit a low shot from the rebound which Megen Lynch turned awayfor a corner. Kate Hardaker went very close for the home team with a deflected shot just overthe bar on 16 minutes but MK were getting a good share of the ball and competing well allover the pitch. Pittuck nearly found a way through on 31 and 45 minutes but was foiled firstlyby Clare Hollingsworth's tackle then by a brave save from Kirby. It seemed that fresh ideas and an increase in the pace of attacking moves might beneeded to break down the visitors' resistance. In fact, it was a sweetly hit 30-yard shot outof nothing from Clifford which broke the deadlock on 48 minutes. The same player doubledthe lead five minutes later with a well placed 20-yard free kick from the middle of the goalwhich Kirby could only help into the net. Lil Stanton had a good effort turned away by Lynch as Dons rallied but Charltoncontinued their long range shooting policy, Clifford going close to her hat-trick on 64minutes, then Pittuck turning and firing inches wide from 25 yards. In between Graham hada header well saved by Kirby from a free kick and Hollingsworth made another fine last ditchinterception to deny Clare Rogers a sight of goal. A flurry of substitutions did little to alter the flow of the match as Charlton grew influency and confidence, forcing their opponents to defend for much of the final half hour.Graham capped a very busy display with a fine effort in the final minute, working her wayinto a shooting position 25 yards from goal, then hitting the ball over Kirby and in off theunderside of the bar for a three-goal margin of victory. Charlton Athletic will contest a Third Round home tie with either Sheffield FC, leadersof the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League, or Liverpool Feds of theNorthern Combination who will have a third try at staging their match next Sunday. MiltonKeynes Dons, third in the South East Combination table, showed why they are having agood season with a well organised and spirited display.Charlton Athletic: Megen Lynch, Stef Simmons, Rosie Paye, Leigh Houlihan, EmmaHarrison, Charley Clifford, Sam Pittuck, Katie Hardaker, Kit Graham, Katie Flack, ClareRogers. England 1 (Aluko 10) Norway 1 (Bjaneso 87)Melissa Bjaneso's 87th minute header denied England victory in Mark Sampson's first game incharge. The 31-year-old replaced Hope Powell in December and Eniola Aluko's tenth minute goalwas almost enough to defeat Euro 2013 runners-up Norway in La Manga. But Bjaneso's late intervention denied Sampson that privilege although he can still besatisfied with the manner of his team's performance, as they certainly did enough to win the game. The new Head Coach gave a senior team debut to left back Demi Stokes and he handedthe captain's armband to Steph Houghton, though he won't make a decision on his permanentskipper until after the Cyprus Cup in March. In all, he made four changes from England's last game, a 4-0 World Cup qualifying win inTurkey in October. Lianne Sanderson made her first appearance since March 2010, replacingEllen White up front, Houghton came in for Gemma Bonner, Stokes for Sophie Bradley andKaren Carney for Jill Scott. The Three Lions started the better of the two sides, with Nobbs and Carney firing shotsoff target early on and it took just ten minutes for Aluko to score the first goal of Sampson's reign. The Chelsea attacker drove into the box after collecting Carney's pass, cut back onto herright foot and bent a shot towards the far corner, and Norway's 17-year-old debutant goalkeeperCecile Fiskarstrand was beaten after the ball deflected off her captain Trine Ronning and loopedinto the net. The game became a bit disjointed after the opener, but Karen Bardsley stayed alert andpulled off a top class reaction save to deny Elise Thorsnes from close range midway through thefirst half. Sampson's new side brushed off that scare as Fara Williams cracked a shot inches wideof the post and Nobbs forced Fiskarstrand to parry away a fierce 25-yard drive. Ronning almost had the misfortune of deflecting another shot into her own net in anattempt to clear Nobbs's right wing cross just before the break, but the ball crept just wide of thefar post. Norway predictably started the second half on the front foot with Thorsnes shootingnarrowly wide on 53 minutes and Kristine Minde forcing Bardsley to turn an angled drive over thebar shortly after. Sanderson then came close to doubling England's lead on the hour mark afterbeing found by Stokes' deep, left wing cross but her header was well saved by Fiskarstrand. The European finalists came again though, and after Nobbs' attempted through ball tosubstitute White was cut out, Norway started a counter attack, leading to Ada StolmsoHegerberg calling Bardsley into action for the third time. Manchester City's new signing stoodfirm and repelled the effort at her near post. However they did manage to find a late equaliser through substitute Bjaneso, who headedhome a right sided corner from ten yards out. England could still have won the game in the dying embers, as Houghton shot wide andWhite struck an overhead kick just over the bar. It wasn't to be however and Sampson opens his international account with a credible drawagainst top quality opposition.England: Karen Bardsley, Alex Scott, Demi Stokes (sub Gemma Bonner 61mins), FaraWilliams, Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze, Eniola Aluko (sub Jill Scott 68mins), Jordan Nobbs (subLaura Bassett 76mins), Lianne Sanderson (sub Ellen White 68mins), Karen Carney, ToniDuggan (sub Gemma Davison 79mins). New England coach Mark Sampson admitted he was happy with the week in Spain withhis new squad, whom he took charge of for the first time since his appointment last month.

England drew 1-1 with Norway in Sampson’s first match at the helm and hesaid: “In terms of the football, [I am] really pleased. We asked the girls to play a slightlydifferent way and they really embraced the concepts and gave it a right good go.

“In terms of the performance, I’m delighted there are so many positives we cantake into the Cyprus Cup.”

Steph Houghton was named captain for Mark Sampson’s first game and shewas satisfied with the team's display. She said: “Considering it was our first game of theseason under new management, I think we did well.

“The girls are disappointed to concede so late but overall in our performance Ithink we did enough to win the game. “To concede a goal in the last five minutes after being in control for most of thegame is hard to take. But it’s something we can learn from.”

The 25-year-old revealed to TheFA.com that her team mates have embracedSampson’s ideas during his first week in situ and has already identified areas where shebelieves they can improve.

Houghton added: “We want to play a pressing game and press from the front. All the girls put that into place and we managed to do that for 90 minutes.

“Everyone’s worked hard on the training ground, everyone has taken his ideason board and now it’s all about progressing and learning as we go.”

With Sampson not set to name his permanent captain until after the CyprusCup in March, he has identified a few candidates for the role, of which Houghton is one,and the Manchester City player spoke with great pride at donning the Three Lionsarmband for the first time.

She explained: “I was really surprised, but really honoured and humbled to leadthe team out.

“It’s something that you dream of as a kid and it has come true today, but themost important thing was that the team played well.”

The Cyprus Cup Groups have been confirmed for this year’s friendly invitationtournament which takes place from 5th-12th March. Twelve international teams will takepart in the seventh competition in Cyprus.

England won the tournament last year and have been placed in Group A to faceItaly, Finland and last year’s losing finalists Canada. In Group B, Australia will meetHolland, France and Scotland while in Group C, South Korea face New ZealandSwitzerland and the Republic of IrelandGroup A: England, Italy, Finland, CanadaGroup B: Australia, Holland, France, ScotlandGroup C: South Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland, Republic of Ireland

Oxford United are pleased to announce the signings of midfielder Kayleigh Hines and goalkeeperDemi Lambourne ahead of the start of their debut campaign in the FA Women’s Super League2 in March. Hines joins the club on a one-year deal with the option of a further year’s extension, having previously played in the Arsenal Academy and for Reading, as well as a spell at Americanside Millburn Magic. Kayleigh was delighted to be at the club: “I had the opportunity to come to Oxford, whichwas something that I always wanted to do. I just came along to start the new season, which Iintended to do anyway and it was just a bonus that they got approved for the WSL. It’s a verygood opportunity and something I’m looking forward to.” Previously with Reading, Demi Lambourne has progressed through the Oxford youthsystem and has represented England at Under-19 level. She said: “We started off as quite a smallclub and hadn’t been running that long, but I think it’s grown and become a really good set-up.That’s purely why I moved to Oxford, as the set up was really good.

“It’s going to be a step up but I think we can only grow from where we are now. It’s veryprofessional, the training sessions are very hard but obviously we’re going to be ready for theseason when it starts.” With the players returning for pre-season training last week manager Richard Blackmoresaid he was pleased to see the squad taking shape. “Demi’s a goalkeeper who’s come up through the youth system and gone into theAcademy and she’s earned her first senior contract, which is always really good,” he said. “She’sa very, very good goalkeeper and she’ll be competing for a first team place. “Kayleigh’s been a long-term target for us. She’s a defensive midfielder, very hard-working, technically very good and again she’ll be a big asset for us through the season whenwe do make that step up to the WSL2.” Oxford are also delighted to announce that club captain Sahara Osborne-Ricketts hassigned a new deal which will keep her at the club for the next year, with the option of a furtherone-year extension. The 22-year-old former Reading, Arsenal and Watford centre-back captained United tothe South West Combination title last season and said she is looking forward to continuing theclub's success in the FA Women's Super League. “I'm pleased to have signed another deal with Oxford,” she said. “Obviously, it's a greatstep for me as we're going to be in the Super League next year and I just can't wait to get startedand playing now. The steps the club took to get us into the Super League have been massive,it's very professional and all the hard work behind the scenes is just incredible. I'm just happy tobe part of a club like this.” Manager Richard Blackmore was pleased to see Sahara commit her future to the club.He said: “She was last year's captain and she has good experience in the national Women'sPremier League as well, so she's an influential player for us.

“She's a good leader, she's a very good communicator, she does lead by example andshe works exceptionally hard on the pitch. She just wants to win and she is a winner.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Natalie Hall emerged as her side’s heroine as thereached the semi finals of the Birmingham County Cup. The 25-year-old saved two penalties and made a string of great saves during normal timeas Wolves defeated Solihull Ladies 3-1 on a shootout after the sides had finished level at 1-1 afterextra time. Swindon Town have raced clear at the top of the SouthWest Combination in recent weeks and underlined theirgood form by beating second placed Forest GreenRovers 4-0 on Sunday, their fifth league win in a row. We talked to Swindon striker Ellie Maynard andshe revealed the surge of confidence that a winning runbrings and the expectations at the club this season:That was a great result in a top of the table clash, how well did the team play to achieve this?It was a top performance by everyone, I don't think themanagement could have asked for more. Kim, Jase andRobbo worked us hard in the weeks leading up it and thegirls took this attitude into the game and we reallydeserved the result we got.Was it ample revenge for the two defeats you suffered to Forest Green earlier in theseason, when they scored three times on each occasion?I think so, obviously we all would have liked it to be more just to really show it to them andwe had enough chances to make it more, but we matched what they did to us and addedone more!Since those two games with Forest Green, you have won five matches on the trot.Do you think there has been any particular reason for your good form?I feel we weren't settled with a team so the management were still trying things out. Sincethen though, we've signed a few new players and all found our form and the more we playthe better we perform. We all believe we can win this league now so we want to show howgood we really are.You are now eight points clear although the teams below have games in hand. Areyou confident you can keep the run going?Yes, if we all continue performing how we have recently, of course we can! If the teamsbelow won their next games we would be one point clear, so this gives us the motivationto increase that gap and go on to win it.Who do you see as your biggest rivals in the title race?Right now I would say Plymouth, but we are yet to play Chichester who are doing alrightthemselves.Swindon have always been one of the better sides in the Combination, what hasbeen the difference this time around?Being taken over by the community office made a huge difference. The encouragementand support we get now is incredible and it brings us all closer as a team which in turnimproves our overall performance. This week you travel to play Southampton Saints, are you expecting a tough gamedown there? All the games in our league could go either way but with how we've been playing lately, Ithink we will get a comfortable win. With due respect to Saints there is a big difference inour league positions. If you can keep going and land the title, what do you think it would mean to the club?Winning the title is huge this season. The community have big expectations of us and weare more than capable of fulfilling them. It would mean a lot to give something back tothem, seeing as they have given a lot to us this season.

Football in Oxfordshire has been severely hit by therecent wet weather, with almost all local pitchesproving unplayable, but the rain has done nothing tostop Futsal play – the growing, new craze in indoorfootball. Now girls’ youth teams from around thecounty have competed for a place in the regionalfinals.

For those not already in the know: Futsal is theofficially recognised form of five-a-side football thatis recognised by UEFA and FIFA. Similar in nature tothe game played in gyms for many years, Futsaldiffers primarily only in its use of a smaller, heavierball.

The game is catching on rapidly in the UK,and fifteen girls’ teams competed at the local heatsfor the FA National Youth Futsal Festival, played atthe new Oxford City Futsal Arena. The tournamentconsisted of competitive leagues at Under-12 andUnder-14 levels, with several of the teams playingfutsal for the first time. This is a massiveimprovement from last year when we ran it for thefirst time, with only one age group with five teamsentering.

The festival generated an excitingatmosphere, enjoyed by players and spectatorsalike; it was a truly family event. The teams allcompeted with great energy and spirit, withKidlington Youth FC winning at Under-14 level andCrowmarsh Youth FC narrowly proving victoriousamongst the Under-12s in an extremely close andexciting league. Both winners will play in the SouthEast Regional Festival against other County FAwinners, to be played at Surrey Sports Park.

Steve Forse, coach of the narrowly defeatedKidlington Under-12s spoke for everyone when hethanked Oxfordshire Football Association fororganising such a successful event. “The girls allreally enjoyed it and were chomping at the bit to playin every match they could. Considering many ofthem hadn't played before, the girls all got to gripswith the rules pretty quickly and put in a tremendouseffort,” he added.

Sarah Wood, Football Development Officer atthe Oxfordshire FA, said: “it’s great to see more girlsteams get involved in Futsal. Many of the players hadnever played before but it’s amazing how quicklythey learn the rules and can adapt to an indoorsetting.”(Source: www.oxfordshirefa.com)

A crisp sunny Sunday afternoon saw Holmes Park play host to the Leicestershire & RutlandFA Plate Final between Oadby & Wigston Dynamo and Heather St Johns. With both teams positioned in the top half of the East Midlands League Division OneSouth, Oadby & Wigston knew it would be a difficult game but were up for the challenge. The game started briskly with both teams pushing forward and defending well, withlittle clear cut chances for either side. Towards the end of the first half Oadby & Wigstonbegan to gain the upper hand and it was only the skill of Heather’s goalkeeper that stoppedthem from taking the lead. Eventually a rebound from a one-on-one with the keeper saw KiriHerbert coolly slot the ball home to make it 1-0, and this is how it stood for the remaining tenminutes of the half. With neither team making any changes during the break, the second half sawHeather come out fighting for the equaliser but Oadby’s defence stood strong and controlledto deny Heather any clear cut chance. Both teams knew the second goal would be decisive. With set pieces and cornerslooking the most likely way Heather would score, Oadby & Wigston regained the upper handin midfield and down the wings. Midway through the half, a perfect through ball and timely run down the left wing sawVictoria Bishop cut in to lob the keeper with a skilful shot, ending in the net to double Oadby& Wigston's lead. Dynamo’s continued pressure resulted in a perfectly executed header by JessKeeling from a corner, and a second goal from Victoria Bishop killed off any chance of acomeback by Heather at 4-0. Although Oadby & Wigston eventually won comprehensively, the score didn’t reflectthe attitude, skill and strength of Heather St Johns with both teams looking forward tomeeting in the league.

Steels power into last eightAn unfit pitch at Niagara meant the Sheffield Rangers vs Steel City Wanderers tie in theSheffield & Hallamshire Cup was switched to the Steels’ home ground at Davy’s with Steels, asexpected, enjoying progress to the quarter finals, though County League Rangers can take greatcredit for restricting the margin to just 7-0 against the East Midlands League Premier Division highfliers. Cheryl Mawhood, who has been banging goals in for fun this season, bagged her sixth hattrick or better this season with the other Steels goals coming from Maria Burns, Leanne Duke, ZoeBeresford and Paris Wagstaff. The Football League Trust’s FFD programme is a pivotal part of this, distributing £547,000across the country, with an ambitious target to reach 14,760 new female players throughNorthampton Town FC and 53 of its fellow Football League clubs. FFD’s challenge, to accountfor over a third of the FA’s aims, in supporting the goal to make Women’s Football the secondlargest team sport in the country behind men’s football, is one which The Football League Trustis relishing. Nicol Meredith, National Women’s and Girls’ Football Project Co-ordinator said: “This is afantastic opportunity; the magnetism of our club badges within local communities matched withthe passion of our coaches presents a solid foundation to deliver engaging FFD sessions. TheTrust will embrace this chance, taking great pride in helping to make The FA national female goala reality.” Mike Evans, General Manager of The Football League Trust added:  “We are delighted tobe working in partnership with The FA and Sport England on Female Football Development.  Alarge number of our 72 trusts already deliver women’s and girls’ football to a very high standard, but this additional funding will allow more trusts to get involved, and allow us to service thedemand that we know is out there to get more females into the game.” FFD sessions aim to provide a relaxed and welcoming football environment, with a keyfocus on Fun, Fitness and Friendship. Nicol Meredith said: “Whether it’s literally your first kick of a football or you’re ready to easeyour way back into playing pressure free, give it a go. The social aspect plays a huge part; it’sabout having a laugh with friends or people who soon will be, as team sport creates a unique bondbetween people from diverse backgrounds, helping to develop character, and skills transferablebeyond the game. For those disillusioned by fitness, with tedious treadmills and heavy gym fees,FFD sessions offer a refreshing change, putting fun back into keeping healthy.” Matt Chart, Northampton Town FC’s Female Football Development Officer, commented:“We’re really excited to be a part of this inspiring programme, and look forward to NorthamptonTown FC being among the clubs at the forefront of the future female game in England. Thepopularity of Women’s football in our Town continues to grow, and we’re delighted that we can runfun sessions and open avenues for those who wish to progress beyond this.” To learn more about Northampton Town’s Female Football Development programme, andhow you can get involved with the upcoming sessions, visit www.ntfc-fitc.co.uk.(Source: www.northantsfa.co.uk)
