In the NW part of the Adriatic CarbonatePlatform (AdCP), in Istria region, during LateAlbian diagenetic silicification occured. Silicificationtook place within the peritidal carbonate sequencescomprising intertidal carbonate breccias andlaminated cyanobacterial limestones, as well assubtidal mudstones peloidal wackstones/packstones.Three silicified layers can be traced, more or lesscontinuously, along the 30km traverse. Accordingto their position in the sedimentary column and totheir geometry, they are interpreted as three possibleevents of aeolian input of silica (volcanic ash) tocarbonate platform environment. Sedimentological,mineralogical and geochemical analysis wereperformed on the samples from the silicified layers(ranging from 15cm to 2m in thickness), as wellas from the related limestones and marls/clayeylimestones. Silicification changed primary carbonatesediments in places almost completely and formedso-called “ quartz diagenetic sediments” (up to 98%of Si02), which contain several types of quartz(idiomorphic authigenic quartz, microcrystalinequartz aggregates, chert-like clusters). Distributionsof microelements and REE indicate differences ofthe silicified layers from surrounding limestones.Insoluble residues of clayey limestones predominantlycontain illite-smectite minerals, together with quartz,some feldspars and amorphous material.

These results support assumption aboutthe input of the source material for silicification tocarbonate platform. Current investigations (SEM)should give additional informations about the sourceand mechanisms of silicification.

RECORD OF THE FARAONI ANOXICEVENT (LATE HAUTERIVIAN) IN THE

ULTRAHELVETIC DOMAIN

An equivalent of the Faraoni Level, originallydescribed in the Umbria-Marche Basin (central Italy)as an upper Hauterivian regional marker-bed, andthen identified in southern Alps (Italy), VocontianBasin (SE France) and Subbetic Basin (Spain), wasrecently recognised in the Ultrahelvetic domain alongthe Veveyse de Chatel-Saint-Denis section (externalPrealps, Switzerland) by Busnardo et al. (2003).

The trend in the evolution of oxygen andcarbon isotopic ratios and trace elements (Sr, Mn, Fe)from the carbonates show that a 4-meter thick criticalinterval of the upper Hauterivian (Pseudothurmaniaangulicostata ammonite Zone) succession of theVeveyse de Chatel-Saint-Denis section experiencedstrong environmental changes. This interval coincideswith an increase in marine organic matter (1.5 % TOCand hydrogen index values up to 460 mg HC/g TOC).

This organic matter enrichment associatedwith changes in the ocean chemistry is probablythe record of the Faraoni ‘Anoxic Event’, althoughits sedimentary expression in the Ultrahelveticdomain is less obvious compared to other Tethyanbasins (Baudin et al., submitted). It should be noted,however, that the sequential position of this level isexactly the same in the different basins, e.g. the basalpart of a transgressive phase.

This new site allows to extend the distributionof this late Hauterivian anoxic event in an intermediatepaleogeographic domain between the Umbria-Marcheand the Vocontian Basins.
