Spotlight – Honduras – COVID-19 Daily PAHO CO Situation Report 21 September 2021 Current Situation: From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as of 21 September 2021, a total of 359,768 cases of COVID-19 have been reported. Of these cases, 108,566 (30.18%) have recovered, and 9,537 (2.65%) have been reported dead. As of Epidemiological Week (EW) 36 Epidemiological Trends: Figure 1 illustrates the cumulative positivity rate data by department as of 13 September 2021. The national incidence rate (positivity) increased to 3,775 confirmed cases per 100,000 population, an increase of 2.19% in relation to EW-35 (3,694 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The departments with the highest rates were: Francisco Morazán (6,494 cases per 100,000 population), La Paz (4,972 cases per 100,000 population), Cortés (4,506 cases per 100,000 population), Valle (4,183 cases per 100,000 population), El Paraíso (4,120 cases per 100,000 population) and Islas de la Bahía (3,929 cases per 100,000 population). The departments with the greatest percent increments in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases between EW-35 and 36 were: Gracias a Dios (14.83%), Santa Bárbara (4.30%), Olancho (3.41%), Lempira (3.38%), Yoro (3.19%), Copán (2.53%) , Cortés (2.50%) and Atlántida (2.41%) Mortality: Figure 2 Illustrates cumulative mortality rate data by department as of 13 September 2021. During EW-

36, the national mortality rate increased to 100 deaths per 100,000 population, an increase of 3.09% with respect to the EW-35

mortality rate (97 deaths per 100,000 population). The departments with the highest rates were: Francisco Morazán (149 deaths per 100,000 population), Cortés (129 deaths per 100,000 population), Valle (103 deaths per 100,000 population), La Paz (102 deaths per 100,000 population) and Atlántida (99 deaths per 100,000 population). The departments with the greatest percent increase in COVID-19 related deaths between EW-35 and 36, were: Gracias a Dios (6.67%), Valle (6.56%), Yoro (5.35%),

Atlántida (4.58%), Choluteca (4.08%), Olancho (4.04%), Francisco Morazán (3.88%) and Cortés (3.70%). Hospitalizations: As of 13 September 2021, the public hospital network of Honduras reported a percentage occupancy of 63%. The occupation of hospital beds was 61% and of ICU beds 85%. However, regarding occupation in the country's specialty hospitals, the National Cardiopulmonary Institute of Tegucigalpa, reported 37% in the ward and 100% in the ICU, the Hospital Escuela Universitario de Tegucigalpa, reported 80% in the ward and 100% in the ICU , the María de Especialidades Pediátricas de Tegucigalpa hospital, reported 100% occupancy in the adult ward, 146% in the pediatric ward, 80% in the ICU and 150% in the PICU, the San Felipe de Tegucigalpa General Hospital, 75% in ward and 100% in the ICU, the Mario Catarino Rivas hospital in the city of San Pedro Sula, reported 81% occupancy in the ward, 83% in the ICU and 175% in the PICU and the Leonardo Martínez hospital, reported 93% room occupancy.

The highest rates in the region are seen in the US and Cuba. In North America, the US and Canada have the highest incidence. All states in the US have an incidence higher than 200 per 100,000 population, with Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alaska, and Montana and its

surrounding states with a rate >500 per 100,000 people. In Canada, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories have a higher incidence than the rest of the country.

In Central America, Costa Rica has the highest incidence rate in the region, while Belize (Belize, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, Cayo), Guatemela (Zacapa, Sacatepequez), Panama (Colon), and El Salvador (San Salvador) have high rates as

well. In South America, there is an overall lower incidence rate, except in parts of Brazil (Roraima, Mato Grosso, Toncatins, Goias, Parana, Espirito Santo) and Argentina (Catamarca, La Pampa).

In the Caribbean, Cuba had the highest incidence, with its territories of Pinar del Rio, La Habana, Villa Clara, Sancti

Spiritus, Camaguey, Las Tunas had an incidence >500 per 100,000 population. Jamaica reported an increased incidence as well over the last 2 weeks, with all territories reporting >200, and some territories (Hanover, St

James, Trelawney, St Thomas) with >500 cases per 100,000 population. Guyana (Regions 8 & 7), as well as the French territories of French Guiana, and Guadeloupe also have a high incidence of cases in EW 36 and 37.
