JCNA UpdateMany JCNA members are currently in the path of hurricanes and other storms, and our thoughts are with them.

As our season of competitive events draws to a close, members are checking regional and north American standings on the JCNA website www.jcna.com . Be aware that what is posted there has been submitted by club chief judges. It is in a constant state of change as results come in, so not always current. Be patient.

After two terms as North West Region Director, JCNA has asked me to continue for the 2018 - 2020 term, to which I have agreed. Nominations have been received in all regions and ballots will be inserted in the upcoming Jaguar Journal. Even in regions with only one candidate, votes are requested and required, so please mark your ballot, for your region only, and return to JCNA as directed.

The next JCNA Board of Directors meeting I will attend is September 25. Out of that may come news which I will share at the October CXKJR/CCMGC membership meeting.

JCNA North West Region JDRC NWA Club SlalomKurt Jacobson, President Jaguar Drivers & Restorers Club of Northwest America

The Seattle-based Jaguar Drivers and Restorers Club put on their first JCNA-sanctioned Slalom in more than a decade. It took place on August 12 at the Emerald Downs horse racetrack in Auburn, just south of Seattle. Our club leadership decided to hold a slalom again because research and comments by members indicated that younger buyers of newer model Jaguars, as well as competitive club veterans wanted more performance driving opportunities. We also felt that another Northwest Region slalom should be offered due to the unavailability of the CXKJR/CCMGC slalom venue this year.

Art Dickenson from the Pacific Jaguar Enthusiasts Group assisted setting up the timing equipment, walking the drivers through the course and giving many driving tips. Clive Townley from the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria also helped out.

[Editor’s note: The JDRC club has tentatively planned their next JCNA Slalom to take place August 5, 2018, subject to identifying a suitable venue. This is the day following the Jaguars on the Green Concours at the LeMay Museum in Tacoma on August 4.]

Major North American MG Events in 2018

June 13 – 17: The North American MGA Register’s GT-43 in Richmond, Virginia. For the event announcement, see: http://www.namgar.com/events/calendar_details/gt-43/ Those attending GT-43 are encouraged to drive 180 miles northwest to Gettysburg for MG2018 the following week.

June 17 to 22: The North American MGB Register’s MG2018 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The host hotel is the Wyndham Gettysburg, an upscale hotel near the historic battefield, with a rate of $129 US + taxes. The event website, with details of the schedule, is now live at www.MG2018.namgbr.org

Stay tuned for information on various MG Convoys that will be travelling from the west coast to these two events next year.

September 10 to 15: the GoF West 2018 will take place in South Lake Tahoe in Nevada. While initially GoFs (Gatherings of the Faithful) were focused on older MGs, now all MG owners are encouraged to

attend. The website www.gofwest.org is live and includes information on the event schedule. Online registration is open and reservations can now be made at the Host Hotel, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. n

H ello from the other side of the pond. We had a really good day today at Jaguar, Land Rover Classic Works Facility in Coventry. Jaguar cars has been

owned by Tata Motors of India since 2008, and right from the beginning they believed in the brand and invested heavily.

When they bought the company there were 9,000 employees and four plants in England with one scheduled to close. Today they have 45,000 employees and many factories in multiple countries on three continents. They have also expanded the number of models they sell.

The Jaguar/Land Rover brand wants to push their heritage to help sell more new cars, so they have started Classics. This is “Jaguar Land Rover” and they have sent representatives traveling the world buying up old Jaguars and Series 1 Land Rover Defenders. For a price they will sell them to you, then restore the vehicle to original. The completed Land Rovers sell for around 95,000 pounds and an E-Type about 300,000 pounds! The prices are grand, especially when you take into consideration the exchange rate, but the product they turn out is beautiful to say the least.

We toured their insanely huge and beautiful facility and saw an original C-Type Jaguar being prepped for Goodwood the following weekend. Most models were represented in various stages of restoration. Their philosophy is simple - remove absolutely everything, rebuild the parts if possible or replace them with their own factory parts they make, then reassemble.

My point to all this is that Jaguar was and is an important brand to Tata and they truly believe in it. The announcement today, that all models will be hybrid or straight electric within the next couple years, is major one

for Jaguar.

Let’s now compare this to MG which, since 2009 has been owned by SAIC Motor Corporation Limited formerly Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and is a

Chinese state-owned company headquartered in Shanghai, China.

In 2011 they cancelled production of the two-seat convertible MG TF permanently and came out with the utilitarian models MG6 in 2011 and MG3 in 2012. Production ceased in Longbridge UK in 2016 and all models are now made exclusively in China.

They continue to produce vehicles today and now

include an SUV/crossover with a smaller version announced which will come out in the near future - but no convertible sports cars. An all-electric sports car version is proposed for sometime late this decade or early next.

But it is nothing more than a concept at this point, and it is not a convertible!

As I wrote in a Classical Gas article a few years back, it is my dream someday to have the MG company proudly sell a two-seater open top sports car again and be as confident and proud of its heritage as Tata is about Jaguar. I was 13 years old when the MGB was last sold in North America and by the time this is published I will be 50!

I still sit and wait!

T he 48th Annual Heritage Weekend opened with a Welcome Reception at the Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver on Friday, August 18. One hundred vehicles were on

the field at North Vancouver’s Waterfront Park on Saturday, including 40 Jaguars, 40 MGs, 9 “Other British”, and 6 BMOC British motorcycles. The Heritage Presenting Sponsor, Jaguar Land Rover Richmond displayed 5 new Jaguar models on the field: F-Pace, SF, XJ, F-Type and XE. The Saturday show included Entrants Choice Voting and a judged JCNA-sanctioned Concours. There was Afternoon Tea & British Biscuits and a silent auction

on the field, with framed photos of participant cars distributed before participants left the field. Featured MG models this year - the 70th Anniversary of the MG Y-Type and the 50th Anniversary of the MGC. Awards were presented at the Saturday dinner at the Host Hotel, the North Vancouver Holiday Inn and Suites. Sunday included a Scenic Drive and Lunch at the Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club in South Surrey.

INTERVIEW WITH BARNEY GAYLORD

arney Gaylord likes to drive. Since GT-42 in Solvang, CA, in June, he has driven through Northern California, Oregon, Washington,

British Columbia, and the Yukon, to be in Anchorage, AK, for the July 4th Independence Day parade. A few days later he drove north to Prudhoe Bay, and then turned south to retrace his route. He arrived in Surrey, BC, around July 26th, where he stopped for four days.

Fortunately, he also likes to talk.

Q How long have you been on the road for this trip?

A We left Naperville, IL, on May 5th, 2014, the day we sold the house. I am traveling with my navigator, Elliot (his 27 year old son). One of the aims of this trip around the US and Canada is to visit as many British car repair shops as possible. Reports and photos are being added to the MGAGuru.com website for reference. Shops that have closed are also listed, but with a line through it, so people know it is no longer in business.

Q How many miles have you driven since May 2014?

A To date it is around 128,000 miles. In the past month, we have done two oil changes, which is 10,000 miles.

Q Have you had any major mechanical issues during this trip?

A In August 2014, #4 piston broke in North Carolina, and this damaged the cylinder wall. We had to fit a thick liner to that cylinder, and fit a +60 piston to match the other three. The car was off the road for a week. The engine has done 100,000 miles since that repair.

In Spring 2016, we fitted a new cylinder head as one exhaust valve seat was receded. We have also replaced 2 head gaskets as they failed between 3 and 4. Early in 2017, 3 mounting studs on a front shock absorber broke, and the 4th stud was bent.

We have also had 2 gearbox lay shafts fail (first one in September 2015) in 80,000 miles. MOSS had a problem with these not being hardened correctly during manufacture, and the bearing surface did not last.

Q What other long distance trips have you done?

A In 1989, we drove from Naperville, IL, to GT-14 in Indianapolis. But we took the long way to get there covering 12,779 miles, through 38 US States, visiting all NAMGAR Chapter Clubs, and going into Mexico and Canada on the way.

we drove over 19,000 miles in 8 weeks. Posting photos of this trip in January 1998 on a website gave me the idea for my own site, and I registered MGAGuru as my domain name.

Q Which Clubs are you a member of?A My home Club since 1992 is the Chicagoland

MG Club, and I am the webmaster for this Club. It was the Chicagoland MGB Club originally until I suggested that they change the name by dropping the “B”. It took more than half a year to petition the members, have a vote, and do the necessary legal paperwork to get member approval and make the change. When it did, the membership doubled to over 200 members.

I am also a member of NAMGAR, although my membership lapsed for a couple of years when NAMGAR decided not to give CMGC Chapter status (another club in Illinois objected). But this was resolved a few years later.

I received NAMGAR’s Mac Spears Award in Reno in 2011, and the MG Drivers’ Club of North America gave me the Cecil Kimber Award in 2007, even though they had no idea who I was. They had received so many nominations for me that it made them decide that I deserved the Cecil Kimber Award.

Q When did you start the MGAGuru website?

A In 2002. I had written about 400 pages of tech information, and was answering queries by email, I decided I needed somewhere to post these so that (a) people could reference them, and (b) I did not have to keep repeating the answers to the same questions.

Q How many pages is it now?

A About 3,000 pages, but I am not adding pages at the rate I used to, due to having very little time while on the road.

Q How many visits does the website get?

A Around 3,000 per day, from all over the world.

Q How many people have contributed to the website content?

A About two thirds of all the pages have been initiated by a query from an MGA owner. I estimate there have been about 500 different contributors to various pages, including addendums.

Q What car are you driving?

A It is a 1958 MGA 1500 model. It has a 1600 block, bored to +60 oversize. It has an 1800 head. The larger valves are the same as those in a Mk II head. The car has the original gearbox, but I have fitted a 3.9 diff.

Q How do you finance your travel?

A I get a monthly Social Security check, and we live pretty frugally.

Q Where are you going next?

A We don’t plan very much in advance. When we leave Surrey, we will head onto Vancouver Island, with a stop planned in Victoria. Then we will drive up the Island to Port Hardy. Eventually, we will drive Canada from west to east, stopping off at Car Clubs along the way.

Q How old are you?

A I am currently 68 years old.

The Last WordNOVEMBER 5 - KRUISE FOR KIDS Doug & Rhonda Gale

K ruise for Kids is in its 34th year of helping the less fortunate at Christmas through cash and toy donations to the Lower Mainland

Christmas Bureau. All toys and donations go directly to the Bureau for distribution to children in the Greater Vancouver-Fraser Valley area, with car clubs throughout the lower mainland area holding fund-raising activities and raffles throughout the year to raise money for the Toy Run and Parade. On the first Sunday in November, drivers and vehicles gather at Guildford to pick up a registration form, visit friends and then bring their brand new (unwrapped) toy to a second location where these toys and cash are presented to the Christmas Bureau.

Again this year we would like to encourage you to not only donate but to also decorate your car (and perhaps yourself) and come out for the Run. There will be T-shirts for the first 150 entrants, and dash plaques for the first 200. In addition to tons of door prizes, there will be trophies for the Best Decorated Vehicle, Best Dressed Driver and Crew, Best Club Turnout and Best Club Display.

We look forward to seeing you at Guildford on November 5th by the Red Robin restaurant (10237 152nd Street, Surrey.) Assembly begins at 8:30 am, with departure promptly at 10 am. Enter from 152nd, keep left – the parking lot has changed drastically. C hris Down and Ruth Schmidt, the organizers of the highly successful May 6 Drive Your MG or Jaguar Day Poker Run, have another fun day planned.

The Fall Run and Lunch will start at the Starbucks next to the Hard Rock Casino on United Boulevard and Schooner in Coquitlam. Cars should gather at 9:00 am for a 9:30 departure. The run will involve wonderfully scenic and windy roads enroute to Harrison Hot Springs and will take approximately two hours, including opportunities for rest stops. The destination for lunch is the Old Settler, a beautiful log cabin pub in downtown Harrison Hot Springs. It gathers very good reviews on TripAdvisor for its food and service.
