Hollywood - For as long as she can remember, Irina Bashmakova has had problems with her eyes. Wearing glasses since the second grade - and contacts since her early teens, the 30-year-old stay at home mother was very near sighted and was searching for laser surgery that would correct the problem and eliminate the glasses or contacts. While she had the problem, it was- n’t new to her family. Nearsighted- ness, or Myopia, as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred. People with Myopia can have difficulty clearly seeing a movie or TV screen or the whiteboard while they are in school. Irina found that Myopia occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is too curved. As a result, the light entering the eye isn't focused correctly, and distant objects look blurred. Because she realized that some- thing needed to be done - Irina began asking around for the best area doctor and eye center. That is how she dis- covered the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman. When she came in for her consul- tation, Irina was blown away by the new Hollywood office as well as every- one who was involved. It was some- thing she never expected. “I remember reading about the pa- tients who had different procedures done,” she recalled. “The one thing that I took away from those articles in the Sun Times Newspaper was how Dr. Braverman and his staff were talked about often for the way they handled each patient. That was a huge selling point and also made me feel so much at ease.” So, last October, after consulting with Dr. Braverman, who explained every facet of the procedure, Irina em- barked on a journey that would elimi- nate the blurry vision and replace it with clear eyesight. It truly left her speechless. “All I could remember, after surgery, when I had no problem seeing, that I started to cry,” she recalled. “It was the first time in my life that I could ever remember seeing so clearly. It was in- deed life-changing.” As she recovered from the Laser Vision Correction (PRK) and felt bet- ter and better every day, Irina was ready to recommend the procedure, Dr. Braverman, the professional staff and the state-of-the-art facility, to any- one and everyone who would listen. “I can understand how people would be apprehensive about anything to do with their eyes,” she said. “But after everything I experienced, I would tell everyone to check it out. It has re- ally made a difference in my life. What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natu- ral lens of the eye, responsible for fo- cusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradu- ally over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, im- paired depth perception, and in- creased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two condi- tions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare dis- ability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract sur- gery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dis- solved using high frequency ultra- sound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye quali- fies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, in- cluding softening up of the cloudy camera lens. This Femtosecond Laser Assisted Surgery reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a del- icate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the heal- ing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to re- turn to normal activity almost immedi- ately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is oth- erwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of pa- tients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent devel- opments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded pre- mium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braver- man's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the pa- tient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser Sys- tem, for unsurpassed Femtosecond Laser Assisted cataract surgery per- formance.
