Reflecting on God’s Word My house shares a back yard with four college students. Ryan is one of them. Every morning the first thing Ryan does is go out the back door with a bagful of nuts and feed the squirrels. They hang out in our apple tree the way teenagers hang out around malls. One of the squirrels has become particularly bold and now waits expectantly for Ryan right at the back door. Lately the squirrel won’t go away, no matter the time of day, no matter who’s in the back yard. The squirrel just won’t leave, nuts or no nuts, people or no people. Because it’s become pesky, I now ignore the squirrel most of the time. Though Ryan doesn’t, I do. Nevertheless, the squirrel is slowly getting my attention. Over the course of my lifetime, God is getting my attention, too. People tend to hear this week’s Gospel parable about the widow who keeps knocking on the judge’s door as a story about God who eventually gives in to the widow. I think it’s more a story about me eventually giving in to God. I hope God’s not offended by being compared to a squirrel, but God is much more like the squirrel (or the widow) than like the judge. God’s the one who does the pleading, it seems to me. While the parable seems to say, “Don’t lose heart; God will eventually hear and an-swer,” perhaps it’s really saying, “Don’t lose heart; God will not give up knocking on your door.” —Rev. Joseph J. NEW CHURCH SOUND SYSTEM

We are happy to inform you that during this next week a new sound system will be installed in our church. This project will take place from Monday, October 21st to Friday, October 25th. Due to the need for scaffolding and other equipment, the church will be closed for these five days. The Eucharistic Chapel will be opened but must be entered from the chapel door. Access to the church itself will be closed off for safety reasons. The regularly scheduled weekday Masses will be celebrated in Msgr. Killeen Hall. We have been assured that we will be back in the church by next weekend, with our new sound system fully installed. We thank you for your patience and for your contributions which have made this important improvement possible.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Fri-day afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in fami-ly leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life com-mitments and a day of abundant joy and en-richment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, no-tice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. Meditation

“Confessing with the lips” (Romans 10:9) im-plies that personal faith must express itself in public witness. A Christian may never think of belief as a private act. Faith is choosing to “stand with the Lord,” and this demands that we accept the social responsibilities that flow from what we believe (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 10). October opens with “Respect Life Sunday,” and, in this Year of Faith, Jesus’ disciples pray in our name: “Increase our faith.” How com-forting is Jesus’ response. Faith cannot be measured by quantity but by quality—faith’s willingness to trust, risk, dare—and when we see a need, to act on it. Jesus saw ten lepers and healed them; the Samaritan saw that he was healed and gave thanks, faith transforming his healing into salvation. If God sometimes seems slow to act, like the judge in Jesus’ story, could God be inviting us, who experience Jesus’ self-sacrificing love in the Eucharist, to make God’s work of love and justice our own? Octo-ber’s final Sunday prepares us for the Year of Faith’s final month with Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and tax-collector. Though everyone presumed the Pharisee to be faith personified, he was not praying to God at all, just talking to himself. He replaced the praise of God with a litany of self-congratulation, and intercession with judging his neighbor. As the Year of Faith draws to a close, Jesus asks each of us, which of these two are you?

Family Gospel Reflection

In the Gospel today Jesus helps his followers understand that God always listens to their prayers. Jesus tells a story about a widow and an unjust judge. At the time when this Gospel was written, widows were treated unfairly. The widow in today’s story does not give up hope. She keeps asking the judge for fairness. The widow wears down the unjust judge and to keep her from bothering him, the judge grants her justice.

Jesus tells this story to help his listeners so that they will under-stand that they should not give up hope. God always hears our prayers. We can ask God for help and trust that God listens.

ORACIÓN PERSISTENTE Hasta donde sabemos, los autores del Nuevo Testa-mento no pasaron mucho tiempo juntos después de la Resurrección. Tomaron muy en serio la orden de ir a las naciones y esparcir la Buena Nueva. Pablo y Lucas son una excepción pues viajaron juntos en jornadas misioneras. No es accidental, entonces, que la perseve-rancia en la oración sea un tema favorito de ambos au-tores. El Evangelio de san Lucas (que habla más fre-cuentemente sobre la oración de Jesús), los Hechos de los Apóstoles y las cartas de san Pablo, todas nos ex-hortan a rezar incesantemente. La personalidad de Pablo era ciertamente tenaz; muy posiblemente él habría admirado la persistencia de la viuda en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy. El pro-pósito de estos pasajes no es hacernos pensar –como hacen los bebés y los niños pequeñitos– que si persisti-mos en gritar y llorar, eventualmente conseguiremos lo que queremos. No, el punto es que cuando los verdade-ros discípulos creemos en algo, persistimos y seguimos creyéndolo sea conveniente o inconveniente, aún cuan-do nos tropecemos con obstáculos aparentemente insu-perables. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1823 se fundó el pueblo de San Rafael de las Quebradillas en Puerto Rico. Este pueblo fue dedicado al santo patrón de los pescadores. Ra-fael, también es el ángel patrono de la salud. Aunque hoy día su fiesta esta combinada con los otros arcángeles el 29 de septiembre, en el viejo calendario este santo fue conmemorado el 24 de octubre. Rafael (Dios salva) se encuentra en el libro de Tobías y según el autor bíblico, este ángel es el ángel de la guarda de Tobías. El mismo Rafael se presenta como uno de los siete ángeles o ar-cángeles que llevan las oraciones de los justos al trono de Dios y que gozan de la presencia glorio-sa del Santísimo (Tobías 12:15). Mi padre siempre dice que hay que pedir una cosa a Dios, la salud. Si tenemos la salud nada nos falta. Es interesante que en latín, salud y salvación son la misma palabra, salus. Our Parish will have an “Altar of Remembrance”. This will be a special space to place pictures of our loved ones who have gone before us to eternal life. It will be located in the vestibule area - by the east side entrance. Please limit the size of the picture frame to 8 x 10 or smaller. You can start putting your pictures up on Friday, October 25th. The altar will be up until November 17th. You can then start picking up your pictures on Monday, November 18th.
