FROM OUR LASALLIAN YOUTH MINISTER: MS STEFANIE BREDA

On Saturday 13th & Tuesday 16th April, nine students represented LaSalle Bankstown at the Lasallian Youth Gathering in Melbourne.

This event recognised the district of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and recently Samoa. The gathering consisted

of 250 individuals, workshops, group ac vi es and many opportuni es to sing and share talent.

The event overall was a success that allowed the students to encounter a wider branch of the Lasallian Family.

I would like to thank Mr Strudwick and Ms Breda in accompanying Jeremiah, Heinz, Nirajan, James, Lazareth, Jacob, Hieu, Harriet and

Julie‐Anne at the event.

NEWS FROM OUR HEAD OF SAINT YON TRADE TRAINING CENTRE: MRS MARGARET PHILLIPS

WORK PLACEMENT PROGRAM ‐ BLOCK 1 2019: The last three weeks have been witness to Saint Yon Trade

Training Centre VET students comple ng their mandatory work placements.

Ini al apprehension was overcome by student prepara on and communica on, then

finally, quiet confidence, as the school uniforms were replaced by the worker’s uniform of

hi‐viz tops and steel capped boots.

Work placement roles varied from Real Estate marke ng to simulated driverless trains,

from drone surveying to wrestling massive diesel assemblies.

Over 80 students were involved in a large slice of industry located in suburbs right across

Sydney and beyond. Loca ons included Artarmon, Blue Mountains, Blacktown, Vaucluse,

Wollongong, Bowral, Casula, Ingleburn, Condell Park, Lidcombe, Richmond, Bringelly and

Green Hills.

Ge ng to some of the sites by 7.00am each morning was an adventure in itself. The

industry exposure for the students will in me, prove invaluable. For so many of our

students the sights, sounds and smells of a worksite are a completely new experience.

With Block 1 completed, all eyes will be focused on Block 2 with great determina on and

op mism. Mr Keith Porter

YEAR 8 SCIENCE CONFERENCE

Last Wednesday, 29th June 2019, the LaSalle Science team and Year 8 students held their annual Science Conference as part of their

assessment task 1.

The aim of the task is to further student understanding into the workings of the

human body, the interconnec ons of the various organ systems, diseases which can

affect systems and the biotechnology that we use to fix/manage these illnesses.

The models on display were of the upmost brilliance and showed the enthusiasm and

passion the students have for science. The amount of effort that went into all models

is something Year 8 and their parents/guardians should be proud of.

On behalf of the science team, I would like to congratulate all students on a job well

done, and to all the parents/guardians who showed up, voted on the models and

made the conference all the more interes ng, I thank you. To the teachers who came

along to observe the brilliant work of the students, a big thank you and most of all,

thank you to my science team who ran the event perfectly, guided the students

during the assessment and helped make the decisions on which student group would

win the Coordinators prize and culminate the results of parental vo ng.

Congratula ons Year 8!!

YEAR 8 MEDIEVAL INCURSION

On Tuesday, 28th May Year 8, had a Medieval Incursion to complement their studies history this term.

The Medieval incursion was a fun learning experience for kids to enjoy and get

involved with the equipment, weapons and armor to feel what knights,

peasants, nobles and others had to go through during their everyday life. ‐

Jacob C

The presenters explained the different armor throughout the Medieval ages

(1000’s to 1700’s). He even let the whole class try on the knight’s helmets,

which was ranging from the Viking period to the Renaissance periods. ‐ Tyrese

There were different types of chain mail sizes. The smaller ones were more

expensive and were safer. It was harder to penetrate it with a sword, while the

bigger rings were easy to penetrate with a sword. ‐ Amy

The Mace was one of the tools that nobody used, because it simply didn’t

work. If you were to swing the mace, the mace would kill you, then the person

next to you and the horse behind you. ‐ Toshe

We had an opportunity to try on and hold everything that they had for the

show. We could fit the helmets, hold the weapons and put on the armour. It

was really fun to see and hold these items and the helmets and swords were

authen c enough, even though they were blunt or for show only. ‐ Emmanuel

We were able to hear all these stories, have a good laugh, learn informa on

and best of all we got to

use the equipment and

have a good me. ‐

Joseph C
