LaSalle Public School April 2016 1600 Mayfair Ave., LaSalle ON 519-978-1823
Dear LaSalle Families,
It is incredibly difficult to believe that April is upon us and we are into
our final three months of this school year.
I want to thank the staff, students, families and the entire school
community for welcoming me to LaSalle Public School one year ago.
It has been a wonderful year in my new role as Principal, and I look
forward to many more years at LaSalle Public. The students are
amazing, and I look forward to coming to work each day to learn with
them. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being partners in
your child's education.
This month, we are pleased to welcome new students and families into
our school for a visit to our Early Years classrooms during "A Day in the
Life" and our "Welcome to Kindergarten" morning. We are so thrilled to
have 50 new registrations for JK/SK and look forward to hosting the
morning of April 5th.
If your family is moving over the summer and your child(ren) will not be
returning to LPS, please let the secretaries or your child's teacher know
so we can keep that in our files when preparing for next year.
We have many activities that will be taking place over the next three
months. We will keep you posted through our school calendar and
your child's agenda. Our grade 3-8 school track and field day will
take place at Sandwich Secondary on May 6th with a rain date of May
9th, grade 8 trip is June 1-3, and our grade 8 graduation is Friday, June
24th. If these events involve you, do not forget to mark them on your
calendar!
As always, please remember that students are not to arrive prior to
9:00am, as there is no supervision until that time. We do appreciate
your help with this, as our number one concern is to keep all students
safe at all times.
Have a great April!

Parent Tool Kit (Teen Edition) The Council of Ontario Directors of Education has developed a Parent Tool Kit: Teen Edition to help parents support and encourage teens.
Topic: How to communicate with your teen without a lot of stress
Tip #1 Make the most of conversations that you do have
Listening is a very important part of communication. Being a good listener when your teen is talking
will improve the conversation. Make time for communicating with your teen. With busy lives and hectic schedules, families often do not get a chance to talk or do things together. Consider setting
one night a week as family time. Watch online videos, a movie, play board games, take part in a sport activity together. Do chores
together. Make the most of the conversations that you do have. Let them start the conversation and ask the questions.
The talks you have may not start to be about school, but when your teens relax and realize that they can talk about anything without judgment they will open up. Teens spend a great deal of time
at school and it is sure to become a topic. They may have setbacks or make mistakes. Consider this a time to talk about how to overcome obstacles.
Most teens are using instant messaging, texting and phone calls to communicate with each other. Set yourself up as a contact to send messages.
Encourage safe and respectful communications with everyone. They will more likely answer a text message than a phone call. Texting is a great way for your teens to communicate with you and not
feel embarrassed about talking with their parents.
More tips to follow next month.
The Zones of Regulation Why not practise some deep breathing techniques with your child at home. It can be done
anytime and is a great strategy to get into the “Green Zone”.

Kids Club Corner – “Were Goin’ Live” Ms. Hailey Trealout, Editor of the LaSalle Post has started an organization called True Reflections-
Celebration of Differences. Its primary focus is to raise funds to help anyone in need. The Kind Kids are interested in purchasing items to create homemade
"Chemo Care Kits" for the Pediatric Cancer Ward at Windsor Regional Hospital.
These kits will be lovingly created by the Kind Kids Club at LaSalle Public and will include items to offer relief of symptoms accompanied by chemotherapy.
Ms. Trealout and her group have offered to hold a
fundraiser for our Kind Kids Club to offset the costs of purchasing these items. The fundraiser will be broadcasted live on TVCOGECO!

event. Please consider attending or providing a donation by going to the link gofundme.com

POSE QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY NEED TO BE ANSWERED
Rhetorical questions such as “Doesn’t a square have four sides?” provide your children with an answer without allowing them to engage in their own reasoning.
INCORPORATE VERBS THAT ELICT HIGHER LEVELS OF BLOOM’S TAXONOMY
Verbs such as connect, elaborate, evaluate and justify prompt students to communicate their thinking and understanding, to deepen their understanding and to extend their learning. Here is a list of verbs that elicit specific cognitive processes to engage thinking:
observe evaluate decide conclude notice summarize identify infer remember visualize compare relate contrast differ predict consider interpret distinguish explain describe
Stimulate thinking by asking open-ended questions ...
• How do you know? • How did you know where…?
• How did you know when…? • Could you use some other materials to…? • How could you record your discovery?
• How did you estimate what the answer could be? • How did you prove your estimate?
• How could you share your discovery? • How could you record your work? • How did you know which…?
• What does (this) ____________ represent?
Open-ended question: What fractions do you see?
Attached is a picture for our math problem of the week. Students are to examine the picture and develop an open-ended math question, and answer it.
Spring Recycling Initiative
We are pleased to be part of a recycling initiative for the month of April sponsored through Eco kids,
Earth Day Canada, and Call 2 Recycle. Students are encouraged to bring in any batteries they have at home, AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V alkaline and rechargeable nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH),
nickel cadium (Ni-Cd), and nickel zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries. Cell phones, lithium, and small sealed lead acid batteries (SSLA/Pb) are to be placed in the bags that are attached to the box.
Prizes: a $2,500 prize will be awarded to the school that collects the most used batteries (total weight divided by school population), and a $1,500 prize will be awarded to the school with the
most creative battery collection display and campaign. Important information:
• Only single-use household batteries will be accepted. • Please note that not all batteries have to be bagged and/or terminals taped. The only chemistries that have to be bagged or taped are Lithium, Lithium-Ion and Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb).
You do not have to bag single-use alkaline, meaning AA, AAA, D, C batteries. • Dented or powdery batteries should not be brought to school.
• Please note that only batteries in Call2Recycle collection boxes will be accepted and eligible for the contest. • Each battery must weigh less than 5 kg!
• Visit their website at call2recycle.ca
LaSalle Public School ECO Team
Junior Boys’ & Girls’ Basketball Both teams are developing their basketball skills and are working very hard at every practice and game. Players are focusing on supporting each other as a “team” while improving on their
shooting, passing, ball handling and offensive/defensive skills. We have made a conscious effort for our players to focus on soft skill development, specifically understanding the game and learning the
nuances to react. Mme. Brown, Mr. Patillo
Fischer Bowl Floor Hockey We were extremely pleased to extend house-league floor hockey to our grade 4s this year. Their excitement was evident from the moment it was proposed, with over 80% of the students participating. Thanks to the help from the grade 7 students, we had four teams compete for the
inaugural 2016 Fischer Bowl, the championship trophy of the Grade 4 League.
Each team (Canucks, Kings, Avalanche and Penguins) played seven games before the top two
teams squared off in the championship. In the end, the Canucks claimed the crown with an 8-3
victory over the Kings and kept their undefeated record intact (7-0-1).
Congratulations to the members of the Canucks (Connor, Cole, Alexiah, Tanner, Morgan, Lily, Josh,
Brayden, Bobby, Xander and Rayne) for a great season. We hope to see them out next year for the
Campbell Cup.
Mr. Seagris
Campbell Cup Floor Hockey
For the very first time in Campbell Cup history, the top team in the regular season went on to claim the championship, however, it came down to a last minute goal by Easton Bomhof for the
Canadiens to eke out a 5-4 victory over the Jets. For those in attendance, they were treated to a memorable game as the Canadiens jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see the Jets claw back with four unanswered goals before Bomhof finally sealed the championship.
A huge thank you to our grade eights who helped coach, officiate and played net.
Congratulations to the members of the Canadiens (Colin, Tyler, Beckham, Easton, Jessica, Gabriel,
GianCarlo, Mohammed, Ryan and Eric) on such a fine season.
Mr. Seagris
