This week’s program was the Regional 4 Way Speech contest competition
The 4-Way Test
From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high
ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and
quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by
Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take
charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow
in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising,
and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to
this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into
more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four
questions:
"Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
The Annual District 5300 Four Way Speech Contest
Purpose
Rotary International District 5300 is composed of 61 clubs in Southern California and Nevada. The
District annually conducts a Four-Way Test Speech Contest to benefit high school age youth. The
specific goals of the contest are:
1. To acquaint a large number of youth with Rotary and the Four-Way Test.
2. To demonstrate and enhance Rotary’s commitment to youth.
3. To heighten awareness of Rotary among youth, parents, schools, and community.
4. To recognize, encourage, and reward hard work and accomplishment among youth.
Eligibility
Public, private, and continuation high school students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to enter the
contest. No student may be a contestant in more than one local club speech contest in any one year.
More than one club may recruit contestants from a high school shared with another club. The Winner
of the District level competition is ineligible to compete in subsequent years.
Topics and Theme
The 2008-2009 theme is Make Dreams Real which is also the Rotary International theme. Any topic
related to this theme will be acceptable, provided that it is not profane, obscene, unpatriotic, or racist.
If a contestant or coach is in doubt about the appropriateness of a topic, the coach or student may
check with the Contest Chairperson of the local club or the District Chairperson. The Chairperson’s
decision will be final. The topic of the speech must be specifically subjected to the Four-Way
Test. This must be done in the body of the speech and is not to be reserved for concluding statements
only.
