But over the next week or so, they’re not alone in seeking make-believe bragging rights or grabbing some real cash. Rodeo has gone fantasy. And in fact, the official online version of fantasy rodeo is celebrating its 10th anniversary at this year’s National Finals Rodeo, where there is plenty of cash on the line, along with the grand prize: a new Dodge Ram truck valued at $40,000. ProFantasyRodeo.com is the brainchild of steer wrestler K.C. Jones — who is competing in his seventh NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center — and business partner Jace Honey. There’s only one “game” in this fantasy league season, though — the NFR. “The National Finals is kind of the Super Bowl for cowboys, ranchers, rural communities,” Jones said. “And our Super Bowl is when you get to watch rodeo on TV.” Jones said the league went to the Web after years of informal play. “Every year, we kind of had a group of buddies, and they’d pick teams — one rider or roper from each event. And at the end of the 10 days, we added up how much each team won,” he said. “We thought it would be cool if we put it online. More people could play, and we’d have bigger payoffs. “It’s grown slowly, but we’re in our 10th year and still doing it.” That includes what was a lean beginning. “The first four years, we guaranteed the money, but we weren’t getting enough entries. We had to borrow from the bank to make payments,” Jones said. “In the fifth year, we barely made enough. Now were getting a little bigger each year.” ProFantasyRodeo.com has paid out more than $1 million in cash and prizes since 2003, attracting rodeo fans hoping not only for the big prize at the end of the NFR, but nightly go-round winnings, too. The main game covers all 10 nights, with entrants paying $89.95 to play, then drafting a team of eight contestants covering the seven events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (one header, one heeler), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. Entrants are constrained by a $550,000 salary cap, and each cowboy and cowgirl has a salary cap value based on ranking heading into the NFR. The No. 1 qualifier in each event costs $150,000, No. 2 is $140,000, and so on down to the No. 15 qualifier at $10,000. So entrants can’t just load up on No. 1 qualifiers, or expect superstar roper and 10-time all-around champion Trevor Brazile to pick up all the slack. The key is filling out the roster with those lower in the standings who present the best opportunity to win money on a nightly basis, at a price that’s cost-effective with the salary cap. Winners are determined based on how much money their team’s contestants earn. The league awards cash prizes to the top six entrants in each of the 10 rounds, from $2,000 for first to $250 for sixth. And after the 10th round, the entrant whose team has won the most overall money — the average, in rodeo parlance — wins the truck, while second place gets $10,000, and payouts go down to eighth place ($500). “It’s really good for rodeo,” said Jones, adding total prize compensation this year will top $160,000. “People are rooting for someone in every event. It makes the Finals more enjoyable. The contestants have a lot more fans now.” And a little more pressure, too. “Fans are saying, ‘You need to do good tonight. You’re on my fantasy team,’ ” Jones said. “If I don’t do any good, I’m gonna let down all my fantasy owners.” For those who missed the deadline for the full 10-round competition, today’s second round marks the beginning of Fantasy rodeo pays big bucks Dodge Ram worth $40,000 goes to entrant who picks best team at NFR PROFANTASYRODEO.COM SEE FANTASY PAGE 4 Semi-sleeper for a team is Luke Branquinho By PATRICK EVERSON LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Event: Steer wrestling 2013 world standing/earnings: Sixth, $69,207 Residence: Decatur, Texas National Finals Rodeo qualifications: 7 (2002-2004, 2006, 2008, 2012-2013 Noteworthy: Jones and business partner Jace Honey run the official fantasy rodeo contest of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Pro Fantasy Rodeo’s popularity grows, deepens fans’ interest in all events

Contestants doing battle at theThomas & Mack Center at thisyear’s Wrangler National FinalsRodeo are competing for more

than $6.25 million. Thanks to Pro Fantasy Rodeo, the

sport’s fans and followers can participatein a contest to put together the best rodeoteam for a chance to win cash and prizes.Similar to the fantasy football swarmthat has enveloped the sports world, ProFantasy Rodeo has grown in popularityby leaps and bounds in the 10 years it hasbeen part of the Wrangler NFR.

Building a fantasy team gives fans achance to enjoy the sport they love on adeep level, giving them added incentive tofollow every event.

“It’s lots of fun,” 2012 overall winnerJustin Caylor, who took home a newRAM truck for putting together thewinning team, told ProFantasyRodeo.com.“Ordinarily, I only pay attention to theroughstock events, but having a teammakes you stay involved with every eventand keeps you cheering your team on.Having a team just makes watching theFinals so much more fun.”

Putting a team together is simple.Every participant begins with a $550,000“salary cap,” with top-ranked contestantscosting $150,000 and 15th-placecompetitors going for $10,000. If yourteam wins the most money over thecourse of the 10-day rodeo, the 3500Crew Cab dually is yours.

Second place is $10,000, and ProFantasy Rodeo will dole out more than$160,000 in cash and prizes. Nightlywinners pocket $2,000, and fans can wineverything from shirts and hats to firepits and Wrangler NFR tickets.

The professional cowboys and cowgirlsget a kick out of being part of fans’fantasy teams.

“What’s fun about it is that, oncepeople get an opportunity to actuallyplay and put a team together, they reallyparticipate and enjoy it,” said WranglerNFR steer wrestler K.C. Jones, who ownsand operates Pro Fantasy Rodeo. “This isour 10th year, and it keeps getting biggerevery year. I really have the satisfactionof knowing it really helps the sport ofrodeo and attracts the fans.

“It just brings another level ofinvolvement for the fans. The contestants

have just as much fun with it, too. Wewant the fans to have a lot of fun with it.”

Considering more than 40 millionAmericans play fantasy football, therising popularity of the game in the sportof rodeo should come as no surprise.

“It’s fun and gives rodeo fans and rodeopeople a competitive deal like fantasyfootball,” reigning World Championbull rider Cody Teel said. “I know a lot ofpeople who do get involved in it, and theyget pretty intense with (fantasy rodeo)and try to use strategy and figure thingsout. It makes it fun.

“It makes me feel good that they haveme on their team, and I’ve had a fewpeople randomly tell me I am on theirteam. You want to pull through for them, and hopefully I will.”

Two-time and reigning World ChampionBareback Rider Kaycee Feild is honoredto be selected for his fans’ teams, and it’ssomething he thinks about even when he’snot in Las Vegas.

“I love it when I hear I’m on somebody’sfantasy team and that they picked meover someone else,” said Feild, whoentered Round 1 in the second spot andcarried a $140,000 fantasy price tag.“You’ve got to take it to heart and use it asan advantage. It’s a neat feeling.”

For 18-time World Champion TrevorBrazile, the game is fun to be a part of,

though Pro Fantasy Rodeo mania canlead to fans asking in-depth and probingquestions.

“It’s real cool and adds anotherelement to (the rodeo),” Brazile said. “Ihave fans wondering which horse I’mriding, and I’m like, ‘Why do you want toknow?’ They say, ‘I’m picking my fantasyteam.’”

One of the best picks last year wasbarrel racer Mary Walker, who won fourrounds, placed in four others and won arodeo-high $146,941 on her way to herfirst gold buckle. She loves Pro FantasyRodeo and what it does for fans.

“Last year, I had a lot of people tellme I was on their fantasy team and howexcited they were to have me,” Walkersaid. “This year, I’ve been getting textsand people coming up to me saying,‘You’re on my fantasy team this year.’ Isaid, ‘I just hope it works out like it didlast year.’

“It really is flattering, and it’s amazingthe fans and people who follow youthroughout the whole year.”

Caylor’s victory last year was awelcome surprise for the assistant rodeocoach at the University of West Alabama. He teamed with his girlfriend, HannahCooke, and took home the top prize afterpicking Feild, saddle bronc rider JesseWright, barrel racer Lisa Lockhart, bullrider Shane Proctor, team ropers ErichRogers and Kory Koontz, Adam Gray inthe tie-down roping and steer wrestlerBray Armes.

“We won some Pro Fantasy money inthe third round, but we sure were excitedto find our team came in first when wechecked the Pro Fantasy Rodeo websiteabout 11 the night of Round 10,” Caylorsaid.

The entry deadline for this year’soverall competition closed whenRound 1 began, but fans still can go toProFantasyRodeo.com and make dailypicks for those prize packages.

Caylor’s advice for anyone debatingabout playing the game?

“Go for it,” he said.A freelance writer based in Colorado Springs, Colo., NealReid spent six years as editor of the ProRodeo SportsNews. His writing has appeared in USA Today, Newsday,Western Horseman,American Cowboy and the DenverPost, among other publications. Follow him on Twitter:@NealReid21.

COURTESY PHOTOThis new Dodge Ram, worth $40,000, is the grand prize in this year’s ProFantasyRodeo.com fantasy contest. Entrants picks eight teammembers, one from each of the seven events at the National Finals Rodeo. There are nightly go-arounds, too.

a daily fantasy contest using the sameconcept, with an entry fee of $10.95 perround. Fans can sign up and draft theirteams at ProFantasyRodeo.com.

So would Jones, who was sixth in theworld standings heading into the NFR,advise team owners to pick him up?

“I see myself on a few teams. I’ve gotsome people out there believing in me,I guess,” said Jones, who then tossedout a semi-sleeper pick who fans oughtto consider: Luke Branquinho, ranked13th in steer wrestling this year. “Hedoesn’t cost too much money, and youget a four-time world champion on yourteam.”

Jones alluded to the 2010 NFR, whenTrevor Brazile and Patrick Smith wereeighth in team roping entering the NFRand stormed all the way to first place, earning $120,419 in 10 days. “They onlycost $20,000 between them.”

Even if you don’t do well in thisfantasy league, you can still pocketsome cash by being the biggest loser. The person with the worst moneytotal over the 10 days gets $1,000. Andshockingly enough, there is a two-timedefending champion in that category,Kash Gaikowski from Colorado.

“To pick eight of them (who) don’thave a very good week is pretty tough, and he’s done it twice,” Jones said.“He’s trying to pick the best team, andhe ends up picking the worst, but he got$1,000 each time.”
