line with the slowly swimming Nicolaand then he seemed seized with con-vulsions. He splashed the water withhis hands and legs, reminding one ofthe actions of a duck which hasreached a pond after a long, dry landjourney. His motions were so violent, that the sea frothed about him. andthe shark was evidently as surprisedat these evolutions as was the crew ofthe Apollo. Obviously they were notto his taste, for he darted off in anopposite direction. By this time theboat had been lowered and in a halfhour both men were aboard the brig.

"I didn't think you were that big afool to risk your life for a dago who'shungry to put a knife in you," re-

marked Ned, reproachfully."Risk!" exclaimed Bradd; "there

wasn't any. If you'd been in the In-

dian ocean you'd know the shark isthe biggest coward that swims andany man can scare 'em off Avho makesa big splutter in the water, and thenI hate the bloody things and I'll balk'em of a meal any day."

Not a word had Nicola spoken toany one since he had been brought onboard, but now he came out of theforecastle and approached Bradd. Heheld out to him the stiletto with thehilt towards his enemy. I never B&W

such a grand gesture of utter surren-der as that. If the Italian had filledthe air with an eloquent speech itcould not have been half as impres-sive. Rough. as was Bradd, old beach-comber of twenty years, he appreciat-ed it.

"Keep your bloomln' knife." he said, and the broad, freckled face broke intoa smile.

In that most monotonous and verydirty Brazilian town, Rio Grande doSul, two very drunken men walkedarm and arm down towards the quay. One sang a coster son;?: in a deep bassand the other in a screechy tenor abarcarole. They were Bradd andNicola, and the sea feud was at anend.

There wore several days of brighteunshine, calm sea and cloudless sky,and on one of these mornings themate was watching the washing downof the deck from the break of thepoop. The holystoning finished, heordered Nicola to son e duty on thefore-topgalla- yard The Italianlooped a line about .is neck and grip-ping a marline ispíke in his teethclimbed the weather rigging. Justas he swung himself over the top helost his hold and fell like a plummetinto the sea.

"Man overboard," yelled O'Neill, who was at the wheel, and he flung alife buoy over the rail.'

The skipper was on deck in oneJump.

"Heave her to," he shouted."Braces," came sharp and curt from

the mate, and the men hurried to obey, casting glances aft.

The brig was making good headway. The wind was fair and Captain Newtonwas making all the use he could of it,having out studding sails and bringingher to the wind with all this canvasflying took time. Two men started tolower the boat, but it was full of woodand that took time. I glanced overthe taffrail, and saw no trace of Nic-ola.

Shark cutting tho water as it maae aStraight course for Nicola.

"It's all up," muttered the mate;"nothing can save him now."

There was a splash, and to our as-

tonishment Bradd had leaped over-board and was swimming fiercely. Helay a course which must bring himbOt ween the Shark and Nicola.

"C:i;l darn ü!" snarled the captain;"two men instead of one gone, andwho'd have thought of Bradd goingover the rail for the dago."

I never saw a man swim as didBradd. using Inverted Sod.There are many kinds of plants like

melons that cannot be transplantedto the open field under ordinary meth-ods, it, was found out long ago, how-ever, that plants that could not betransplanted could be grown on in-

verted sod and the sod itself takento the open field when the p''ant ob-

tained a good growth. Sod for thispurpose should be cut in the veryearly spring, as soon as the frost ismelted below the sod line. This willbe several weeks before it would bepossible to sow seeds in the openground. This sod can be taken intothe greenhouse, the cellar or thedwelling house and receive the seedof the melon, squash, pumpkin, cu-

cumber or other plant

Varietés cf Melons.Varieties of melons do not always

indicate what may be expected fromthat locality. The locality in whicha melon is grown regulates to a largeextent its value, as its flavor dependsupon the sunshine, and moisture itreceives in developing. Thus, the fa-

mous Rocky Ford melon is only thrcommon Gem melon of the Easternstates. But When grown in RockyFord. Colo., under a cloudless skyand supplied with an abundance ófmoisture, it develops a flavor and sizenot found in the more Eastern states.
