La concordancia de los adjetivos
In Spanish , adjectives agree in number and in gender with the nouns that they modify, according to the following patterns:
1. Adjectives that end in –o have four different forms.
Masculine Feminine
Singular chicano chicana
Plural chicanos chicanas
La concordancia de los adjetivos
2. Adjectives that end in any other vowel or consonant have only two forms, singular and plural. Like nouns, they show singular and plural by adding –s to vowels and –es to consonants
Ejemplos: importante → importantesdifícil → difícilesfácil → fáciles
La concordancia de los adjetivos
3. Adjectives that end in –z change the z to c before adding –es.
Ejemplos: feliz → felicestenaz → tenacescapaz → capaces
La concordancia de los adjetivos4. Adjectives of nationality that end in a consonant, or
descriptive adjectives that end in –dor, -ín, -ón, and –án, add –a to show a feminine agreement. These adjectives have four forms.
español española españoles españolas
francés francesa franceses Francesas
encantador encantadora encantadores encantadoras
juguetón juguetona juguetones juguetonas
andarín andarina andarines andarinas
charlatán charlatana charlatanes charlatanas
La concordancia de los adjetivos5. These adjectives have a short masculine form before a
singular masculine noun.
bueno un buen logro but un logro bueno
malo un mal día but una carroza mala
primero primer certamen but un los primeros certámenes
tercero el tercer mes but la tercera celebración
alguno algún hispanohablante but alguna isla
ninguno ningún condado but ninguna provincia
La concordancia de los adjetivos6. If a single adjective follows two nouns and one of the nouns
is masculine, the adjective will be plural masculine. If, however, a single adjective precedes two or more nouns, it will agree with the firs noun.
Ejemplos: En esta región hay volcanes y lomas bonitos .
En las pequeñas islas y bosques encontramos muchos pájaros.
La concordancia de los adjetivos7. Lo, the neuter form of the definite article, can be combined
with songular masculine adjective to refer to abstract ideas.
Ejemplo: Lo bueno (The good thing) es que el cielo está despejado.
La posición de los adjetivos• Although descriptive adjectives normally follow the noun that
they modify, they can be placed before the noun to call attention to the natural characteristic of the noun.
• For these same words, when the adjective is placed after the noun, the adjective is in a position of contrast, identifying a quality in opposition to other more intrinsic possibilities.
Ejemplo: Sobre el acantilado hay bellas flores. Las flores anaranjadas no son muy comunes.
La posición de los adjetivos• The following adjectives change meaning , depending on their
position either before or after the noun.
Veo los mismos puestos en la calle.EL escenario mismo es muy bonito.Hay un hombre viejo que sale primero para hablar de las viejas tradiciones
