The familiar Start menu and desktop

Click to edit Master subtitle style

• The biggest complaint about Windows 8 was the new Start screen

• The problem was especially noticeable on PCs without touchscreens

• Microsoft heard that feedback loud and clear…

• In Windows 10, the Start menu and desktop are back.

Where is my Start Menu?

The new Start menu offers the best of both worlds:– The left side resembles the “classic” Windows 7 Start

menu, with your Most Used apps as well as shortcuts to your account, settings, and power options.

– The right side incorporates the live tiles from Windows 8, which contain headlines, the latest weather, e-mail subject lines, and other up-to-date information from apps that support the feature.

The expanded Task Manager also includes a tab listing all the programs that automatically start with Windows 10. You can disable any of them just by selecting a check box.

If you’re not sure what a process does, use the other option to find the file and look at its properties, or search online.

Snap is an incredibly useful feature and has been around in Windows for several versions. With Windows 10, it gets smarter.

Microsoft’s usage data shows that most people use snap to arrange two windows side by side. Windows 10 makes that easier by showing you a list of available thumbnails after you snap a window to one side of the screen.Easy to snap windows side by side

• In Tablet Mode, the Start menu expands to fill the full screen. All your apps run in full screen mode, too.

• The shortcuts that normally appear on the left side of the Start menu are hidden. Tap the hamburger menu to make them appear.

For hybrid devices like the Surface Pro 3, you can remove the keyboard to transform your device from a laptop to a tablet.

The Continuum feature senses when you’ve removed the keyboard and offers to switch into Tablet Mode for you.

Windows 10 is the same on small mobile devices as it is on big desktops and everything in between.

Connect your phone to a big monitor and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and—voilà!—it’s a PC, capable of running the same app.

Reset your PC

Click to edit Master subtitle style

Windows 8.1 included Reset and Refresh options, but those required that you have the original installation files handy, or a recovery partition that can use up tons of disk space.

Windows 10 doesn’t need any of those things. When you use the Reset option, it rebuilds Windows using the current system files, minus any recent updates that might be the reason you’re resetting.

The whole process takes only a few minutes and is the equivalent of a clean install, without the hassles.

What’s new since Windows 8

Click to edit Master subtitle style

• You can choose to keep your files or delete them

• All your Windows 10 apps are restored from the Windows Store

• If you choose to keep your files, Reset gives you a list of desktop programs you’ll need to reinstall and even saves a copy of the list on the new desktop
