LOVE AND MERCY (12A)

13 MINUTES (15)

This biopic of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson follows his story from inspired creative genius in the 60s to breakdown and depression in the 80s, closely guarded by dubious therapist Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti).

The young Wilson is played by Paul Dano, and the older Wilson by John Cusack. Elizabeth Banks plays Melinda,

The director of Downfall tells the story of Georg Elser, an unsung hero who, in 1939, so nearly succeeded in his attempt to assassinate Hitler – an event that would have changed history, but for a crucial mis-timing of only 13 minutes.

Following Sir David Puttnam’s inspirational talk here in June, we are proud to present the film for which he is probably best known. It’s the fact-based story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, two athletes competing in the 1924 Olympics. The film won 4 Oscars, including best picture, and best original score for Vangelis’ memorable soundtrack. Starring Ian Charleson, Ben Cross, Nicholas Farell, John Gielgud and Nigel Havers.

Supported by Stephen and Judy Cox.

This atmospheric movie – winner of 10 Goyas (Spain’s top awards) is beautifully filmed in the Andalusian wetlands, and set in the 1980s as Spain adjusts from dictatorship to democracy. When teenage sisters are found murdered in a remote rural area, two ideologically opposed cops from Madrid have to find a way to work together, because it looks like this is the work of a serial killer…

“A film as much about the murky history of Spain and the difficulty in shaking it off as it is about the murders” Eye For Film

SOUTHPAW (15)Jake Gyllenhaal is already Oscar tipped for his performance as Billy Hope, a gifted boxer who overcomes his disadvantaged background and literally fights his way to the top and is enjoying the fruits of success when tragedy strikes. To regain control of his life, he’ll have to start at the bottom and fight his way up all over again….

With Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker.

In 1916 a family of pilgrim guides are still living a traditional Bedouin life in the Jordanian desert. Theeb is learning the practices of survival from his older brother Hussein, but his skills are put to use much sooner than expected when he embarks on a perilous journey to guide a British officer to a secret destination.

What would you do, if you could do absolutely anything? That’s what Neil has to decide when a bunch of eccentric aliens (voiced by all the Pythons) decide to confer this power on a randomly chosen human, to see what happens. Result? Total mayhem, as Neil keeps wishing for things which he instantly regrets.

Simon Pegg stars, with Joanna Lumley, Eddie Izzard, Meera Syal, Kate Beckinsale, Prof Brian Cox and a talking dog (voiced by Robin Williams) joining in the fun.

When a coup d’état ousts an ageing dictator from his life of luxury, he ends up on the run with his adored grandson. They pose as street musicians exposed to the very hardships that provoked his downfall - and the bounty on their heads means they live in daily fear of discovery…..

“This is a really good film…Absorbing and gripping, with an unsuspected gift for satire and suspense” The Guardian

GEMMA BOVERY (15)

When Gemma and Charlie Bovery arrive in a country town in Normandy, the local baker (Fabrice Luchini) immediately notices parallels between them and Flaubert’s similarly-named characters. As life apparently imitates art, he valiantly tries to steer Gemma away from Emma’s fate…

This lighthearted homage to Madame Bovery is based on the graphic novel by Posy Simmons, and stars Gemma Arterton and Jason Flemyng.

An adaptation of August Strindberg’s play, transposed to the Irish countryside in 1890. It’s midsummer’s eve, the one night of the year when the classes mix and boundaries are blurred. Alone in the house with two servants, Miss Julie begins a flirtation with her father’s valet, but it becomes increasingly clear she’s playing with fire, and courting disaster… Starring Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton.

“Chastain is, quite frankly, extraordinary. It’s a powerhouse performance” RogerEbert.com

With Brie Larson and Tilda Swinton.

1971: an assortment of friends in Vancouver - Canadian hippie journalists, photographers, musicians, scientists, and American draft dodgers – are pioneering a template for environmental activism which will end up creating the worldwide organisation Greenpeace. The film draws on archive footage and interviews with the key players, bringing these extraordinary characters and their intense, sometimes eccentric and often dangerous world alive.

Val is the live-in housekeeper for a São Paulo couple, and like a second mother to their son Fabinho. When her own teenage daughter – left in the care of others since childhood – comes to stay, she shocks Val by ignoring the unspoken class barriers, but Jéssica’s influence could begin a process of change… This warm and funny movie won the Berlin Film Festival’s Audience Award.

“Beautifully written and acted with precision, this film’s a winner” Hollywood Reporter

Loaded with music and live performance, this uplifting comedy-drama stars Meryl Streep as Ricky, a guitar heroine who has given everything up for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom. Now she’s going home to her long-suffering husband and family – but will they welcome her return? Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer plays her fictional daughter, and Kevin Kline her husband.

Margherita’s got a lot on her plate; she’s in the middle of directing a film starring a somewhat erratic actor (a very funny John Turturro), and she also has to cope with moving out of her boyfriend’s apartment and an emotional teenage daughter. Then she hears that her mother is terminally ill. The action shifts between the film and real life as Margherita endeavours to survive, as best she can.

Winner of the best documentary award at the Edinburgh Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, this remarkable film documents the extraordinary story of the six Angulo brothers, for 17 years almost completely confined to their small New York apartment. Their only access to the outside world is through movies, which they watch avidly and then act out, making sets, props and costumes from scrap materials. Finally, they have to make the terrifying transition to the outside world.

“Altogether fascinating” The Guardian (5 stars)

Greg is pretty awkward at the best of times, so when his mother forces him to visit Rachel, a girl he hardly knows who is seriously ill, it’s a nightmare scenario; but his reluctant slacker humour wins her over, and against all odds, they become friends. A funny, moving and unsentimental story about friendship and surviving your teens.
