From Averie ~~Today, as I was walking up to the wash rack, Jorgetold me to get RSV Noble Sol for my lesson. I wassuper excited that I was going to ride Noble Sol. As Iwalked up to his pen his ears perked up and he put hishead right into the halter. As I was getting on him Iwas excited because of his gentleness and kindnessand ability to shine in his personality. Noble is the typeof horse that connects with you and understands you.As we rode in the field Noble started gaiting around thetree and his gait was super smooth and it was amaz-ing. Jorge was on MLM Bandolero next to me. I pic-tured in my mind that I was riding in the show. I hada huge smile on my face because I had a really goodteacher and a really good horse and I knew that Icould trust both of them.I also had the confidence that both Jorge and Noblecould teach me in many different ways good horse-manship, how to show, and how to handle and care fora horse. My ride today was spectacular!! I look for-ward to every lesson!!!

Ranch News

From Michele Wilson, of Rancho Micada ~~Coralina is a bay filly who was born on the evening ofFebruary 12, 2012. We thought that Marimba's preg-nancy might result in twins so, when we were bringingMarimba home to our ranch, we considered the prob-lems with a "high risk" pregnancy, as our vet called it.We took Marimba to the Rocking J Bar S Ranch, a largePaint Horse ranch near our home in Desert Hills, AZ.The Rocking J Bar S is also a premier breeding andfoaling facility.Marimba was put in the foaling area with other mares, all Paints and Quarter Horses!, She was monitored un-der camera until her foaling day.To our great relief, Marimba had one perfect filly on avery chilly Arizona evening. Jean Simmons, the ranchowner, said that she had seldom seen a foal "spring"up so soon after being born - within 15 minutes. Wenamed this filly Coralina, after my German GreatGrandmother, Amalia Coralina Wolf. I am sureGreat Gram would be honored to have this prettyfilly named for her.Coralina was the center of attention on the ranch.Smaller than the Paint and Quarter Horses foals, she was more active and loved by everyone whowalked by the stall. I had so many people admireher "color".Now that Coralina and Marimba are home, Adamand I are enjoying watching them interact withour other Peruvian horses. Each day is a new ad-venture as this little filly grows up.Coralina (Relicario II x ERB Marimba)

Horse Expo Pomona PremiereA Booming Success!Build it and they will come. And that’s exactly what happened when the gates atHorse Expo Pomona in California opened and peoplepoured into the Fairplex grounds for this first-time-everevent. It was immediately apparent that this was awhole new ‘happening,’ as people stopped in awe whenthey were greeted Thursday morning by Project Cow-boy contestants a-horseback. On Friday and Saturdaymornings, attendees were equally thrilled as the sparklyCalifornia Cowgirls Drill Team and their glitterymounts greeted everyone. Miki Nelsen, owner andfounder of the event, was bound and determined tomake this premiere expo truly different and exciting, from free parking for the first 100 cars each day tosprawling outdoor exhibits and vendors. The three-dayevent made good use of the Fairplex grounds andSouthern California’s extraordinarily good weather.

Vendors spread their wares outside — trailers, trucks, tack, draft horse equipment, hand carved signs, fresh roasted nuts— you name it. Breeds galore strutted their stuff in the out-door arenas. Clinicians presented an array of topics, fromdressage, jumping, animal communication, gaited horses, coltstarting, reined cow horse, western dressage, team driving, tothe making of a ‘super horse.’ Whatever your interest or disci-pline, there were presentations that fit your dream list. Over-all, the atmosphere was festival-like in its celebration of thehorse. So what’s the final scorecard on Horse Expo Pomona?“It was incredible. Vendors were happy, attendees werehappy, clinicians were happy. All our team members sighed abig sigh of cheerful relief after the event, of course,” saysNelsen, “but there was never any doubt that Horse ExpoPomona wouldn’t absolutely rock. And it did. We’re alreadyplanning for next year — we’re taking our vitamins andthrowing ideas on the board. It’s All Maureen’s FaultBy Michele Knowles

I met Maureen Davis several years ago. As we got acquainted Mau-reen learned that I used to teach Mathematics, and I learned thatMaureen owned a horse. She learned that I love to read and Ilearned that her horse was a Peruvian Paso. I told her that my bestfriend was in Peru for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, shetold me about an Open House at Hacienda Sosegado and JorgeValenzuela Training Center in Hemet.

My husband and I attended the Open House. He thought we wouldstay an hour or two, I insisted we stay all day. Those beautifulhorses mesmerized me. One short ride on RSV Noble Sol and I washooked. Joy Gould answered my endless questions and Jorge de-serves sainthood for taking on the task of converting a Scottishdancing Math teacher into a competent rider.

After about six months, when it was very apparent that I was not los-ing interest or enthusiasm, I was asked if I might want to have my

own horse. I replied that I was planning to ask Santa. Alas, Santa stillhas not figured out how to get a horse down a chimney.

As I continued with lessons I became determined to have my ownhorse. I knew exactly what I wanted, but Noble Sol was out of reach.Jorge told me about a gelding he was training. I tried to resist, but itwas love at first sight when I saw MLM Gracioso. An incredible baygelding, Gracioso is finishing up his training like the champion he willsurely become. As for me, I doubt that I will ever be finished training, but I look forward to many years of riding Gracioso.

What an unexpected joy: from lessons to trail rides, from shows toshowing, making new friends with more still to be met, I thank you,Maureen!!!

Just How Ancient is the Peruvian Paso Breed?July 28, 2011We know from reading Dr. Deb Bennett’s seminal work“Conquerors, The Roots of New World Horsemanship” that thefirst horses were brought to Peru in 1531 AD by Francisco Pizarroand Hernando De Soto during the Spanish conquest of Peru. Those first horses were brought from Spanish stud farms in Pa-nama and Nicaragua. The early Peruvian horses were importedprimarily from the Province of Andalusia and were primarily ofAndalusian, Spanish Jennet and African Barb blood lines. Thehorses thrived in Peru and over the centuries their breeders havebeen careful to preserve their inherent qualities, especially theirambling gait.

Almost five hundred years is a pretty old breed. However, horseshave been domesticated much longer than that. In May of thisyear Becky and I traveled to Greece to celebrate our 20th wed-ding anniversary. There we visited Olympia, the site of thefirst Olympic Games held in 776 BC. In fact those games were

held continuouslyevery four years atOlympia for over1000 years. Thegames there wereended in 393 AD byImperial decree ofTheodosius I, theemperor of Byzan-tium.

At some point inthe history of thegames at Olympia horse racing and chariot racing were added ascontests. It was common for the winner of an event to celebratehis victory by commissioning a commemorative statue or figurine

and offering it for display at Olympia. One such bronzefigurine has survived the millennium and is now on dis-play at the Museum of Olympia. This figurine is onehorse of a four horse chariot team which was cast inbronze. While at the Museum, I took several pictures ofthis now famous little bronze. The figurine is now simplyknown as “The Horse of Olympia”. Once I returned homeit seemed to me that there were certain features of thisartist’s stylized rendition of this chariot horse which re-minded me of our own Peruvian Paso horses, especiallyWF Prodigio. So Kaitlin Kaiser and I took pictures of WFProdigio and they are presented here along with the cor-responding pictures I took of the “Horse of Olympia” foryour consideration. See what you think. The “Horse ofOlympia” is dated by the Museum as 470 BC, nearly2,500 years ago! Now that is truly ancient!!

A Remembrance ~~Mark Marcum, a name that is synonymous with PeruvianPaso Horses, for me, anyway. I bought my very firstPeruvian from Mark, many years ago. She was afrightened, yearling, chestnut filly, who had traveled withher mother from someplace in the Midwest to California. We were fresh into horses, and had decided feeding aPeruvian was the same expense as any other breed. So,why not make it one of these wondrous animals? At least, that was my husband's logic.

When we arrived at the Marcum ranch, we got the grandtour. We saw many horses that are only names in astudbook, these days. Then, we were shown this littlechestnut, with a crooked strip of white down her face. And, of course, I was in love. Didn't matter that she wasgoing to take enormous amounts of time and energy be-fore I would ever ride her.

We returned the following weekend with a rented horsetrailer. (Like I said, we were fresh into this project.) I willnever forget this day, but not for what might seem themost obvious of reasons. What I remember, in great de-tail, is the time it took to "talk" that filly into that strangetrailer. Mark must have spent more than an hour, justtalking to her. There was no pressure, no bad experi-ence, just gentle persuading. Eventually, she did get intothe trailer. And, for her entire lifetime, trailers were nevera problem for her.

I only met Mark a few times after that visit.I would see him at the shows, where wewere just spectators, for many years. Healways remembered us, and was friendlyand encouraging for this newcomer to thebreed.

RIP, Mark Marcum(submitted by Debbie Pye)

Hacienda Sosegado PlayDay Show & Clinic Weekend,Our 6th Annual Event

Even though we had to postpone the event to Easter weekend, we had anamazing turn-out. If we had to guess, we’d say there were better than 90 peo-ple here on Saturday. Great weather, good food, a good spirit of competition, and being with our horses. Who could define it better? There were 26 ridersand even more horses than that this year. The juniors were awesome andshowed many of the adults how it is done. We had a whole new group of nov-ices who had their first show experience. Our Judge Marco Dapelo made surethat every rider received feedback on their accomplishments. He made thewhole weekend fun and full of learning opportunities. We had a tremendousnumber of people at the ranch to observe and support.

Again this year, our event was catered by Rustico Ristorante and Pizzarea ofMurrieta. The food was wonderful as usual and luckily at the last minute weadded additional lunches because we had standing room only for lunch.

We had three special awards to distribute at the end of the show: Most Im-proved Rider went to Patti Sue Billings, Best Sportsmanship went to EmilySnyder, and High Point Rider for the day was Julia Mann. The juniors sweptthe awards this year, as well they should have! They participated in manyclasses and rode very well. Several Paso Fino horses joined us again this yearand they took their fair share of awards, including first place in the trail class.Every first place rider received a bucket full of horse related gifts. We also hada stakes class, won by Carolyn Truskowski.

Putting on a show is a tremendous job with lots of things to consider. Lou andI could not have put on this weekend without the help of Susan Grossman,Clyde James, Darryl Thompson, Fiona Covelli, Jorge Valenzuela, and ourranch hands. We also want to thank Susan McMahan, Sean McMahan, PattiSue Billings, and Julia Mann for hiding the Easter Eggs for our Easter EggHunt. Our unofficial photographer for this event was Bill Pye who made aneffort to get individual photos of each rider. Thank you, Bill.

It was a fun filled weekendfor anyone wanting to spend itwith theirhorse. Wethank MarcoDapelo forjoining us andsharing hisperspective, experienceand knowl-edge of thePeruvianhorse.

National Trail Champion Extends NM Clinic ScheduleMark Bolender Adds a Second Three-Day Session for Horses andRiders to Conquer Challenges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMarch 5, 2012Contact: Barbara [email protected]

ALCALDE, NM – Three-time National Mountain Trail Grand Champion Mark Bo-lender is extending his initial New Mexico clinic schedule. Due to demand, the coun-try’s leading expert on Extreme and Mountain Trail riding added a second three-dayextreme trail clinic immediately following his original clinic dates of May 18-20 at LaEstancia Alegre, an Alcalde ranch that breeds champion Peruvian horses. The secondsession will run May 21-23, also at La Estancia Alegre.

“I’m excited,” Bolender said. “I’m really looking forward to spending more time on thatfantastic trail course we’ve put in on the ranch and connecting with more horses andriders.”

Bolender, who has designed trail courses all over the world in addition to BolenderHorse Park in Silver Creek, Wash., recently visited La Estancia Alegre to check theprogress of the new trail course in the works. Water crossings, switchbacks, deadfall, boulders and multiple bridgeswill challenge clinic participants to trust their mounts and themselves.

“We’re thrilled that so many people want to come learn from Mark,” said BarbaraWindom, owner of La Estancia Alegre and clinic organizer. “I know everyone willreally enjoy Mark’s insights, his sense of humor and his skill as a horseman.”

Bolender will also perform a bridleless extreme trail demo on his champion geldingCheckers at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 at La Estancia Alegre. The public is wel-comed to come out and enjoy the preview of the clinic, wine and cheese.

Over the course of the three-day clinic, Bolender willteach 10 riders and numerous auditors how to first estab-lish leadership with their horses, then encourage thosehorses to think their way through the challenges of thecourse rather than reacting with instinct.

“Most horses operate on instinct,” Bolender said. “Instinct will determine whether you as a handler orrider are worthy of a leadership role. Then they’ll use their intelligence to figure out what you want.”

The subtle difference between instinct and intelligence directly affects a rider’s success over obstacles,Bolender said.

“If you come up to a scary object, instead of trying to cross the scary object, the horse will come into you(for direction)” he said.

Every year La Estancia Alegre, a premier breeding facility for smooth-gaitedPeruvian horses, offers a clinic that typically draws riders and horses from thatbreed. Riders from across the country have signed up for a chance to test theirskills on the new course.

“(Clinic participants) are going to have fun,” Bolender said. “They will learnboldness and confidence, but we want them to realize they’ll have fun.”

Rider spaces are currently filled, but you can register to audit and ask for aspot on the waiting list. There’s no limit on auditors. A single day audit is $50;all three days costs $125, breakfast and lunch included. For more information, sign up online or call Windom at 505-852-0444. To view photos of the trailcourse, visit La Estancia Alegre’s Facebook page.
