LAPIDNewsletter of Congregation Agudas Achim
PRESIDENT DAVE PHILIPS’ MESSAGE RABBI MITCH LEVINE’S MESSAGE“There is the person who sings the song of their own soul…there is the one who sings the song of his people…there is one whose soul expands until it spreads beyond the limits of Israel and sings the song of humanity…there is one who goes even higher until his soul joins with all existence, with all creatures…and he sings with them.”
– Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), 1st Ashkenazic chief rabbi of the British Palestine mandate
Among the tensions inherent in spiritual life is how to appropriately balance the sometimes competing commitments to self, one’s community and to the world. For Rabbi Kook, it seemed natural that one would look after one’s own people until one’s soul might expand to include all humanity. For others, putting humanity first is a basic condition of being humane; “singing the song” of one’s people may strike a disagreeably sour note.
This tension manifests itself politically in the controversy over identity politics. Is the way forward to appeal to commonalities or is “commonality” a chimera which clouds enduring and important differences of perspective and experience?
A challenge for modern Judaism is how do we strengthen Jewish solidarity without seeming petty and insular? Can we commit to something greater than our own group’s interest while remaining proud and affirming of a Jewishness which is separate and distinct?
Hillel the sage said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I?” proving that questions posed 2000 years ago still resonate. Contemplation is insufficient. Added the sage, “If not now, when?”
B’vracha (with blessings),
Rabbi Mitch Levine
March/April/May/June 2017 Adar/Nisan/Iyar/Sivan 5777 Spring Newsletter
In the last issue of the Lapid, I told you to expect recommendations coming out of our Strategic Planning initiative which would lead to exciting changes. Before diving into those recommendations, let me first sincerely thank the 30+ members of the Strategic Planning taskforces who provided their time and insights throughout the process - Todah Rabah!
On December 21, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the following
Mission and Vision, as developed collaboratively by the Strategic Planning taskforces, taking into account our congregation’s core values (traditional, egalitarian, friendly, participatory) and the input we received from you at our last annual meeting.
Mission: Agudas Achim creates opportunities for you to participate in a fun-loving, child-friendly, egalitarian and caring Jewish community. Shabbat is our “beating heart,” when you will experience us at our best.
Vision:
• To make our community even more close-knit, authentic and inspiring by constantly exploring different ways our members can connect to Shabbat.
• To be a community learning together about our Jewish tradition. Our Shabbat learning program sets the table for engagement and seeks to become the leading Columbus congregation for Shabbat-focused education.
• To identify, develop and sustain leadership that is creative, committed and collaborative to guide our congregation into the future.
• To ensure financial stability for generations by creating a community of givers who take ownership for the mission of Agudas Achim.
• To respond to the needs of the greater Jewish community and the non-Jewish world.
One of the first questions usually asked is about the emphasis on Shabbat. The focus here is not on personal choices regarding one’s Shabbat observance, but rather on recognizing that Shabbat at Agudas Achim is a special time when we come together as a community. We are seeking to build on the vibrancy of Shabbat at Agudas to meet the growing educational and spiritual needs of our members. If your child will be having a bar/bat mitzvah in the coming years, isn’t Shabbat the best time for them to be preparing for that special day?

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEIn the ABC sitcom “Speechless”, Maya DiMeo is a mother who is willing to do anything for her family. Her 16-year-old son, JJ, has cerebral palsy and she will fight for justice in order to give him what he deserves. JJ’s new school in a posh community breaks its arm patting itself on the back for their inclusivity, which isn’t always as benevolent as they would like to believe. In the pilot episode, JJ arrives at the school’s front entrance only to discover that he has to enter the building through a back door
via a wheelchair ramp that doubles as the dumpster route. When Maya expresses her disdain, the principal responds, “It’s an acceptable alternate access.” Maya responds by asking her if she feels that JJ is trash or a person.
Unfortunately, historically Jews with disabilities have had similar negative experiences in synagogues, simply because they either can’t get in or can’t easily maneuver around the building. Generally the reason given is that it is complicated and expensive to make the appropriate building modifications.
In many ways Agudas Achim has been ahead of the curve in regard to accessibility.
• Both primary entrances to the building (Broad St. and the parking lot) are wheelchair accessible
• Elevator access to the second floor classrooms
• Rest rooms off the atrium have accessible stalls
• 5 reserved parking spaces
• 2 spare wheelchairs available in the event that walking our long hallways are too much of a burden for infirm individuals
And by the time you are reading this article, construction should be complete on a permanent ramp leading onto the bima in the main sanctuary. During the early planning stages for this ramp, it was suggested that perhaps it would be easier and less costly to create a “back door” to the bima from the hallway behind. However as opposed to the principal’s response in the TV show, we unanimously agreed that a back door would not be acceptable alternate access. Everyone deserves the respect and dignity of ascending to our bima from the congregation.
On a related note, the Agudas Achim Board of Trustees recently amended our Core Value statement related to being an egalitarian congregation. It now reads…
Egalitarian: Supporting and encouraging our members, in all their diversity, to participate fully in synagogue life.
With that in mind, on the Shabbat of April 1 we will be hosting noted inclusion consultant Matan Koch as scholar-in-residence. His topic will be “Igniting a Fire for Universal Inclusion.” What does it mean to be inclusive? Why do we include? Who do we include? How do we include? I hope that you will join us as we explore together the next steps of an inclusion journey at Agudas Achim.

AGUDAS ACHIM’S CORE VALUESApproved by the Board of Trustees – August 18, 2015/Revised January 25, 2017
Agudas Achim aspires to be a traditional, egalitarian, friendly and participatory congregation.
Traditional – seeking meaning in Jewish tradition, and building on that tradition to create meaning for ourselves. Our members are inspired by traditions that connect us with our congregation’s history and with other Jews around the world.
Egalitarian – Supporting and encouraging our members, in all their diversity, to participate fully in synagogue life.
Friendly – welcoming each person who first appears before us, whether a traveler at morning minyan, non-Jewish family members, a homelessperson at kiddush, etc. We are a warm, close-knit, child-friendly community.
Participatory – engaging members so every member contributes, everyone is needed and everyone feels valued. We recognize our differences create opportunities for, rather than barriers to participation.

On Shabbat afternoons, congregants meet at Agudas Achim for Woodchoppers Talmud Study. Why is it called Woodchoppers?
“Among religious Jews, Talmudic scholars are regarded with the same awe and respect with which secular society regards Nobel laureates. Yet throughout Jewish history, study of the Mishna and Talmud was hardly restricted to an intellectual elite. An old book saved from the millions burned by the Nazis, and now housed at the YIVO library in New York, bears the stamp THE SOCIETY OF WOODCHOPPERS FOR THE STUDY OF MISHNA IN BERDITCHEV. That the men who chopped wood in Berditchev, an arduous job that required no literacy, met regularly to study Jewish law demonstrates the ongoing pervasiveness of study of the Oral Law in the Jewish community.”
– Joseph Telushkin
Knowledge of Hebrew/Aramaic is not required and new participants are always welcome to join. Call the synagogue office for specific meeting times and to be added to the special email list, and feel free to speak with Rabbi Levine if you have any questions.

FAST OF THE FIRSTBORN & SIYYUM – MONDAY, APRIL 10Morning Minyan at 7:00 am; 7:45 am for the Siyyum
Following the siyyum, there will be a festive morning breakfast. Although all are welcome, RSVPs are greatly appreciated.
Call Beverly in the shul office at 614-237-2747 ext. 14.
Historical note: A firstborn male traditionally observes this daytime fast on the eve of Pesach, recognizing that in Egypt the firstborn of Israel were saved from the tenth plague. The siyyum removes the obligations to fast from those attending, by hearing the completion of a tractate.
SATURDAY, APRIL 1:
SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE
MATAN KOCHMatan A. Koch’s lifelong history of disability advocacy began at age four with a presentation to several hundred young people, continued with a term as the president of Yale University's student disabilities community, and reached its most recent high point with his appointment by President Barack Obama to the National Council on Disability, for a term which concluded in 2014.
Shabbat morning D’var Torah – “A Conversation on Universal Inclusion” What does it mean to be inclusive? Why do we include? Who do we include? How do we include? We will hear some thoughts on these questions from Inclusion Consultant Matan Koch, and then explore together the next steps of an inclusion journey at Agudas Achim. Shabbat afternoon Woodchoppers Talmud Study (6:00 pm) – “The Jewish Roots of Inclusion: Were the Talmudic Rabbis Inclusive?” We often think of the idea of including those who are different as modern, a humanist interpretation overlaying our ancient tradition. In this study, we challenge that assumption, exploring a famous Rabbinic exchange which gives us precious insight into the way our sages thought about inclusion, and helps us
explore the sometimes artificial distinction between “Jewish” and “modern”.
Made possible by funding from the Rabbi Kalman London Scholar in Residence Fund of the Columbus Jewish Foundation.

Mia attended Kadima Day School in Los Angeles before moving to Columbus at the beginning of 6th grade. Mia is a lifelong lover of animals, spends her summers at Camp Ramah in California, shares a passion for cars with her Dad, and enjoys taking family road trip adventures all over the country. She received her Bat Mitzvah training from Dotan Herszage.
Mia is the great-granddaughter of Gladys Simon, great-niece of Howard and Andrea Suer, granddaughter of Ken & Judy Chasin and Mercy Romero. Mia wishes to honor the memory of her grandfather Fred Simon as well.
The Chasin and Simon families would love to welcome family, friends, the congregation and members of the community to join Mia on her special day for worship, followed by the Kiddush.

We thank Eran Rosenberg for his time and dedication for preparing Jacob for his Bar Mitzvah day.

He received his Bar Mitzvah training from Eran Rosenberg.
Ben is the older brother to his sister Lily Goodman and the grandson of Victor and Elaine Goodman and Alan & Dale Sprintz.
David, Heather, Lily and Ben invite family, friends and members of the congregation to worship with them and join them on this special occasion.
HAYDEN SPECTOR, daughter of Andrew & Ilana Spector, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 3, 2017. A 7th grader at Bexley Middle School, Hayden enjoys playing the piano and flute, singing and dancing in the middle school musicals as well as with the BMS choir, and competing with her team, the Bexley Legocy, in the FLL robotics challenges. As a Girl Scout, Hayden has completed several mitzvah projects, including performing piano concerts for senior citizens and renovating the garden at Zusman Hospice. As a member of the BMS Service Club, she has raised money for Charity Newsies. She received
her training from Michal Adar.

Hayden and her family invite family, friends and members of the community to celebrate this special occasion with us.

YAHRZEITSMARCH/APRIL/MAY/JUNE
During the week, evening services are scheduled only when it coincides with a Yahrzeit on which a synagogue member has requested that they would like a Minyan to recite Mourner’s Kaddish for their loved one. This approach honors the correct Yahrzeit dates while affording members the opportunity to attend Minyan specifically when their presence is most crucial to enable a fellow community member to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. Observers would attend Minyan the evening prior to the Yahrzeit dates listed below (following the Jewish lunar calendar) and/or on the morning of the Yahrzeit. Please note that this list reflects only yahrzeits for parents, spouses, children and siblings. The dates for evening Yahrzeit minyans are sent out weekly via e-mail and included in the weekly Shabbat Bulletin distributed in shul.
If you have any questions, please call Beverly at the synagogue office at 614-237-2747 ext. 14.

JEWISH LUNCH CLUB (JLC) Jewish students from Bexley Middle School (7th & 8th graders) join together once a month for topical conversation about the Torah portion, Jewish holidays, current events and/or thoughts that are on the students’ minds. Occasionally they are visited by special guests! During their monthly discussions, the students also enjoy pizza and chips. JLC is facilitated by Stacy Abroms Bandler.
Spring 2017 dates are: March 7, April 4 and May 2
March is sponsored by Brent and Dana Adler in appreciation of youth group advisors everywhere!
In order to sustain this program – which provides a kosher lunch and Jewish programming throughout the school year at Bexley Middle School – we count on your support. Sponsorships are gratefully accepted. You do not need to be a 7th or 8th grade parent/grandparent to sponsor!
FULL JLC sponsorship is $175. Donations in any amount are accepted. Sponsors and donors will be recognized in the weekly synagogue email.
To sponsor a JLC, email [email protected] or call Naomi at 614-237-2747 ext. 17.
GRADUATION KIDDUSH Do you have a graduate in your family/home? We’d like to celebrate them with a special graduation Kiddush on June 10! From preschool to medical and law school – Mazel Tov to your graduate!
You may co-sponsor the Graduation Kiddush for $36 per graduate. Please call Beverly in the front office at 614-237-2747 or email [email protected].
We look forward to celebrating with you!
Shabbat is also when many new and prospective members experience our community for the first time. Continuing to put our best foot forward on Shabbat makes sense. If you haven’t participated in a Shabbat morning service at Agudas for a while, I encourage you to do so — you never know — you might just get hooked!
In the coming months and beyond, we will be moving from vision to reality by focusing the Board’s energy on the specific strategies that will help us to achieve our Mission and Vision. An example of one step we are taking to achieve our vision of building a community of givers is the addition of a beautiful new “Bonim B’Yachad” (Building Together) Donor Wall in the atrium. This Donor Wall will recognize the members of the newly created “Bonim Society” of Agudas Achim — those who are committed to donating significantly more each year than standard dues. The support of our Bonim Society members is vital to the financial stability of our Congregation going forward. We want and need your help to make the above visions become real, either by joining the Bonim Society or by working on any of our other areas of focus (Shabbat programming, education, initiatives targeting greater
community, etc). Please let me know how you are interested in helping, either when you see me around or by sending me an email at [email protected]. More details will be shared at our annual meeting in June.
Kudos again to all who were involved in this Strategic Planning effort. I would especially like to thank the chairs of each of the taskforces — Kenny Steinman (mission/vision), Stephanie Wapner (education), Barbara Sanderow (leadership), and Randy Sokol (financial stability) — your leadership and dedication were vital to this initiative meeting its challenging goals, and you all came through and delivered with excellence. In addition, Rabbi Levine, Executive Director Ari Goldberg, and our USCJ consultant Bob Leventhal were all instrumental in providing strategic guidance and support every step of the way. And finally, Vice President Eugenia Erlij has led the entire strategic planning effort from beginning to end with meticulousness and excellence second to none. We could not have done it without her at the helm! When you see Eugenia or any of the others, please thank them. We look forward to your participation in helping build the future of Agudas!
(Letter from the President, continued from page 1)
