Messages from the Board Greetings, Welcome to the start of a new Chapter year! I hope this finds everyone happy, healthy, and enjoying a reprieve from the summer heat. The new Board of Directors is energized and diligently working to build upon the success from last year and incorporate member feedback to make this another great program year. As always, our goal is to support and promote the IT control, governance, and audit professions of membership. Based on the annual membership survey and on the diverse geography of our membership we will strive to provide training opportunities in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. The Board developed a schedule of meeting dates, locations, and topics based on your feedback. This schedule will be posted on our Chapter’s website under the “Events – Calendar” page. Please note we will post additional topic/speaker information for program events and details regarding our first social/networking event as we finalize plans. In addition, based on feedback, some of our Chapter goals this year are:
To sponsor three one-day training seminars.
To host bi-monthly membership meetings/training sessions.
To offer certification study opportunities.
To reach out to members, students, and those in education.
To reach out to prospective members and the business/regulatory community.
Last year we updated the Chapter by-laws; creating five new Board positions. During the last election, we filled three of those new/additional positions! However, we still have two Board vacancies and always appreciate volunteers for program activities. Please contact any Board member or me if you are interested in volunteering at any level. Thanks for a great 2011-12 chapter year and we plan to make this one even better! Remember to check our website WMISACA and stay tuned for additional email/social media notifications. Sincerely, Timothy J. Kubu, CIA, CISA President – ISACA Western Michigan Chapter

Dear Members, June's Annual General Meeting (AGM) at MSUFCU’s new facility was a great success. Speaker Phil Yanick’s presentation on ‘FDIC IT Examinations’ was beneficial to both individuals in the banking industry and to individuals in other industries and provided insight to the processes and methodologies of examinations, scopes, and obstacles. Phil's dynamic speaking kept the audience engaged during his presentation. WMISACA received positive feedback from attendees on Phil’s presentation; including satisfaction of the topic, delivery, and on Phil’s knowledge and expertise. Thank you Phil and thanks to all of you that attended!

Also, congratulations to Steve Schneider who won the Apple I-PAD that was raffled off at the AGM. Through the course of the year, we will be holding various raffles at select Chapter meetings.

In July, I turned over Chapter Leadership to your new President Tim Kubu and the Chapter's new Board of Directors. As Past President, I am confident that your new board is comprised of great individuals that are working hard to strive for excellence. However, they need your and my support to ensure that we are meeting your needs as a chapter member. Please consider volunteering in any way you can, even if it is only to give your input to improve our Chapter. Thank you for making my term of office a Wonderful Experience. It was my honor to serve you as your President. Best Wishes! Bob Kern Past President

International
Topic Leaders Needed
ISACA is looking for volunteers to act as topic leaders in the Knowledge Center
Topic leaders are an important part of the key activities within the Knowledge Center. The IT community relies on the expertise of topic leaders to start conversations and respond to others with advice. Topic leaders spend an average of two hours per week on their topic and can earn up to 20 CPE credits per year for their participation.
If someone you know is interested in becoming a topic leader, have him/her review the
topic leaders’ responsibilities. To be considered as a topic leader, complete the application
and send it (with a résumé) to [email protected]
Call for Papers
Increase your visibility throughout the ISACA® international community by becoming an
event speaker. ISACA issues specific calls for papers for each educational event and
program.
Visit the Call for Papers page of the ISACA web site to learn more about upcoming speaking
opportunities, how to submit a proposal and additional ways to get involved. Questions

Midwestern Intergovernmental Audit Forum (MIAF)
The State of Michigan Office of the Auditor General (OAG) will be hosting the Midwestern
Intergovernmental Audit Forum (MIAF) at the Radisson Hotel Lansing at the Capitol on Tuesday
and Wednesday, September 25 & 26, 2012.
The Midwestern Intergovernmental Audit Forum is an association of members who head
federal, state, and local government audit organizations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The Midwestern Intergovernmental Audit Forum meets
biannually in one of the six states on a flexible rotation plan. Meetings are generally hosted by a
state audit organization. The main objective of these Forum meetings is the exchange
information and ideas about auditing and related financial management topics among
members, their representatives, and other interested professionals from public accounting,
consulting, and financial organizations, and from academia. There are about 30 Forum member
organizations (i.e., organizations whose principal role is the performance of governmental
audits); however, there are many other individuals who regularly attend forum meetings,
wanting to establish communication channels and obtain updates on auditing activities.
The 2012 Forum agenda is currently in development and will be shared on the MIAF website
soon. See the MIAF website for on-line registration and further details as they become
available: http://www.auditforum.org/midwestern/mw_home.htm
Space will be limited so be sure to register as soon as registration is open.

Certification Information
Earn Free CPEs
The ISACA Mentorship program allows members to earn up to ten hours of CPE credit per year for mentoring activities. Would you be willing to share your passion and interest for the profession with others? We are looking for individuals who are willing to assist with Academic Relations, many of the activities will qualify as earned CPE. Some examples of opportunities to support Academic Relations:
Guest lecture to a class about your career pathway.
Provide mentorship individually to a student considering an IT/Audit career.
Offer a tour of your workplace to students.
Speak about the value of ISACA certification and ISACA membership.
Connect with your alma-mater to introduce ISACA programming. There are many more ways that we can advocate the ISACA mission and career pathways to our students. If you are interested in supporting any of the above ideas or have another way you would be willing to serve, please contact Dan Tuuri ([email protected] or 989-278-8450).

How to Write the Perfect Cover Letter
Your cover letter has only one job. It is meant to entice the reader to open and read your resume. Sounds simple, but job seekers often stress as much over their cover letter as they do the resume. If this sounds like you, relax, there is a simple approach to cover letters that will streamline your application process and give you confidence every time you send out your resume. Just keep these three cover letter tips in mind and you'll never stress over writing them again. 1. Keep it short. More often than not you'll send your cover letter via email or some other electronic system. Your reader won't be looking at a piece of paper, but at their computer screen. Ever notice how short your reading attention span is when you're reading text on your computer? That's why online articles are typically shorter than print articles. The same holds true for email messages. If you've got 60 messages in your inbox you don't have the patience for lengthy text. Now imagine you're a recruiter or resume screener and you must get through a couple hundred resumes in a day. If you want your cover letter read keep it short, concise and to the point. 2. Focus on qualifications. Most job seekers freeze up when writing cover letter because they don't know what information recruiters want to see. The first person in an organization to read your resume is a recruiter or HR professional who acts as a screener. They are interested only in identifying candidates who match their set of qualifications. The better the match the higher the interest. Don't worry about explaining why you are interested in the position, the screener probably doesn't care. He/she only want to know if you qualify as a viable candidate. Use the job posting as a guide to know exactly what qualifications to mention in your cover letter. 3. Don't try to get fancy. Job seekers get frustrated writing cover letters because they try to make it into a creative writing exercise. That's not necessary. It's much more important that you keep your ideas clear and easily understood. When writing about your qualifications do use the same verbiage to describe your skills as the job posting. You'll make the resume screener's work much easier and they will recognize you as a perfect candidate match much quicker.

Using this simple approach will allow you to take a customized approach with each cover letter you send. Generic cover letters usually sound canned no matter how much time was spent writing them. Worse, a one-size-fits all cover letter looks like it was borrowed off the page of a sample cover letter book. Would you take the time to read a mass-produced letter? I'm often asked if cover letters are still relevant in today's fast-paced job market. While the form has changed from paper to electronic they are still a vital part of your job-search marketing materials. Cover letters provide your first opportunity to make a good impression on your potential new employer. It pays to write them with clarity and simplicity. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
