Meet the New Boss: Manager Cesar Martín comes to the Midwest League following back-to-back excellent seasons in the Gulf Coast League, going 39-19 (.672 pct.) in 2015, and 39-17 (.696) last year. This is Martín’s ninth year as a manager, beginning with directing the DSL Blue Jays in 2007-2010 and 2012-2013. Alumni Report: 22 former Nuts are currently on MLB rosters, including two Opening Day starters, the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard (2011-12) and the A’s Kendall Graveman (2014-15). Bloodlines: Lansing is headlined by two teenagers whose fathers combined for 13 MLB All-Star Game nods, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (Vladimir Sr.) , and Bo Bichette (Dante Bichette). Both homered in their Lugnuts debuts on Friday in Midland, a 6-3 win. Third Best at Third Base: Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is MLB.com’s No. 3 third baseman in the Minor Leagues, trailing only Boston’s Rafael Devers and Cincinnati’s Nick Senzel. Rounding Up: The Lugnuts’ active roster features eight players who were drafted in either the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th rounds. That includes both of Toronto’s 2016 2nd-round picks, J.B. Woodman (57th overall) and Bo Bichette (66th). Outfielder Jake Thomas was drafted latest, taken in the 27th round. Welcome Back: Ten 2016 Lugnuts are on the active roster, specifically pitchers Geno Encina, Griffin Glaude, Dan Lietz, Justin Maese, Patrick Murphy, Tayler Saucedo and Kirby Snead, catcher Ryan Hissey and outfielders Jake Thomas and J.B. Woodman. Catcher Michael De La Cruz played in Lansing in 2015 before spending 2016 with A-Adv. Dunedin. Coach Chris Schaeffer was a Lugs catcher in 2012 and 2014. Welcome to the Show: Casey Lawrence, who pitched for the Lugs in 2010-11, made his MLB debut Saturday night for the Blue Jays, becoming the 119th Lugnut to reach the Majors. Today: The Eastern Division-leading Lansing Lugnuts play their second doubleheader of the year, a morning twinbill against the hometown Bowling Green Hot Rods. Right-hander Andy Ravel becomes the final member of the Lugnuts roster to make his 2017 debut, facing Bowling Green southpaw Kenny Rosenberg. One Lugnuts Win... would be their 1,485th win in team history, 15 away from 1500... set up a rubber match in this three-game series tomorrow morning... would give the Lugnuts their earliest time reaching five wins in a year since the 2012 team, which won seven straight games to start the season. Come On Down: Andy Ravel was selected out of Kent State University in the 7th round, 222nd overall last year, 12 picks after Hot Rods prospect J.D. Busfield.

Rave(l) Reviews: Andy first made his name at Wilson High School, playing summer and fall ball for the (Berks County) Grand Slam Blue Rocks, the nation’s No. 23 club baseball team. He was named a 2013 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American as a senior in addition to being honored All-Conference and All-State. His career record for the Wilson Bulldogs was 23-6.

Away From the Diamond: In addition to baseball, Ravel was a member of the Wilson football, golf and wrestling teams.

Par For the Course: Wilson H.S. is used to athletic excellence. Other Bulldog athletes include NFL players Chad Henne, Kerry Collins and John Gilmore Jr., Olympic speed skater Allison Baver, and Olympic field hockey star Katie Beach.

College Bound: Drafted in the 21st round by the Arizona Diamondbacks and facing offers from Penn State and Pittsburgh (where he would have pitched with 2016 Blue Jays 1st-rounder T.J. Zeuch), Ravel chose to matriculate at Kent State University. During his freshman year, he went 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 35.2 IP, follow-ing up with a 6-2, 3.13 ERA in 74.2 IP as a sophomore. In his final year, as a junior with the Golden Flashes, he earned Second Team All-MAC as the Saturday starter: 8-4, 3.36, 91.0 IP, 77 strikeouts, 20 walks. His best collegiate start, arguably, occured against Buffalo on May 7: a nine-inning shutout, featuring five hits, three walks, seven strikeouts, and zero earned runs.

Good Company: Andy shared KSU staff responsibilities with southpaw Eric Lauer, the Golden Flash’s Friday starter, who was drafted 25th overall by the San Diego Padres. Lauer made one appearance last year for the Fort Wayne TinCaps and is now currently pitching for A-Advanced Lake Elsinore in the California League.

Golden Flash Pride: Notable Kent State alumni in the MLB ranks include Al Oliver, Thurman Munson, Steve Stone, Dustin Hermanson, Andy Sonnanstine, Dirk Hayhurst, and Gene “Stick” Michael, who later managed both the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs before becoming Yankees general manager from 1991-1995

Welcome to Canada: Upon joining Class SS-A Vancouver, Andy Ravel was placed into a piggybacking role with fellow 2016 draftee Mike Ellenbest, with neither one pitching far beyond three innings. In his Minor League debut, June 26th, Ravel pitched three scoreless innings of relief, picking up the win in a 5-1 Vancou-ver Canadians victory. He made his first professional start six days later, allowing one run in three innings in a no-decision against Spokane. Andy’s final stats were skewed by his last two appearances of the year, giving up nine runs in 5 1/3 combined innings after allowing nine runs in his first 26 1/3 innings (3.08 ERA).

Serious Splits: Right-handed batters hit just .233 against Ravel in the Northwest League, with 17 hits in 73 at-bats. Left-handers batted .426, thanks to 23 hits in 54 at-bats.

Thou Shalt Not Steal: Right-hander or left-hander, no one found success running against Ravel. Eight base runners tried him. Seven of those eight were caught.

Personal: In his spare time, Andy enjoys golfing and listening to gospel music... his favorite baseball player is Robinson Cano... majored in Sports Administration at Kent State... his favorite TV shows are Friends and Prison Break.

Personal: In starting today, Andy Ravel becomes the final member of the 25-man roster to make his 2017 debut.

Draft Day: The Blue Jays selected Maese in the 3rd round in 2015, 91st overall in 2015. He was signed by scout Gerald Turner away from a commitment to to Texas Tech University, where he planned to study business.

Prospect Report: Nicknamed “Chief Sink,” Justin Maese is MLB.com’s No. 10 Jays prospect, the 5th-best pitch-ing prospect behind Sean Reid-Foley (2), Conner Greene (6), T.J. Zeuch (7) and Jon Harris (8). Baseball America considers him the No. 11 prospect in the Toronto system. MLB.com’s grades: fastball (60), slider (55), changeup (45), control (55).

A Sense of History: Maese attended Ysleta High School (pronounced “EES-letta”), the second oldest high school in El Paso. Ysleta’s history dates back to 1860, the oldest European settlement in the state of Texas.

Glory Days: Maese tossed 22 touchdowns as the quarterback for the Ysleta Indians, finishing with a 7-4 record during senior season. He finished his football career with 38 touchdowns and 5,328 passing yards and still says that football is what he misses the most. He, his older brother and his father all root for the Pittsburgh Steelers. (He didn’t root for a specific baseball team growing up, only Derek Jeter.)

Local Legend: Justin Maese’s uniform #14 was retired at Ysleta High School in both football and baseball. He learned of the honor in a surprise halftime ceremony during a 2015 football game.

Hit the Road: Maese’s passion outside of sports is for cars. After getting drafted, he purchased a Dodge Charger SRT and says that he could spend all day looking at it.

Family Pastime: Justin isn’t the only ballplayer in the Maese family. Both of his parents played in high school, his older brother played baseball in college, his older sister was on the softball team, and his two younger sisters are also softball players.

Acing Rookie Ball: In his pro debut, Maese dominated the Gulf Coast League to the tune of a 1.01 ERA and a 2.58 GO/AO ratio in eight appearances, four starts, working in tandem with Hansel Rodriguez (traded in mid-2016 to San Diego for Melvin Upton, Jr.). His best efforts included a rain-shortened 5-inning CG on July 29th vs. Braves, followed up by five hitless innings vs. Astros, August 5th.

Big Stage, Big Performance: Justin started the opening game of the 2015 Gulf Coast League postseason, August 30th, striking out a career high 10 batters in 6.0 IP: 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB in a 7-1 win over the Tigers, launching the Cesar Martín-managed Jays to the Gulf Coast League Championship Series. They were swept in two games by the GCL Red Sox, who were led by future Fort Wayne TinCaps Logan Allen and Anderson Espinoza.

Welcome to Canada: Maese continued to turn in gems with the Vancouver Canadians in 2016, delivering seven scoreless innings vs. Hillsboro, June 27th. In his final Northwest League start, he threw a career-high eight innings of three-hit, two-run ball, striking out five Tri-City Dust Devils. Of 101 batters faced with the C’s, he allowed just one home run and one walk and did not have a base runner attempt a steal against him.

Ouch: Promoted to the Lugnuts on July 17th, 2016, Maese drilled Burlington’s Michael Hermosillo with his first pitch. He gave up 10 hits in five innings in his next start, vs. Kane County, but only allowed one run. Then the right-hander settled in, allowing three earned runs or less in seven of his final eight starts, including 5.2 shutout IP, giving up two hits and striking out seven Lake County Captains in his final start, September 3rd.

Mr. Opening Day: Justin was the Opening Day starter in both 2016 for Vancouver and this season for Lansing. In his first start of 2017, Game 1 of a doubleheader, he walked a career high four batters, but received the win thanks to a Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning at Great Lakes.
