Some readers will be awarethat grants, loans, bursaries andother funding maybe available toassist you with financing youreducation. Often the rules andapplication processes arecomplex and confusing and inmany cases not generic. Thefollowing is a brief outline of someof the things that "may be"available to residents of theEuropean Community to helpfinance education. It is true to saythat in the main it is acombinationof the course, the course locationand the student that attracts thefunding but in the first instanceyou should obtain advice directlyfrom Educatours.

    University and HigherEducation

Going into higher educationcould be one of the most valuablethings you ever do, setting you upfor a greater choice of jobs, anda good chance of better pay.

There will be costs while yourethere. But to help you cover them,

theres lots of financial support onoffer.

EU nationalsAs an EU national, or a family

member of an EU national, youcan generally apply for financialhelp to cover the cost of tuitionfees when studying in England,Wales or Northern Ireland if:

you have been living within theEEA and Switzerland for thethree years immediately beforethe start of your courseyour main reason for being inthe EEA and Switzerland wasnot to receive fulltime educationIf you or your parent, guardian

or partner were temporarilyemployed outside the EEA andSwitzerland for all or part of thethreeyear period, you may stillqualify for help.

Student Loans and nonrepayable grants from thegovernment can cover yourtuition fees and help towardsliving expenses for fulltime

students. And a nonrepayablebursary from your university orcollege could put more money inyour pocket. Bursarys differ fromUniversity to University, so it iswise to check with us first.

Grants. A third of all newstudents are expected to receivethe full amount of MaintenanceGrant ( 2,835), while the furtherthird will receive a partial grant, depending on household income.

Bursaries On top of yourStudent Loans or nonrepayableMaintenance Grant, youruniversity or college will also offernonrepayable bursaries to a widerange of students.

Exactly whats on offer is up toyour university or college.Students paying the maximumtuition fee and receiving the fullnonrepayable maintenance grantare guaranteed to get at least

310 next year.In practice, you could get much

more than this in 2006/2007a typical bursary was around

1,000. And this was available toa wide range of students.

You only start repaying yourStudent Loans when youve leftuniversity and are earning over

15,000 and you dont have torepay Maintenance Grants andbursaries at all.

International students fromoutside of the EU and EEA are, inthe main. not eligible for UKstudent loans and grants. You willpay a higher fee than homestudents too, though this does notmean there is not any financialhelp. Many universties offer somescholarship awards to internationalstudents and in some extremecases, International students mayqualify for the same assistance asHome, EU and EEA students do. Itis best to ask advice first.

    Borrow & LendLevel Lower Intermediate

Try not to make the same mistake as many non-nativespeakers and ignore the word "borrow".If you need money from the bank to buy a house or a car, thenthe bank lends you the money in the form of a loan. The bankis the lender.

You, on the other hand, are borrowing the money you arethe borrower."I went to the bank to borrow 1 million but they only lentme 100!"

This also applies when you are sitting in the office and want touse someones pen.It is not, "Can I lend your pen?",It is "Can Iborrowyour pen?".

You can remember it like this:You borrow something from someone
