overviewInformation for students

What is Study Your WayWhen you participate in the Study Your Way programme you immerse yourself in New Zealand

culture, experiencing family and school life and you’re in control of the school and region you’ll

visit, the subjects you want to study and the adventures you want to have.

Study Your Way by AFS is all about YOU!

Why Go?• Achieve proficiency in a foreign language: While you can learn grammar and vocabulary in any English course, it is impossible to become truly proficient in a language without using it in a real-world day-to-day setting.

• Become a global citizen: Now, more than ever, our world is interconnected. To be successful – personally, intellectually and professionally – you must be skilled at interacting in and between multiple cultures and capable of analysing issues at a global level.

• Make life-long friends: You will be hosted by a family, meet other international students and participate in community life in New Zealand.

• Get out of your comfort zone: Study Your Way is a challenging adventure. Students who return from living overseas consistently report they have developed a greater sense of independence and confidence to take that next step.

• Work towards your dream job: Only 5% of the world population study abroad. Yet studying abroad provides highly sought after job skills, such as creative thinking, problem solving, flexibility, adaptability, motivation and leadership, teamwork, communication and an expanded world view with a multicultural perspective.

• Study Your Way – is your opportunity to study your way, by making the choices you know are right for your education, choices that will see you studying your way to a brighter future. We offer you complete flexibility in programme choice and lenght of stay.

Study Your Way is a once in a lifetime opportunity to:

• Kick start your future

• Learn about yourself and the world around you

• Make lifetime connection

• Challenge yourself in ways that you have never imagined

• Stand out in the job market

English Focus Programmes

General English

Our General Course offers students morning classroom lesson from 9 – 12 noon plus afternoon lessons from 1.15 – 2.45 pm, Monday to Thursday.

In afternoon classes students collaborate with each other and their teacher in choosing topics that interest them to motivate their learning

process. There is a strong outdoor Learning by Doing component where students regularly leave the classroom and visit places such as the

kindergarten, the rest home, museum, library, shops and businesses to interact with the people of Whitianga. In this way students develop their

social and language skills in real interactions with the friendly locals through interviews, reading and listening to stories, finding out information

and playing games. Real communication with native English speakers is the outcome and this is the key to successful language learning. There

are also regular visits to discover, for example, the town, beach and the harbour, and to learn about the local environment, history and character.

Some of the General Course themes chosen by students have included Driving Directions, Photography, Cooking, Beach Treasure Hunt, Puppet

Theatre, Marina Visit.

We also run exam specific courses for those of you who are gearing up to study in an English environment or who might want to certify your

Whitianga The school is situated a short two hour drive from Auckland city, on the Coromandel Peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of

New Zealand. The school is based in the small, safe seaside of Whitianga, a popular summer holiday destination. Students are often

surprised and delighted by how informal and friendly the local people are. Relaxing at the beach, watching the night sky, exploring the

bush and coastline are all part of students’ enjoyment of Whitianga.

What makes Whitianga a great place?

In the Coromandel Peninsula nature’s on your doorstep. From the surf beaches of Waihi and Whangamata, to the rivers and forests of

the top of the Peninsula, there’s a multitude of natural environments to explore.

Some of the activities you can enjoy here include heading to the ocean for swimming, surfing, fishing, water sports or coastal walks.

Going inland for bush walks, tramps and cycle/mountain bike trails. The Hauraki Rail Trail is an easy grade, scenic cycle and walking

track through beautiful Kauaeranga Valley. It’s a great way to safely enjoy New Zealand’s clean, green forest environment.

You are also able to explore our past. Learn about local Maori and pioneer history at museums in the nearby town of Thames, an old

mining town. Discover the development of mining, logging, railways and shipping that made the area what it is today.

And off course the Coromandel is also home to the famous Cathedral Cove, as secluded beach cave that features in many

advertisments of New Zealand if not the world. A must see!
