About the Adult Education Program

This volunteer-run program is offered to the entire ISB-Nichada Community by the Parent Teacher Auxiliary for the International School of Bangkok in Nichada Thani, Thailand. You do not have to be an ISB parent to sign up for courses – anyone can join. Funds raised from this program go directly to the ISB PTA, which uses the funds to enhance the educational experience of our students at ISB through financial grants and other directives. The continued support from teachers, students, and the ISB community is greatly appreciated.

● Online Registration opens at 7:00 am February 4th. ● Registration for the courses in this Program are on a "first come, first serve

basis". ● After submitting the registration form, you will receive an email which will

confirm if you are accepted into your chosen course. If you don’t receive the confirmation email, please contact the Adult Education Coordinator ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

● Registration closes at 3:00 pm on February 17th. ● Classes begin February 20th and are subject to a minimum number of

students enrolled depending on the course. If we are unable to meet this requirement you will be notified and your money refunded.

● Failure to pay for classes by Monday February 25th will result in cancellation of your registration and forfeiture of your spot in the class unless you have made other payment arrangements in advance.

● Any additional charges for materials are listed with the course and are to be paid directly to the teacher.

Beginner Chinese for AdultsIn this course you will learn basic knowledge of Mandarin, Pinyin and basic character traits. If your kids are learning Chinese at school, you will be able to follow along with them because what you will learn is similar to the Chinese ES beginner course at ISB. After finishing this introductory program you will be equipped to continue to study it by yourself.

Healthy Cooking with Chef Marla GrovesExplore the wide world of healthy cooking and eating in this fun and informative cooking class series with ISB Parent and Chef Marla Groves.

About the Instructor: Marla Groves has been cooking and baking since childhood. She studied baking and pastry at The Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, CA. After that, Marla operated her own cake, catering and cooking class business while living in Rome, Italy. After the birth of her second child, Marla was not feeling her best and was having difficulty losing the remaining baby weight she was carrying. She made a transition to a healthy eating and exercise program that she still does today (six years later). Marla lost 25 pounds and has kept it off for more than six years. DANCE & PHYSICAL FITNESS

Introduction to Pilates and TRXA wide variety of exercises are done on the reformer and with the TRX to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability. This is a full body workout with the main focus being on the lower back and core muscles. Class consists of 30 minutes TRX and 30 minutes Reformer.

Bollywood Dance for Absolute BeginnersBack to basics: this class is designed exclusively for absolute beginners in dance. You have always wanted to learn how to dance - but never quite got round to it. This class is for you.

Bollywood dance is fun, colorful, upbeat, and expressive. It combines various dance styles (such as jazz, hip-hop, salsa, merengue,lambada, bellydancing) with Indian traditional, folk and classical dance, and thus it is a delight for the beginner dancer, touching on everything.

While basic moves and steps from various styles are introduced, we will incorporate them in a captivating sequence and in the course of 5 weeks learn the choreography for a full Bollywood dance.

Design & Build WorkshopWould you like to build a personal project in the beautiful ISB Invention Center? This is your chance! Lot of materials, tools, equipment and a great professional guidance are waiting for you. The first part of this class will be to teach the materials, tools, and equipment in the Invention Center’s workshop. This includes materials such as woods, metals, plastics, electronics and tools such as saws, sanders, lathes, soldering irons, etc. In the second part of the class you will learn to design and plan your project ideas and finally build your own project with all the knowledge you have gained and the tools and materials you have chosen.

Watercolor Painting – Daytime OptionThis class is for beginners or for those who have some experiences in watercolor and want to practice and learn more techniques. We will learn how to control water, when to keep painting and/or when to pause and wait. We'll also learn how to see light and shadow and create depth in the painting. No previous artistic experience required.

About the Instructor: Wipha Risser was born in Thailand and had a great interest in art growing up, but didn't have an opportunity to study it formally until 2004, when she took watercolor classes at Rattanakosin University in Bangkok. There, she focused on painting scenes from rural Thailand. After moving to the United States, she studied at the Visual Arts Center in Summit, NJ, as well as studied drawing and oil painting at the Art Student's League and Janus Collaborative School of Arts in New York City. She was an associate member of Essex Water Color Club (EWWC) and of the American Watercolor Society. She received an award of excellence for a painting she entered in the EWCC show in February 2012 and Best in Show for another in 2013. Before moving back to Thailand last year, she offered private and group art classes for children in northern New Jersey.

Preserved flower arrangementPreserved flowers are real flowers that have been preserved through a process that enables the flowers to maintain their beauty and freshness for years without the need for water or sunlight.

In this class you will learn the basics of how to use preserved flowers to create an arrangement. You will also learn how to care for them to ensure their longevity. At the end of this class, you will have made your first preserved flower arrangement. Please note that making the actual preserved flower is beyond the scope of this lesson – we will be using flowers that have already been preserved.

In this class, you will be making a Japanese style springtime arrangement using a combination of artificial and preserved flowers. The arrangement will be built around the Japanese cherry blossom (Sakura) flowers.

About your instructor: Hiromi Coniglio has created numerous preserved flower arrangements over the past several years. She holds a license and diploma for teaching, creating, and selling preserved flower arrangementfrom FEJ (Flower Education Japan).

Beginner Weaving on a LoomLearn the basics of making one-of-a-kind woven tapestries with Tara Visani. Have you ever seen those beautiful woven wall tapestries in modern colors and cool textures dripping with fringe and fluffy clouds of soft wool on Pinterest and thought, I need one of those? Well this class if for you. You will learn the basic weft and warp weaving method and graduate to more fun and funky knots and color-blocking shapes to create your own one of a kind masterpiece. Weaving is a centuries old tradition that people across the world in every culture still use today to produce handmade carpets, tapestries, clothing and many other practical uses. In the last several years, there has been a new wave of modern fiber artists and weavers who have given this timeless craft a newfound popularity with fresh new designs, colors and techniques. After 5 weeks you will have produced your own wall hangings and with the knowledge gained, learn how to take your weaving to the next level.

About the Instructor: Growing up, Tara Visani watched her father make Tibetan tents and carpets in his factory by using traditional methods of hand dyeing yarn from vegetables and herbs, and weaving on massive looms intricate and beautiful motifs. No doubt this early inspiration set her on a life-long love of art and all things handmade. She studied fashion design and art, later becoming a jewelry artist using textiles and antique beads. Over the years of traveling and living abroad she finds herself still finding inspiration in woven textiles whether worn by indigenous people or made modern by a mix of old and new patterns in home decor and fashion. Although weaving is a new passion of hers, it is something she is excited to explore and learn more the possibilities it can provide.

Jewelry Making with LeatherLeather (or PVC) jewelry - custom cuffs, earrings or pendants can be designed and made in one class. You will use a machine to design and cut your leather to your specifications. Then you will add embellishments such as beads or color to your finished piece. Limited to 3 students at a time.

About the Instructor: Tara Visani has always had a passion for art. In college she studied fashion design and art. In her early twenties she started selling her handmade jewelry creations at local weekend markets as a hobby. Later she studied silver-smith and precious metal clay at an art studio in Northern Virginia and began selling online through her own website focusing on custom pieces using silver with pearls and gemstones. After moving abroad, she commissioned local artisans in Indonesia to produce her pieces and focused more on the design & production process. Her interests also spanned into home furnishings and handbags and began making leather and canvas totes alongside her jewelry. She continued to sell online and locally at bazaars. Over the years, she has taught jewelry making to adults and kids and slowly began to focus only on making commissioned pieces for customers. Today, she continues to expand her portfolio into fiber arts and enjoys finding ways to utilize her talents in search of new and emerging ways to create art, home furnishings and jewelry.

Jewelry Design - "Open Studio"Using my tools, machines, accessories, my beads (available for purchase) or your old jewelry you will be guided on how to create new pieces. Maybe you have pieces you want to fix or update, this is a perfect opportunity to do just that. This is also a great class for anyone who has the basic fundamentals of jewelry making to learn new techniques on how to create more professional looking jewelry. Limited to 3 students at a time.

Home Décor - How to Guild Anything Add a touch of gold to anything you can imagine from glass to fabric with a modern up to date look. Do you have a shell collection laying around, some outdated picture frames, wine glasses, wooden candle sticks...any of these items can go from drab to fab with just a few brush strokes. You will bring your own personal items to the class and learn how to transform your pieces so you can continue on your own pace at any time.

It can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. The materials might change, but the effect remains the same. In this class you will have all the tools and know-how to create and finish your own piece.

Choral Union: ISB Community ChorusJoin Andy Marshall and Matt Enders on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00pm as they lead the first rehearsal of the second semester for the ISB Community Chorus, Choral Union. We welcome back our singers from past semesters, as well as any brand new singers! This season's concert is TBA for the middle to end of May.

About the Instructors: Andy Marshall is in his 4th year teaching MS and HS choir at ISB. He was previously teaching and working as a HS choir director and Music director of a large church program in Bellingham Washington. He holds a BA in music and Masters in Teaching. He is a Published composer and has years of performing experience singing and recording with vocal groups in the United States. He most recently was asked to guest conduct Silpakorn University Orchestra and the Bangkok Music Society for their performance of the Mozart Requiem.He was most recently asked to guest conduct the Association of Music in International Schools (AMIS) MS Boys Honor choir in Bombay India this year.

Matt Enders has worked at the International School of Bangkok for two years as an ES general music teacher, musical director and choir director. He has a BA in music education and an MA in curriculum. He is also certified in Orff, and is working on his third level of Kodaly training. As a music teacher, he has directed, accompanied and coordinated multiple choral ensembles around the world. Over the last 17 years, he has taught in Virginia, West Virginia, China and Thailand.
