groups, called LITERARY GENRES. Examples:

NonfictionNonfiction is a historically accurate story or

narrative. The information is all factual.Some examples of nonfiction:

FictionA story or narrative that is based on imagination or made up.Some examples of fiction:

Fiction is then broken into further categories. Science Fiction – set in the future with scientific/technological advances Realistic Fiction – a story that could actually happen Historical Fiction – stories that blend real historical events with fiction Fantasy – stories with strange, otherworldly characters, including magic Dystopian – typically set in the future after there has been a worldwide

disaster, people/society have changed/adapted into a new and often unsavory way of life

Fiction-NOVELSMost fictional books, are written in first or

third person.

Tells a longer story with many different conflicts and plot development.

Most chapter books are novels.

Fiction-SHORT STORIESShort stories are short COMPARED to novels.

Usually consists of only one main conflict that is resolved in some way.

Drama or PlaysCan be fictional or nonfiction

Only genre intended to be seen as opposed to being read

Can rhyme, doesn’t have to. Usually has some sort of pattern or rhythm.

Speaking

While we don’t think about, the art of speaking is something we need to practice!

In this class you will be expected to prepare and present speeches and projects in front of your classmates.

Don’t be nervous, you will be great!

We will write in all different ways. Some examples: 5 paragraph essays with prewriting and drafting.
