    Fort Langley 

    Fort Langley is notonly the Birthplaceof BC, it’s also

    home to Langley’s old-est churches.

    In the Fort, severalsmall white buildings

    with narrow steeplestestify to congregations’and missionaries’ effortsin the 1800s.

    St. Andrew’s Unitedin the Fort was foundedin the 1880s and is stillhome to a vibrant con-gregation.

    Since settlers startedto arrive in the mid-1800s, they broughtCatholic and Protestantchurches, withdenominations of differ-ent faiths following.

    A Good Friday trad-ition in Fort Langley

    is the Stations of theCross, an outdoorservice organized bythe churches of FortLangley, that annuallyattracts hundreds ofworshippers.

    Through meditation, prayer,song, and the carrying of a largewooden cross to stations pos-itioned around downtown FortLangley, worshipers reflect upon Jesus Christ’s final journey tothe cross.

    Each year, Wagner Hills – aChristian organization that offersresidential treatment and coun-selling to men who have alcoholand drug addictions – provides awagon that serves as a stage andsound system for the outdoorservice.

    Gateway of Hope

    South of the Village, someof Langley’s more prom-inent churches include St.

     Joseph’s Roman Catholic Churchin Langley City, Christian LifeAssembly on 56th Avenue, and

    St. Andrew’s Anglican onOld Yale Road.

    The Salvation Armyhas a community pres-ence at its Gateway ofHope homeless shelter onthe Langley Bypass.

    Langley is also home toBritish Columbia’s firstTemple of the Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter

    Day Saints (the Mormonfaith). It serves an estimated

    22,000 Latter-day Saintsin 91 congregationsthroughout B.C. andnorthern WashingtonState.

    As immigrants havearrived from variousparts of the world overthe years, old churcheshave adapted or newones sprung up to meettheir needs.

    Christian services canbe heard in German orKorean in Langley, and in

    recent years both a Sikhtemple and a Buddhisttemple have been estab-lished in Aldergrove.

    Many Langley churchesare involved in charitablework that takes them into

    the wider community.The annual Love Langley cam-

    paign involves several churchesincluding Brookswood Baptistand Southgate, and involves ran-dom acts of kindness throughoutthe community.
