Plans for a newhospice are in thepreliminary stages.

A new hospice facility forLangley is needed, but theprocess will take time.

Executive director of theLangley Hospice Society,

Nancy Panchuk, notedthe Maple Hill facility wasmeant to be temporary, despite housing the hospicefor 10 years now.

“Because of the age of thebuilding itself, it is no long-er meeting the highest levelsof Fraser Health standards,”she said.

Currently, the hospicesociety is working withthe end-of-life care teamat Fraser Health, as wellas the Fraser Health plan-ning department, LangleyMemorial Hospital, and thehospital’s foundation to

determine the best options.“Certainly our dream isa free-standing building,”Panchuk said. “A placethat feels like home, hasthe comforts of home, andwhere family can be withyou at all times.”

Panchuk noted Fraser Health’send-of-life care team is on boardwith the hospice’s vision. Shehopes the community will learnmore about the project this year.

On the same site as the hospice,

Langley Memorial Hospital, is alittle less than 70 years old, andhas been through a number ofchanges over the years.

The original cottage hospitalbuilt in 1948 has long since beenreplaced, and in 2015 LMH saw

43,813 emergency roomvisits, gave care to 11,268inpatients, and delivered1,451 newborns.

The maternity wing hada major upgrade in 2014when a $6.5 million pro-ject expanded the numberof beds to 20, and addedseven single-room mater-nity care spaces.

The new wingwas dubbed theVanderkerkhove FamilyMaternity Centre in hon-our of the family’s $1 mil-lion contribution.

Also on the site, thereare three residential careresidences in addition toMaple Hill (Cedar Hill,Marrwood, and Rosewood)which provide long-termcare for those unable tostay at home safely.

Residents can also turnto the local public healthunit at 20389 FraserHwy. for services such

as prenatal and post-natal services, childhoodimmunizations, outpatientnutrition counselling, earlychildhood developmentservices, hearing clinics, substance abuse programs

and other health-related services. The Public Health Unit is open

Monday to Friday and can bereached by phone at 604-539-2900.

There are also numerous doctorsoffices and several walk-in clinicsaround the community.
