  • Hannah Griffiths is a mosaic artist and painter; she makes bespoke mosaics for public and private clients. Trained as a fine art painter, most of her work is initially developed through painting and then she loves the process of transposing these designs into mosaics, which is a beautiful and tactile medium. Working with a variety of materials including glass and ceramic tesserae, gilded glass and broken china she has undertaken diverse commissions including wall art for colleges and hospitals. Numerous domestic commissions for floors, kitchens, tables, mirrors etc. have been inspired by diverse subject matter including African textiles, Moroccan pattern, Italian church floors, the crown jewels and red hot chilli peppers.

In 2012 Hannah created an exquisite egg Conchiglia for The Faberge Big Egg Hunt London. In 2011 she made a beautiful crocodile, Flora, for Jungle City Edinburgh, and in 2010 she made Figgy for Elephant Parade London.

In 2009 Hannah was honoured to be awarded a scholarship by QEST to attend the Master in Mosaic course at Orsoni in Venice. The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust was set up in 1990 by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to award scholarships to talented craftsmen and women. At Orsoni she learnt how to work with smalti mosaics, which are made from beautiful handmade enamelled glass and cut with a traditional hammer and hardie, in the oldest and most respected mosaic establishment.

Examples of Hannahs work can be seen on the QEST stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

  • Bonar introduces Duracover: the first completely biobased ground cover. Ground covers also known as weed control fabric have been common for years among those who work in the areas of landscaping, gardening, etc. The principle of the ground covers is simple: by minimising the light transmission, the germination and growth of weeds is also prevented. Woven ground covers also allow water to pass through, however, so the rain can get into the ground without problems.

Originally, these ground covers were made primarily out of polypropylene. For several years, though, the awareness has been growing that an alternative was needed. Plastics should be avoided in nature, where possible. Here and there, biodegradable alternatives did arise. In terms of ease of use, quality and effectiveness, however, those alternatives did not even get close to the traditional ground covers.

Researchers from the Bonar Research Center made a breakthrough with the invention of Duracover. Duracover is completely biobased, which is why it ea rned the highest 4-star certificate from AIB Vinotte. The researchers also succeeded in developing a ground cover with the same quality as the traditional BONAR ground covers: very user-friendly, almost completely opaque, well permeable, UV-resistant and very strong.

Bonar will be showing this innovative product at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Bonar TechnicalFabricsThe Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) was formed to try and raise and maintain standards in the industry and to help consumers make an informed choice in a market place that is susceptible to problems. Formed in 1995, the APL, which operates as a Specialist Group of the Horticultural Trades Association, represents landscapers who have met a required standard of professionalism. Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark Scheme and are annually inspected and agree to follow a customer charter with clients. All APL members also hold the appropriate insurance and have traded for a minimum of two years. The APL provides homeowners with an even greater choice when selecting a landscaper. As a customer, you can feel confident that the APL landscaper you have chosen has met prescribed professional standards. The APL have a close partnership with the RHS and are responsible for the Low Cost, High Impact gardens at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The category was introduced to the show for the first time last year providing APL members with an exclusive opportunity to showcase their work. The gardens showcase a practical approach which also provides a wow factor. The aim is that visitors will be able to recreate the garden design, based on a fixed budget for hard landscaping, plant material and labour. This Low Cost, High Impact concept has been so successful, it has also been rolled out to RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. The APL also host regular cluster group meetings around the country. These meetings offer members networking opportunities and sharing of ideas and best practice in the industry through the course of the year. The Association of Professional Landscapers also have designated website with an easy-to-use map of the UK to help you find a contractor near you. The APL is looking forward to being at LANDSCAPE again this year, which provides a great environment and opportunity to discuss with potential new members and consumers about the benefits of membership and of using an APL registered contractor. Why not come along and say hello.

Nidagravel is a gravel stabiliser product that has considerable benefits when used in conjunction with a traditional loose gravel finish. Thanks to nidagravel walking, cycling and wheeling a bicycle, wheelchair, pushchair or pram across gravel are no longer a problem. The gravel is laid in honeycombs which keep it in place and prevent it moving or migrating. Ugly ruts, puddles and potholes are a thing of the past.

nidagravel sheets are made from extruded polypropylene and have a hollow, hexagonal structure (honeycomb structure). These sheets are light in weight and pressure resistant and are intended to reinforce and stabilise areas covered with gravel and pebbles. They are highly resistant to aggressive products, micro-organisms and rodents and are also recyclable.

  • Fisher TomlinUK based garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin has been commissioned to design a show garden for the inaugural Australian Garden Show, Sydney in September 2013. The garden is created in collaboration with Tom Harfleet who Fisher Tomlin worked with to create a Gold Medal winning garden in New Zealand earlier this year.

Andrew said This is an amazing opportunity for us to showpiece UK design down under and is a natural extension of the success we have had taking our design ideas overseas. We were attracted by the new show because it aims to offer more than the traditional garden show with cutting edge design and horticulture but also an incredible night time experience not seen anywhere before.

The inspiration for the showpiece garden, called September Sky, comes from those spring skies when days become longer and the light becomes clearer, where colours are sharp, crisp and silver. The garden uses typical Australian natives from a perspective of the outsider to the country, a fresh eye in a contemporary setting where strong architectural forms engage with a much wilder planting.

Andrew added Light, fire and sound will be brought in to transform the landscape at night-time. Its the first time weve had a cocktail lounge right next to our show garden so were going to create something special for all those night time visitors.

The inaugural Australia Garden Show Sydney will open 5-8th September in the citys Centennial Park. The show is developed by Destination New South Wales on behalf of the New South Wales Government and will be the launch platform for the stunning series of floral and garden events taking place throughout the region from spring onwards.

  • This year, the LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park, will feature an Italian Pavilion. Flora Nord is just one of those companies taking part who represent a cooperative of ten companies from Northern Italy.

The companies within Flora Nord are all production nurseries and have recently made the decision to export directly.

The plants from this area are more cold resistant due to the harsh winters in Northern Italy and therefore more suitable for the UK.

The range offered by the cooperative include rare species of plants like Firmiana, Halesia, Nyssa, Syncopsis and Stewartia and above all you can find real specimen plants that are truly hard to find!

Flora Nord can organise the logistics so there is no minimum order per grower, and partial loads are possible. Do come along and speak to them at LANDSCAPE this September to see what is possible.

Each Gaze Burvill piece is made for comfort, beauty, lasting quality, and with a commitment to design integrity. The company has worked with many of the large public gardens in this country, and several overseas, to create seating, planters and terrace furniture for visitors, sometimes creating a new bespoke design, like the Border Seat project for the RHS at Wisley, and sometimes working from the established collections, for example some lakeside seating for Hyde Park, or a spiral bench provided for weary shoppers in Petersfield, for the local County Council.

Only certified timber from sustainable sources in Europe is used, and all the oak pieces are made by the companys craftsmen in the Hampshire workshop. • John Cullen Lighting are part of the Steering Committee for the LANDSCAPE show. Lucy Martin, their Design Director talked to us about one of the their recent projects.

She says The brief from the client was to create an inside/outside party space. Lighting was layered to produce dynamic effects across the split level garden. At high level light skims down the wooden terracing whilst accent lighting is added with spiked 1w LED Kew spotlights and Hampton flood lights to planting and to uplight the olive tree.

At low level 1w Oslo floor washers create a floating effect under the table and benches. To create the party feel, a panel was back lit with colour changing LED RGB Slinky strip which reflects colour throughout the garden. The water rill was lit from under the stone paving with an LED strip adding drama and interesting reflections. Additional colour changing LED strips create the illusion of the water rill extending towards the house and adds more colour and drama close to the house. As a final touch oversized pots were uplight and framed with 1w LED Sienas for a dramatic play on light and shadow.

All lighting is carefully selected to ensure full customer satisfaction, with initial product specifications being improved on to provide well made and reliable light fittings. • The Roof Gardens in Kensington has long been one of Londons most spectacular and extraordinary landmarks. Originally designed as an escape from London rather than a pedestal above it, The Roof Gardens comprises of three themed gardens spanning across 1.5 acres, a private members Club and Babylon Restaurant all 100ft above Kensington. This summer, The Gardens are celebrating their 75th Anniversary so there is plenty planned throughout the year to help commemorate such a special occasion!

No other location in London offers beautiful rooftop gardens with fully grown oaks and fruit trees, a flowing stream stocked with fish and wildlife and of course the resident flamingos.

The Roof Gardens has also introduced a mini meadow at the far end of the Babylon terrace which was inspired by the wider popular movement towards creating wildflower meadows that is occurring right across the UK.

Sir Richard Branson says It is fantastic to see The Gardens celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year. Everyone involved with The Roof Gardens should be very proud of what it has achieved; especially David Lewis and his team as the Gardens are a testament to their hard-work; they look absolutely stunning and really do allow visitors to feel like they are worlds away from the hustle and bustle of London.

  • At LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September will be a pavilion of exhibitors from France. One such exhibitor is Catriona McLean who represents many of the Frances best known potteries manufacturing classic handmade terracotta vases, oil jars, pots and sculptural pieces not to mention other decorative terracotta garden ornaments. For the LANDSCAPE Show Catriona has selected five of her best makers, with whom she has been collaborating not only on export sales but also on design and trends for more than 15 years. One of them, Ampholia, are based in Anduze. They are a small artisan atelier who make all their vases by hand, by using moulds and hand finishing with a particular and very distinctive antica glaze. Poterie Le Chene Vert is also based in Anduze and make a classic range of ornate glazed Anduze vases of all sizes. Hand thrown, or using moulds they are also now making very large contempory style vases using the rope method. Poterie Terre dAlbine is a family run pottery that makes fire bricks and roofing tiles classic Provencal style using their own terracotta clay from earthworks on their land near Toulouse. Atelier Ficat is a small artisan atelier near Toulouse. Trained in church sculptural renovation this stone mason has now developed his own range of exterior or interior sculptured pieces. Claude Destand started in St Jean de Fos in the Hrault, as a wine grower, like his father before him. He turned to also making traditional pottery from the region carefully and meticulously recreating the pottery designs made by the towns 17th century potteries. Richard Miers has been designing gardens for over 15 years, both in the UK and abroad, including a country garden for a grade 1 listed house in Norfolk, a 15 acre garden for a new build Palladian mansion in Surrey and numerous town gardens in London. Lauded as one of the top ten up and coming garden designers by House and Garden Magazine in February 2011 he was also invited to design a show garden for The Daily Telegraph/House and Garden Fair in 2007. Of which Susan Crewe, Editor of House & Garden, said of The Scented Garden: An inspired piece of design; so much of the moment, yet with its roots in a thousand years of horticultural history and tradition.

Despite being rooted in this time-honoured tradition, his gardens are clean and classically contemporary in style, with a strong sense of geometry. When designing, Richard likes to begin by putting structure into the garden, be it with hedges, walls, paths, terraces, water, trained fruit trees or an avenue of trees. These divide the garden into areas of manageable human scale, defining spaces and giving each area a purpose whilst providing shelter, varying points of interest and framed views; they also help hold the garden together through the winter months. This structure is then softened with bulbs, herbaceous flowers, shrubs and roses so that with the advent of spring & summer the excitement of the budding flowers adds a new, altogether softer dimension to the garden.

    Richard Miers

  • If there is a theme that runs through his work it is the curved hedging that winds its way though his herbaceous borders or stands out in sensuous baroque curves against lawn or gravel. Symmetry is also important, coupled with a sense of balance and proportion, resulting in gardens that are both harmonious and handsome. Design ethos: Good garden design is all about teamwork and communication. Translating ideas coherently to both client and contractor is key.

Richard was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the 2012 Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki Japan and is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.

Greenleaf are specialists in urban tree pit design. They are the UK market leaders for tree pit products that give trees in towns the best opportunity to thrive. Local authorities, landscape architects, engineers and other related professionals increasingly turn to Greenleaf for guidance and best practice advice in tree planting implementation. At LANDSCAPE this year Greenleaf will be showcasing a variety of these products including their recently relaunched Arborguy tree guying system. This patented design, unique to Greenleaf provides fast easy installation. Greenleaf will also be featuring their industry leading StataCell. Built to advanced engineering specifications to support greater vertical loads which brings tree-root systems closer to pavement surfaces. Engineers have calculated that with only 300mm of granular pavement depth, a StrataCell matrix can support maximum pedestrian and pavement traffic loads. With vertical and lateral forces also considered in the engineering make-up of tree pits, StrataCells well-designed matrix units lock together well, forming a monolithic framework with excellent modular strength. Make sure you visit Greenleaf to see the StrataCell in action! Visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September.

  • We recently spoke to Jonathan Denby who shared his thoughts about follies. He told us Ive always admired the way Victorians would build a Folly on their land, which had no other purpose than to look good and be admired. One such Victorian was Alexander Brogden, the owner of Holme Island in Grange who, when he had finished building the Furness railway, built a circular Temple of Vesta in his garden. I came across a photo of the temple while I was doing some research on Grange in the Barrow Records Office and was immediately captivated by it. I was told that there was no possible chance of the National Park planners giving me permission to build a modern folly, but, with the thought that the Victorians wouldnt have been daunted by such a detail, I drew up some plans and put them in. The doubters were wrong and the plans were passed, albeit with the unnecessarily sarcastic comment that it was more Las Vegas than Lake District. It has taken several years, but the building is now finished. I think its rather lovely. Ive called it The Rotunda. It isnt a folly as such but has a practical, and of course commercial purpose as a wedding chapel. A licence has been granted for couples to get married in the chapel, but they can also spend their wedding night there, as it can be magically transformed into a bridal suite. Theres a hidden bed, which comes down from a wall; a secret door to a concealed bathroom and a TV which drops down from the ceiling. You can lie on the bed and look at the stars through the glass domed roof. Perhaps the planners did have a point after all when they mentioned Las Vegas. • Sustainability, biodiversity, pollinating insects, ethical food production; all words that feature heavily in the press and on social networking sites at the moment; but how can we make the landscape industry more sustainable? This is the subject of a free event to be held on Q Lawns farm in Norfolk on 4th July 2013. Speakers include Wayne Grills, Chief Operations Officer at BALI and Tom Hart-Dyke, prominent plant hunter and creator of The World Garden in Kent. Tom Hart-Dyke is quite the adventurer. Having been kidnapped whilst on a plant hunting expedition and told by his captors to prepare to die, he design a World Garden that has since come to fruition in his back garden at Lullingstone Castle, near Sevenoaks in Kent. Tom is an entertaining speaker who puts forward a strong message about conservation through cultivation. The Q Lawns event will include a farm tour to reinforce the message that landscape supplies need to be ethically grown and produced with due consideration to the environment. Delegates will find out how drainage ditches, hedgerows, woodland and road verges are valued and managed at Q Lawns as well as having the chance to learn more about growing turf, Meadowmat and Enviromat. At the end of the day, Angela Lambert will reveal the new product from Q Lawns that will be officially launched at The LANDSCAPE Show this autumn. The event is free to attend, but booking is absolutely essential.

  • The London College of Garden Design has become the first garden design college to launch a special professional development day supporting their recent graduates. Director Andrew Fisher Tomlin said we were conscious that it is tough out there and we want our graduates to succeed in their new careers so we decided to offer them a free focussed days training to update them on the skills that really matter. The 2013 Graduate Inspiration Day will inspire new thinking and update professional business skills. As well as the College Directors graduates will benefit from specialist talks on engaging customers through social media and how to create a business that is bigger than just themselves. Fisher Tomlin added we always want to display the talents and achievements of our students and graduates and this new day is another way in which they get value for the investment that they have made with us. It is vital that our students succeed as it reflects on all we do for them. In recent years London College of Garden Design students have won more awards in the Society of Garden Designers Awards than any other college and in 2012 and 2013 students have reached the finals of the RHS Young Garden Designer of the Year competition. Many now work with some of the worlds leading designers such as Andy Sturgeon and Luciano Giubbelei.

  • In an age of franchise driven high streets and off the peg landscape solutions, the local, unique and historic are all too easily lost. Re-establishing a sense of place, history and local identity is a core need for our environments and site specific artworks offer a unique and high quality solution.

From small scale interventions such as QR code paviors to large landmark sculptures Gary Drostles work has been re-connecting communities with their environments by enhancing local identity and bringing hidden histories to light.

Award winning London based artist Gary Drostle creates site specific artworks for landscape and architecture. Specialising in wall and floor mosaics and mosaic sculptures Garys work brings colour and durability to the environment. His work uses natural stones, hand made Italian glass or tough ceramics to create these beautiful features, each one designed uniquely to reflect the character of the area. With over twenty-five years experience Gary has built an international reputation for his mosaic art and can create works in both traditional and modern styles, always with a strong emphasis on design. Developing ideas in collaboration with architects, landscape designers, local communities and local authorities Garys work can be seen in parks, town centres and public buildings across the UK and in the USA.

Gary will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September as part of the QEST demonstration area.
