In this month’s issue, we take a look at the new ‘Ausfahrt’ at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany. The service pavilion is offering guests an opportunity to try out vehicle technical systems in models manufactured by Volkswagen. See page 34 for more.

Over on page 32, we profile Desert Turfcare and discuss the new projects the company is undertaking as well as their thoughts on issues such as water conservation, and the challenges they face in the GCC market.

Valleycrest Design Group take us behind the scenes of their latest project – the renovation of Abu Dhabi Central Park – which is designed to be a community and family space. Turn to page 20.

We discover that dreams do come true on page 40, and look at how a Moorish house and garden was constructed in Marrakech, Morocco .

Until next time,

Kleindienst Group launched The Floating Seahorse, an aesthetically designed contemporary marine style product at The Dubai International Boat Show. The launch generated

a wealth of global interest because The Floating Seahorse is a totally unique concept which has been intelligently designed, engineered and developed in Dubai. The Floating Seahorse is essentially a boat not a villa and only 42 units have been launched in Dubai.

The iconic one of a kind product was officially unveiled at The Dubai International Boat Show and has since received a great deal of interest from media, clients and investors in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Maldives, Seychelles, The Caribbean, Sweden, Portugal and Norway to name but a few.

ANOTHER WORLD’S FIRST!

The floating Seahorse

CEO of Kleindienst Group, Josef Kleindienst comments “Since launching The Floating Seahorse we have been inundated with local, regional and international enquiries. We are excited to not just offer people a once in a lifetime investment opportunity in Dubai but on a global scale. The Floating Seahorse is not restricted to Dubai waters and can be designed and fabricated in Dubai for other resorts and destinations worldwide.”

The Floating Seahorse is a truly unique underwater product which is the first of its kind in the world. In real terms, The Floating Seahorse is a marine style retreat (essentially a boat without propulsion) which has its own plot in the Arabian Gulf. To be located only a short boat ride from the coast of Dubai, each individual Floating Seahorse will boast three levels, one underwater, one at sea level and an upper deck. The master bedroom and bathroom will be totally submerged underwater and will command breathtaking views of the surrounding coral reef and marine life! The sea level accommodation will boast floor to ceiling windows, uninterrupted sea views, a fully-fitted kitchen with a dining area, an open plan living area and when the glass façade opens the sun deck becomes an extension of the living space. The upper deck is the perfect place for alfresco dining and relaxation and features an informal bed, a mini bar, a kitchenette and a beautiful glass-bottomed

Jacuzzi. The deck can be converted into a winter bedroom which can be enclosed with retractable drapes. The Floating Seahorse has been designed and developed by leading European architects for Kleindienst Group’s iconic island project, located just 4km from the coast of Dubai.

CEO of Kleindienst Group, Josef Kleindienst adds “Many months of research, design and planning have gone into The Floating Seahorse and we are excited to be able to officially launch and build it in Dubai. We are confident that it will set a new benchmark in the luxury lifestyle market worldwide for outstanding innovation, contemporary design and underwater living at its best.”

Many dream about living close to marine life and underwater living and Kleindienst Group is thrilled to be making it a reality for the privileged few in the diverse and innovative city of Dubai. The estimated completion date for The Floating Seahorse is the end of 2016. For people wondering why this particular project is called The Floating Seahorse, Josef Kleindienst explains “The seahorse is an endangered species and we will create an artificial coral reef beneath the luxury retreats which will be a protected area in which seahorses can safely live and breed. Very soon, people will be able to see up-close and personal, the beautiful and elegant Arabian horse of the ocean - the seahorse!”

Johannes Laue and Christoffer Martens began their collaboration while studying industrial design. This spelled the beginning of Laue Martens Industrial Design, a

Berlin based design studio focused on the simple and light design principles of these two designers. They chanced upon origami as an apt design inspiration for urban street elements while working on a multitude of urban architecture projects.

The “Wing Bench” which has gained considerable attention in the MENA region for its iconic design is an elegant approach to seating arrangements in urban spaces. Its design is solely inspired by the art of origami : A wing-shaped base in multiple pleated steel sheet carries a seat made of solid wood planks. The result is a bench of great comfort and exceptional aesthetics.

To bring this bench to the MENA region, LAUE MARTENS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN teamed up with the region’s leading street furniture & urban design firm BLUE STREAM ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY LLC. As an authentic offering maintaining exacting quality standards and exceptional economical value - this partnership brings many of the ground breaking designs from the studio within the reach of projects and individual clients across the region.

Origami - a unique design inspiration for urban architecture

Blue Stream has worked on several street furniture packages for over 18 years with quintessentially design oriented clients across the GCC. Hardscape elements have come to define landscape architecture more than ever in the region and innovative designs like the ‘Wing Bench” showcase this development.

Soil

International Year of Soils (IYS) 2015 was declared by the 68th United Nations General Assembly. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has been nominated

to implement the IYS 2015, within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership and in collaboration with Governments and the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The scientists of the Dubai based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) represent UAE on Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and over the years have contributed to various activities of the GSP. In recognition to the importance of healthy soils for healthy life this article is dedicated to the IYS2015.

The IYS 2015 aims to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential

ecosystem functions including landscaping

Soil is made up of sand, silt and clay and has many different colours depending upon where you are on world soil globe. The most recognised soil function is the medium for plant growth. Plants and crops are dependent on soil for the supply of water and nutrients, anchorage of plants and as a medium in which to grow. Soil is a fundamental component of our landscape. Healthy and aesthetically looking good landscapes underpin soil properties on which these landscapes are established. Therefore it is essential to have healthy soils under the landscapes to ensure sustainable use and development of any landscape. Maintenance of landscapes to have environmental services and to provide clean and healthy environment to the residents is a real challenge, as many landscapes are threatened to biotic and abiotic factors like salinity, erosion, hot environment, contamination etc.

The planet earth is shrinking for soil servicesDue to increasing population growth, unsustainable land uses, desertification, urbanisation and biofuel production the arable lands are shrinking and land specifically available to us per capita is continually dropping. Currently, each human being has only 0.22 hectare to his or her disposal; in 1960, that figure was 0.5 hectare. In addition 24 billion tons of fertile soil is lost due to erosion, that is 3.4 tons per person per year, costing 70US$ per inhabitant, worldwide costing 419 billion dollars which is an astronomical amount. With business as usual by 2050 human will require two earth planets, this is very alarming situation to continue feeding current (7.3 billion) and two billion extra people by 2050.

Healthy soils are essential for healthy life, however

soils are shrinking for food and ecosystem services

Why landscapes are essential in urban development? To compensate the pressure of growing population urban development is essential and consequently the cities are growing rapidly and new ones are developed too. For example in Europe an area as large as city of Berlin is transformed to urban area every year. In these areas biodiversity is lost as well as loss of rare native plants, the soils become sealed where nothing can grow, overtime increase green house gasses and no carbon sequestration. In addition globally every year 13 million hectares of forests are cut down. Such losses can only be compensated when urban development projects include urban landscaping entities where the lost biodiversity can be compensated. Such urban landscaping provides many services to the

residents and also cleans the environment through climate change mitigation.

Healthy landscapes can cut green house gasses and increase carbon sequestration.Soils stores more than 4000 billion tons of carbon, the forests stores 360 billion tons of carbon as woody mass, and atmosphere more than 800 billion tons in the form of carbon dioxide. This can be explained by the fact that if urban development do not include healthy landscaping the soils originally sequestering carbon are now set carbon free, and hence such activities are not environmentally friendly, the necessary result is an aggravation of climate change (rise in green house gasses and atmospheric temperature). In order to achieve this important service from urban landscaping, these landscaping must be set up on healthy soils and the soil quality is maintained throughout and monitored to assure they are providing healthy eco-services.

Healthy soils are pre-requisite for healthy urban landscaping, UAE perspectives.Let us be first agreeing on the fact that without soil landscaping cannot be established, if this is true then we have no doubt in phrasing out.

If this phrase is widely accepted, then we have to assure that these landscapes are established on healthy soils, using less

water, these are cost effective, sustainable and providing services for healthy life

No soil no landscapesIn the UAE, red sandy soils are used as base material for urban landscaping. Sandy soils are plagued with very low water and nutrient holding capacities, which results in frequent irrigation and nutrient application, high leaching, nutrient losses and groundwater pollution. Furthermore, in the UAE the high temperatures combined with infrequent and scanty rainfall calls for new ways to conserve water, improve soil properties and prevent

Page 16: Landscape Magazine August 2015

14 i www.landscape-me.com i august 2015

nutrient loss. One of the best ways towards improving landscaping services is to focus on improving soil health through innovative ways such as but not necessarily limited to “climate smart technologies”. Thus it is imperative to improve properties of sandy soils in terms of moisture and nutrient retention, leading to efficient use of water resources and preventing ground water pollution. Such an improvement is only possible when the sandy soils are amended with inorganic and organic materials to improve soil quality for plant growth and water saving. At ICBA we have proved through green house and field trials that the addition of suitable quantities of organic (compost, biochar) and inorganic (zeolite based) amendments, soil qualities can be improved leading to significant water saving and reducing maintenance costs.

Urban landscaping to offer educational services The landscape developers must take special care to ensure that the urban landscapes also serve as a place where the visitors especially “the youth” are able to learn the values of plants, especially when clusters of native plants from different habitats are included. Other educational entities could be the addition of aflaj system (old way of water transportation), plants growing in different ways (open field and greenhouse hydroponics, soil less, aeroponics etc), demonstration of modern irrigation systems (surface and sub-surface drip, sprinkler, bubbler etc) for efficient use of water resources, boulders from different mountains of UAE and creation of seven circle of different colour sands as UAE heritage.

ICBA educates youth through exterior and interior educational exhibits The exterior exhibits are displayed in the educational landscape design including different types of plants (shrubs, trees, grasses etc), an Aflaj system, hues of UAE portray naturally different sand colours depending upon their unique composition. This can be seen in the seven sands colour concept that these are being a colour code for each emirate as shown on a souvenir frame which usually tourists look for in the UAE. The storyline of the exterior exhibits is above ground.

Internationally there is growing movement calling for increased awareness about the importance of soils and the critical role

they play in securing food and providing ecosystem services

The interior exhibits are showcased in the unique soil museum at ICBA. The storyline for the museum is underground that is the way how we plan to educate the youth. Soil

Soil

museum presents diversity of interior exhibits such as, soil investigation equipment exhibit provide hands-on knowledge about essential soil investigation tools and equipment (manual as well as digital) used for on-site soil investigation including auguring, cutting, sampling and testing, sand dune simulator, water infiltration simulation, soil monoliths of key soils from UAE in their near original environment. The interior exhibits cover different themes (soil and climate change, soil and desertification, soil and agriculture, soil and food security, soil and environment etc). The museum is currently under redesigning for official launching at the occasion of celebration of the International Year of Soils 2015 in the last quarter of this year.

artificial grass

All that is green is not necessarily grass and in the world of football superstars like Leo Messi, Christiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, their working

days are frequently spent racing around the very latest synthetic grass surfaces.

It’s a long way from the Bernabeu to the quaint, historic town of Maryport in England’s glorious Lake District, but that’s where the very latest technology in synthetic surfaces are produced by SIS Pitches, suppliers to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and a host of other sporting giants across the globe.

The list of premier sporting clubs across the world lining up to install these pristine, laser levelled SIS Pitches surfaces spans indoor and outdoor football, rugby, hockey, tennis, golf, cricket, athletics, multi-sports and more. The club is also a world leader in the finest natural grass pitches.

Beyond sports, a long list of schools, local council authorities and even homeowners are increasingly attracted by the combination of hard-wearing, weather resistant, water-conscious, environmentally sound, synthetic grass requiring minimal maintenance.

Another advantage of synthetic grass is that SIS Pitches has developed specialist products for individual sports. Critical to the growth of their range of football synthetic grass has been official recognition and approval by FIFA, the English FA and FAI for four distinct soccer surfaces.

It was convincing enough for Barcelona FC director Emilio Sabadell who commented; “FC Barcelona contracted SIS to install new pitches at our training centre and at our stadium Camp Nou. The project was completed on time, on budget and our experience with SIS was excellent.”

And Real Madrid head groundsman Paul Burgess added; “SIS were able to complete work on time and budget with high quality, an essential combination when working for Real Madrid. I am pleased to say all works met our high standards.”

Natural looking green grass that remains smart throughout the year.

Page 19: Landscape Magazine August 2015

17 i www.landscape-me.com i august 2015

Last year saw SIS Pitches completing projects for Saracen’s RFC who were the first English Premiership rugby club to play on a synthetic pitch. In a crunching sport that is hard on playing surface, but sensitive to player injuries, Saracens had a choice of the company’s Rugger monofilament and Scrummager fibrillated yarn turf. These World Rugby approved surfaces offer softness but also extra in-built durability and pile recovery.

They were quickly followed by Newcastle Falcons, whose MD Mick Hogan said; “The end result was a world class surface that has exceeded all expectations. It has significantly increased our performance as a club on and off the field and we are delighted with the pitch.”

Extremes of weather conditions pose serious problems for grounds staff caring for natural grass surfaces, but are effortlessly handled by the latest 3G synthetic turf. But whether it is freezing conditions in Russia or harsh heat in the Middle East, SIS Pitches has either an indoor or outdoor solution.

As a one-stop manufacturer and installer, SIS Pitches boasts its sub-surface preparation works not only ensure optimum levelling and comfort, but also heating and cooling solutions to offset weather extremes.

At the end of 2013 the firm handed over new natural cricket ovals at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, which are now being fully utilised by various teams including warm up matches for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. But synthetic is starting to make its impact with pitch surrounds and warm up zones currently being installed at the Al Ahli stadium, Dubai, UAE.

Synthetic turf is constructed like carpet and comes in rolls that are built to specification for each individual customer. The type of yarn used is based on criteria such as:

• The numbers of hours of daily play on the surface?• What sports to be played on the surface?• What standard of play is required?• How will the surface be funded?

Page 20: Landscape Magazine August 2015

18 i www.landscape-me.com i august 2015

artificial grass

The yarn used is critical and the latest 3G versions come in monofilament single strands or multi-strand fibrillated versions in tough but soft polypropylene or polyethylene material. This comes in varying gauges and are durability-tested to up to 14,000 Lisport cycles. Once tufted, the product is then finished with a backing material in customised softness and strengths.

Synthetic grass comes in a range of profiles and colours, which are blended and are today difficult to distinguish from natural grass. A variety of pile heights ranging from 9mm - 70mm are suited for varying sports or leisure applications.

Stadium designers have been quick to demand exciting new ranges of colours from standard

green through to blue, red, orange, and even stripes. These are often used to highlight touchlines, dugout zones, goal areas and can even feature logos and lettering.

It is an explosive new material that has shifted steadily from professional sports into schools and public projects eager to exploit the advantages of a surface that can be used

all year round, in all weather. Parents and pet owners are among the vanguard of residential owners who are going with the ‘no-mow’ artificial grass option in the garden.

Installation involves soil preparation, sand layering and often a shockpad to provide a cushioned base necessary for comfort and even ball bounce. The rolls turf are laid down using

specialist precision machinery in large stadia, but can be easily put down by homeowners for simple garden projects.

It is the household name sporting giants that attract most attention however and a company like SIS Pitches can reel off the clubs they are working with worldwide. It hints at exciting new products that will change the face of sports.

Historic English Championship club Derby County FC has recently been completed two new 3G pitches at their training centre and SIS is currently working on a stunning main stadium pitch for Besiktas of Turkey. It will also install two more projects in Azerbaijan this year. One project at FC Gabala features a full size synthetic pitch.

George Mullan, CEO for SIS Pitches is delighted with their growing order book; ‘Our team in Europe have already completed work in Russia, Spain, Turkey and Denmark.”

He indicates that for many clients the attraction of synthetic grass lies with the ability to extend use to activities outside normal use. One example is stadium pitches which can be filled with crowds for concerts with no damage to the surface.

“Recently, SIS Pitches installed an outstanding 3G artificial sports pitch for an ambitious non-league football club and within weeks the club was benefiting from significant additional profits from their new pitch through extra rental income generated.

Indeed, the club expect to boost their profits by over £150,000 each year. Meaning that their new SIS synthetic sports surface will pay for itself in the shortest of time and they will even begin making a profit very quickly,“ adds Mr Mullan.

Park life

Lead master planner and landscape architect ValleyCrest Design Group has undertaken a USD48.7m renovation of Mushrif Central Park, one of the oldest and largest parks in Abu

Dhabi, UAE. Innovative landscape architecture has ensured that the redesigned park echoes traditional Islamic gardens and culture, yet has a contemporary architectural feel. It comprises current architectural forms, using water features, a mixed palette of modern materials, and an array of plant life from around the world.

The park was completed in March 2015 and was developed by Al Ain Properties for the Abu Dhabi Municipality. ValleyCrest Design Group designed the park’s landscape architecture, fountains and building architecture, and worked with international water feature specialist Crystal Fountains, Colorado-based architects Semple

Brown, and the Denver and Abu Dhabi based engineering firm S.A Miro on various aspects of implementation.

Previously Mushrif Central Park had been for the use of women and children exclusively, but is now open to everyone, with a new found focus on community and family entertainment. It was redesigned following in-depth consultation with local community groups, and now encompasses playgrounds, large open green spaces which are very rare in the Middle East, 14 modern water features, an amphitheatre, botanical gardens and an animal petting zoo with goats, camels and donkeys that encourages education and interactivity.

Designed to honour the legacy of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE, the park includes features that adhere to his vision of preserving the culture and natural history of the country. As part of its design process, ValleyCrest Design Group visited other parks in the emirates to gain inspiration and build on the landscape narrative ensuring Mushrif Central Park is a traditional yet unprecedented space for the people of Abu Dhabi.

An east to west promenade and a walkway running from the park’s main entrance form two primary axes inform its overall design by creating a quadripartite geometric pattern. This references typical Islamic gardens, which are traditionally divided into four segments. A variety of smaller pathways run off the promenade creating a series of connected loops leading through the park’s individual gardens, courtyards, water features, open spaces and to its major amenities.

In Middle Eastern culture parks are visited after dusk and the park’s layout encourages long evening strolls. Arts and crafts markets run along the main promenade, which plays a key role in way-finding and exploration of the wider gardens,

Page 24: Landscape Magazine August 2015

elegant spaces and smaller paths. At night 14 water features are particularly noticeable, with most being lit by hundreds of Crystal’s multi-coloured submersible LED lights.

Brent Lloyd, Principal at ValleyCrest Design Group explains, “The source water fountain at the centre point of the main promenade marks the park’s architectural centre of gravity where the two primary axes or paths cross. From the entrance visitors are led directly to the source fountain, quickly placing them at the heart of the park. Each quadripartite area provides entirely different experiences for the public. For example, the animal petting zoo is in the western quarter, while botanical gardens sit in the southern quarter.”

Over 200 different species of plants are present in Mushrif Central Park, and the layering of plants with different construction materials and water adds to its architectural aesthetic form. The park’s botanical garden shade house and flower garden enable collections of plants to be cultivated for research, conservation, display and education,

with multiple species introduced from America, Africa, Asia and Australia.

This includes a wide range of cacti originating from the United States such as echinocatcus, agave and yucca. The circular flower garden displays flowering collections in all seasons. Its winding network of pathways inspire visitors as they explore the landscape and discover native and global flowering types. These include the evergreen shrub Copperleaf, Saharan flowering plant Desert Rose, Artiplex canescens which is a four wing saltbush, and Jatropha, a flowering shrub native to Latin America, among others.

Some species have been planted with His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al

Nahyan’s memory in mind. “His Highness Sheikh Zayed was renowned for achieving what many others said was impossible in the development of the UAE. In recognition of his spirit we have attempted to grow plants that people would not expect to see in the Middle East, enabling the park to bring new species to the region,” says Brent Lloyd.

The park’s botanical gardens are arranged into zones according to landscape type including oasis, agricultural, wadi and dunes. Their individual gardens are linked by pathways that allow exploration of different landscapes from world regions, and many that have strong links to the Middle East. A mix of structures and construction materials create a contemporary architectural appearance.

The 420-metre promenade water pool features two channels running down the middle with a series of stepped cascades, and aerated nozzles, culminating in large circular focal point water features at each end. Water metaphorically flows in four directions from the source fountain and symbolises the creation of life through water. The promenade fountain’s channels are inspired by the traditional falaj, or open irrigation channel, which has historically been used in the Middle East to transport water for irrigation of gardens and farms.

Simon Gardiner, Director of Creative Design at Crystal Fountains says, “Mushrif Central Park is a tremendously exciting project that

“Visitors enter the park by passing through an opening, in a signature tall glass cube, that marks the entrance, and creates a striking access point. It is clearly visible from the car park and nearby roads, with patterned glass panels that are lit up with colour-changing lights in the evening,” adds Lloyd.

The Wisdom Garden lies to the south of the promenade’s central point, and is comprised of eye-catching water walls made of black granite that form the garden’s boundaries. They are inscribed with quotations from the late Sheikh Zayed and are intensified with soft white lighting that illuminate the cascading water features.

Page 26: Landscape Magazine August 2015

we are proud to have been involved with. Crystal provided engineering services and equipment for the park’s 14 water features that are essential to its landscape architecture. ValleyCrest Design Group’s design has ensured that the visual entertainment starts gently, with a small pool at the entrance to the park, drawing visitors in and preparing them for what is to come. They are then met with different, inspiring water features that navigate them through the park.”

Pools have been created inside the shade building with natural stone and provide a habitat for exotic plants. They are connected by streams that enable water to cascade down through pools, while a large reflecting pool of water is divided by a pedestrian bridge. The 30m high shade house is the tallest structure in the park. Its eye-catching steel and aluminium structure was inspired by the elements found within a palm frond and seeks to create a simple yet dynamic form. Louvers,

each calibrated to a specific compass point orientation, comprise the structure’s façade and control sunlight, and levels of shade, to support plant growth in the botanical gardens.

Another key feature is the park’s amphitheatre that provides a venue for concerts, musicals and plays. It can accommodate over 1,000 visitors and is bordered by retaining walls that offer a canvas for art and lighting displays. Visitors reach the amphitheatre after passing through the Wisdom Garden and a large oval shaped lawn. It is one of the most striking

features in the park, with a complex sculptural steel structure that sweeps and curves high above the stage and seating, providing a visual contrast to the surrounding stone walls and grass that border it.

The amphitheatre’s stage also has a dual function in that it can seamlessly change into a lively interactive water feature. It encourages the public to play in it, by shooting streams of water up from flush mounted nozzles, creating different water shows that provide a visual attraction and a cooling effect for those relaxing in the adjoining green space.

Sustainability is a key design focus. The park was awarded a ‘2 Pearl’ rating under the Estidama sustainable building standards used in the Middle East, which is a first for a park in the region. 200 existing trees were relocated alongside the park’s main pathways. Retaining the original palm trees planted in the ’1980s was key as the city’s short history means they are among the oldest and largest in Abu Dhabi. The visitor experience would be very different without the retained trees due to the shade and connection to the environment they provide.

Since a park had never been taken through the Estidama process, ValleyCrest Design Group devised systems that enabled it to be Estidama rated and to manage water use. The use of water is optimised through sophisticated systems that give exact quantities of water to plants, ensuring they are never over irrigated. The redesigned park is hugely popular with the local community. Prior to its renovation around 150,000 people visited the park annually, while today it is visited by the same number every two weeks.

Michael Miro, director of project management at S.A Miro sums up why the park is so successful, “I have lived in Abu Dhabi for years and the renovated park is unlike anything the city has ever seen. The amenities and open green spaces it offers are unprecedented in the Middle East, as is its central location for a park in the middle of the city, which makes it accessible to so many. It is a huge benefit to families, and children especially.”

Paul Sangha Landscape Architecture is passionate about design, about the possibilities for uniting architecture, nature, and design in creating highly individual gardens and experiences.

Quintessential features a steeply graded driveway that dips down from the street to the porte cocherè, which is bounded by a striking water feature. Made by a local artist from an impressively large piece of emerald green jade, a sculpture appears to float on the top of the surface of a slate blue pool. The weathered Corten steel wall behind the work is a multifaceted volume that conjures the coastal mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Between the mountains, water pours like snow melt down a stainless steel water-course. The bold gesture of the feature near the main entry door is an enticing invitation into the space and a harbinger of the wondrous landscape to come.

Quintessential is a moving picture of a landscape: with seemingly every step is a new reveal and an enriched understanding of what the garden is and what it possesses.

From the entry garden, a grove of Mountain Hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) leads around

the side of the house to a small terrace with a table also made of jade, imparting a sense of material continuity.

Extending from the living room, a large terrace affords views of another terrace below and of a lawn shaped like a leaf blade. Past the

sculpted lawn, a vast view of a ravine with old growth forest opens up. A much larger lawn meets a pavilion that overlooks the ravine. The meeting of the built environment and the forest is surreal, and the pavilion allows one to soak in the confluence.

A koi pond consisting of multiple pools treats the ears to a pleasant babble as the water circulates. An artist was commissioned to carefully place columns of local basalt to achieve the best spatial and acoustic effects.

Above the pond is a large sculpture of a Beech leaf, made from local jade, standing as if dropped from a tree and celebrating the Beech trees on the property.

Nearby is another pavilion, this one offering a full view of almost the entire designed landscape. Here one can bear witness to the beautifully spun web of axes and paths that crisscross the property, visually connecting garden elements and creating an evocative narrative for the site.

What is your educational background?I’m from the UK and I have been in the landscape industry for close to 30 years. Having graduated from the School of Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, I have spent the majority of my career working overseas in locations such as the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Arabian Gulf. In addition to my training at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh,I have attended some of the leading landscape institutions in the UK to further my knowledge of interior landscape and turf management.

Tell us about your experience in the GCC.I joined Desert Turfcare as a landscape project manager in 2006, then becoming the operations manager for the division in 2009. I was handed the general managers position in January this year.

What are your company’s main activities and services?Desert Turfcare Company was set up in 1994 primarily to provide in-house landscape

maintenance services on projects completed by our landscape construction division, Desert Landscape. Since our formation we have grown sustainably and currently have approximately nine million square metres of landscape under our management and are now the leading landscape maintenance service provider in the region. This continuous organic growth has driven the requirement to segment into eight operational business units, which allow us to offer value and quality via a full spectrum of soft maintenance services. This includes residential, royal and government projects, swimming pools, commercial, hotels and resorts, interior landscape, domestic pest control, sports turf and golf courses. Each business unit is led by a divisional manager core values, “Employee Engagement, Profitability, Innovation, Customer “, or EPIC. Desert Turfcare focus continuously on innovation and offering unique services. For example; we were the first company in the region to use recyclable / mulching deck grass mowers. With customer centric operations as our primary goal we are now using battery powered machinery on

our hotels and resorts projects, this reduces noise pollution and helps our hotel clients maintain excellence in guest experience whilst boosting their ‘green’ credentials.

What are the main challenges of doing business in the current market? The main challenges we face tend to occur during the hot summer months, from June through to September. This is the period of optimum plant metabolism resulting in rapid growth requiring an increase of cultural inputs (irrigation cycles, grass cutting, hedge trimming etc). During this period it is important that productivity from the workforce is carefully managed. The heat of the summer coupled with fasting and reduced hours during the Holy month requires accurate planning of the work activities in order to ensure that quality of deliverables is not compromised. Our management and supervision teams, under the guidance of our CEO, Michael Mascarenhas, have many years of demonstrated experience in managing the workforce during these periods to ensure employee morale is kept high and health and wellbeing is not compromised. This commitment to employee engagement ensures that a high level of productivity continues throughout the summer months.

How do you fulfill its commitments to water conservation? As the end user and the custodian of the landscape project, we work carefully with our clients to ensure water conservation is prioritised, where feasible during project design. Our irrigation teams run preventative maintenance programmes to ensure that the irrigation systems are running efficiently. Irrigation cycles are accurately programmed and monitored through the various smart irrigation control systems on our projects to ensure that only the required volume of water is delivered at the optimum time. Additionally we utilise various landscape products such as mulches, anti-desiccants and growth regulators to minimise water consumption. An integrated management approach towards irrigation water conservation can deliver quality landscapes with a minimum water budget.

What projects has Desert Turfcare been involved in?Over many successful years of operations, Desert Turcare have forged long term partnerships with some of the region’s leading hotels and resorts. Our clientele includes Atlantis the Palm, The One and Only Royal Mirage and One & Only The Palm,

Jumeirah Group of hotels and the Hyatt Group of hotels. Our ability to cultivate trusted partnerships has been recognised by the fact that we are the preferred supplier of all outsourced landscape services for Royal Properties. Desert Turfcare’s Sports Turf Division is recognised as one of the region’s leading service providers. We have been associated with Emirates Dubai Rugby 7’s since its inception and have delivered services to two FIFA competitions held in the UAE.

What are some of the more complex projects you have encountered? We were asked by the government of Bahrain if we could completely renovate ten of their major football pitches, including the national stadium over a six month period in order for them to host the 2013 GCC Cup Football Tournament. This was a very complex project as it involved conditioning and shipping over 80,000 square metres of grass from Dubai into Bahrain. Delivery of this high profile project on time and to

budget was a result of active collaboration between various companies within the Desert Group. The project was a major success and the client now views us as their go to company for quality and reliability subsequently awarding us a sole supplier status for their entire portfolio of sports pitches in the Kingdom.

Tell us about some exciting new services in your company? The recent establishment of our Domestic Pest Control, House of Flowers and Plantscapes businesses, bring a new set of added value, quality services to our existing clients and provides an opportunity for us to enter new markets. We are activity collaborating with leading local and global industry partners in research and development activities. This has allowed us to develop an exciting new range of green wall technologies which we will be looking to launch in the UAE later this year. Additionally we are in discussion with a local SME to convert a range of our maintenance fleet to operate on biodiesel, to help us reduce our carbon footprint.

underneath with its organic form. “WES-Landschaftsarchitektur” planned the landscape surrounding the roof.In the architectural application of this image, it was necessary to produce the greatest possible lightness - a special static principle allows for the unique roof structure to be anchored in just two points. It lays in the landscape and defines a clear and protected room. The planning of the structural framework was done by “Schlaich Bergmann und Partner”. The orientation of the roof represents a welcoming gesture through its curvature. The elegant amorphous geometry of the roof structure forms an evident bridge between top and bottom, between sky and landscape.

The associated service pavilion fulfills various functions, the customer can ask questions about his new car, purchase accessories or get information about Autostadt attractions and activities. As the roof follows the concept of a leaf, the pavilion is integrated into the architectural landscape and not designed as a separate building. Basic forms of the roof can be found in the interior architecture.

life there became forever etched in his memory. And so he made a promise that one day he would build a Moorish house with an Andalusian garden.

A few years later when he came into money, he decided to bring his dream to life in Marrakech, Morocco as it reminded him of the Granada palace. Sharing his vision with architect Ahmed Bentaher, owner of Hortis Landscaping Design based in Marrakech, he asks him to design a garden of over 50,000 m2. The plantations were to be of secular adult size so as to take advantage of it right away.

Accepting the challenge, Bentaher visited his client in Granada to study the gardens. Together they compiled plans for the landscaped area with its axes and rectangular ponds. Several ornamental themes were then planned in this great set - a rose garden, tropical garden,

singapore is a modern, cosmopolitan city that is claiming its place as a global city of the world. this has emerged amidst dramatic transformation of its founding at the start of the 19th century. this is only possible through a deliberate approach of actively reinstating greenery to replace natural space that have been inadvertently lost during urbanization.

“Piet Oudolf is best known for his now-iconic designs for the High line in New York City and millennium Park in Chicago. Hummelo, his own garden in the Netherlands, is visited by thousands of gardeners each year. it serves as his personal design and plant propagation laboratory, and is where he has honed his aesthetic and created new varieties of plants for over three decades.

this title charts how the garden of one of the world’s best-known and most-loved plantsmen has evolved, and gives frank assessments of his experiments that have gone both well and awry. Hummelo, timed to coincide with Oudolf’s 70th birthday and his acceptance of Holland’s most prestigious cultural award, provides his throngs of followers with a chronology of how his naturalistic style and career has developed. lush photography documents how the garden has changed and inspired him over the years, and text by prolific garden writer Noel Kingsbury will ensure a lively read for all home garden enthusiast”.
