Located in the I-70 Colorado corridor, forty minutes west of Vail, the

town of Eagle represents a community shaped by the culture

of ranching and agriculture. Appreciated by the community, the Eagle

County Fair and award-winning rodeo occurs just one week

out of the year. This proposal orchestrates recreation and

entertainment opportunities for the other 358 days of the year at the

fairgrounds.

“It is not clear whether sustainability has truly achieved the same

importance as economic growth, though the future of our planet may

depend on it”. (Thomas Daniels, 2009). This was the attitude for the

Long Island big ideas design competition for my four member team of a

green technology live-work proposal entitled Greendustry.

Key to the success of designers, collaborative or team eff orts can

provide intuitive and creative ideas through rapid contemplation

cycles. The following design charette included a highly productive

week long process that generated thoughtful ideas for the rapid

growth of Manhattan, Kansas. The team consisted of eight individuals

from diff erent backgrounds, skill levels, and majors, which in turn

proved to be an excellent communication and design exercise.

The need for sustainable design isn’t approaching the forefront of

our profession: it is already here. The following park was a group

collaboration focusing on plant material, master planning, and client

connection, specifi cally tailored to the idea of creating a carbon neutral

site.

Hands on or a fi rst hand experience with site construction,

installation, or fabrication is highly valuable. Understanding the

complexities and processes that occur to actually get a design built

is crucial. Contemplating the feasibility of a creative design cannot

hinder the design process, however for real world projects it must be

a consideration. The following contains a set of technical drawings

created for the needs of the 190th Air Refueling Wing of Topeka,

Kansas.

Multi-use spaces or designs allow for the interaction of social,

economic, and environmental processes. The proposal for the Saddle

Brook Golf and Equestrian Community includes large single family

home sites as well as small multi-family lots. The aesthetic as well as

cultural aspects of the equestrian traditions in Ocala, Florida were

utilized to connect the residential community thus creating a highly

integral design that serves a multitude of users and programs.

Not to be forgotten, landscapes should evoke a sense of fulfi llment

and enjoyment; a place where people can just have fun. This was

the idea for the Skate Plaza located in Westminster, Colorado. An

urban skate plaza serves the needs of local skate enthusiasts as

well as creates a place for concerts, dinning, and other outdoor

opportunities. The design promotes user participation in a

environment where people can be themselves and enjoy outdoor

recreation and relaxation.

Visiting diff erent places across the United States and around the

world is a great way to better understand and comprehend social

aspects of diff erent cultures. Experiencing cultures fi rsthand rather

than seeing them through imagery and text is far more rewarding.

I was given the opportunity to visit Italy for four months and

experience an entirely diff erent culture than I am used to. While in

Italy I acquainted myself with the cuisine, dialogue, transportation,

housing, and recreation of the region.
