DC Water - Parking FacilityWashington, DC

Cost: TBDClient: McKissack & McKissack

WMC provided design services for the develop-ment of an environment friendly parking facility. This included utilizing LID (Low Impact Develop-ment) and energy efficient construction for this project.

The parking lot pavement is covered with a Cool Pavement coating that reduces surface tempera-tures and lighting requirements. Surface drainage from the lot is directed to rain gardens, which re-duces runoff and promotes infiltration. Plants were selected that have low water requirements and are acclimated to the local climate, eliminating the need for irrigation upon establishment. A portion of the planting zone is reserved for researching new planting media. These elements were incorpo-rated into a design that simulates flowing water or waves. In addition, a ribbon of color runs through the parking area paving. The planting mixes are organized in waves that meander through the planting areas over varying topography.
