Pattern is a design in which lines, shapes, forms or colours are repeated. The art that is repeated is called a motif

Time to Draw!

Now we are going to have a go at drawing the basic outline of a landscape. You might be inspired by Ted Harrison or Jeannete Calstrom. I found pictures of landscapes to base mine on. Try 4 different landscapes.

Jeannete Carlstrom She is a Swedish Folk artist.  She loves to paint fun and whimsical folk art with a twist. And is inspired by the tropics of Hawaii, Swedish and Mexican folk art and quilts from all over the world.  Patterns are a passion of hers as are collage and mixed media art.

Complementary coloursWe want to create a contrast with the colours we use. Contrast refers to the striking difference between two elements.

Complementary colours are pairs of colours that contrast with each other more than any other colour, and when placed side-by-side make each other look brighter

When you are happy with one draw it on a new piece of paper. Go over it in black pen. Now carefully add Patterns. Think carefully about which ones you put next to each other to create contrast. You could either draw in pencil first and go over in pen or draw straight in pen.

Colours which are on opposite sides of the colour wheel have a strong contrast and are known as complementary colours.

Red is a complement of green

Yellow is a complement of violet

Here Picasso has used the complimentary colours green and red. Can you spot the other pair of complimentary colours?

Time to Paint! Now you can use water colours or slightly watered-down paint to carefully colour in each section. Use your colour wheel to select which complimentary colours to use next to each other.

If you don’t have paint you could use crayons.
