New LMA board member, Neil Goldman was born and raised in Chicago. The eldest of four, he grew up with one brother and two sisters. LMA Pres. Don McMurray began the meeting by reporting on a special meeting he began hosting on the first Tuesday of every month at The Landings Racquet Club between 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. for anyone who wishes to make comments or ask questions. A Few people did participate and some notable comments and suggestions were made. One res ident made a glowing appreciation of the work that Joe Hennessy is doing as chairman of the Landscaping Committee. Another suggested a regular column appear in The Eagle regarding safety and security issues. A general complaint was raised by another resident regarding the size of vendor vehicles and where they are parking when they are providing their services. McMurray also reported meeting with the Communications Committee to discuss the need to develop a process to allow the board to get word to every resident.

FINANCE REPORT Finance committee chair, Marie Graziosi-Jacaruso announced Carol Carr was appointed as a new member of the finance committee. She went on to report a surplus of $1197.11 through the first three months of this year. The committee sent 51 residents a refund of the 5% late fee overcharge. Currently 21 unit owners have a combined balance due of $15,205. These delinquent assessments are being addressed by the LMA attorney. In addition, Graziosi-Jacaruso announced the policy for collecting outstanding annual assessment debt is being reviewed.

INTERSECTION CONGESTION Attorney, Steve J. Chase Esq. gave an extensive report on the current status and future plans regarding the traffic congestion issue at Kestral Parkway and Hwy 41. Within the next few weeks, Chase

hopes to finalize a draft lawsuit and get the demand letters to the property owners who have an interest in the entryway and intersection. At that point, property owners will have 10 days to respond. These responses will help determine the next course of action.

COMMUNICATIONSCOMMITTEE

Co-chairs, Bob Manteiga and Joan Lowery reported meeting with several committees in an effort to determine the primary function and purpose of their committee. They determined their committee is to help build a sense of community and to promote understanding and awareness. They hope to involve more people in the use of the website and plan to provide more training opportunities for residents who return in the fall. The possibility of hiring a guru teenage webmaster was also mentioned.

FORWARD PLANNING Forward Planning chair, Michael Knupp reported he is continuing to collect submittals from committee chairman. These submissions will be reviewed and recommendations and comments will be offered at a later meeting.

COMMUNITY EVENTS Chairman Doug Day reported his committee is continuing to update their list of parental contacts as well as continuing to decide on appropriate party themes for young people 13 and under.

ROADS Roads chair, Rudy Blohm reported the committee had asked several paving contractors to check The Landings roads for needed repairs. Asphalt Repair Service submitted a bid of $1542. to repair 24 small areas. The process of repair they use is guaranteed for five years. Funds already in the budget will be used to accomplish these repairs.

Once funds are available, Blohm suggested the existing observation deck be replaced with an observation tower. Ramate Construction Inc. submitted a bid of $20,000 to build a 12 foot high observation tower. This project will be considered at a later date.

LAKES Lakes chair, Larry Lawrence was pleased to report Sarasota County dredging department cleared the first 100 feet of Treehouse Lake, Lake 2. This work needed to be done for five years. Lawrence went on to report that Sarasota County has decided to dredge the horseshoe shaped sediment shelf on North Lake, Lake 1. The timing will depend on whether they have to get competitive bids. The county expects it will cost them approximately $25,000. And finally, information regarding the operation of the weir on Mayne Lake, Lake 9 from the EPCA is expected by June.

EAGLE EDITORIALCOMMITTEE

Committee chair, Larry Lawrence reported his committee adopted the following mission statement. The mission of The Landings Eagle is to objectively communicate information on the news, social activities, policy issues, the political environment and physical developments that are relevant to Landings residents. The Eagle serves as an advocate and forum for consideration of important topics. The Eagle works cooperatively with the other Landings communications efforts. The publication of information in The Eagle is guided by the LMA Editorial Committee. Lawrence ended his report by recognizing and thanking Irwin Starr for all the work he did writing a “Publicity Outline” to guide anyone interested in properly promoting their Landings event.

Lettersto the Editor

In response to the letters to the editor, Sandy and I would like to thank Jim Dickson for his support. It was interesting to find that over 50 people had to pay the penalty on their yearly dues when in reality most never received any invoice or reminders. It was also discovered that the penalty of 10% was illegal by Florida Statue when it should have been only 5%. LMA finally corrected this by sending a refund for the overcharge. I have checked with other condo associations and their policies was, after not receiving their quarter assessments in 30 days, they send or call a second notice So much for the tolerance and understanding of the LMA board. So, my final words to all of you, “Living in Paradise” is to mark your calendars for this December because as the man said so brilliantly, “LMA can use the money.”

Burt and Sandy Frank

I read with dismay the response in the May edition of The Eagle by former board member Mr. Spelman. His reasoning is discouraging and I am delighted he is a FORMER board member. His trivializing of the problem presented by the Frank family is insulting to all. I certainly hope we can pay more attention to who serves on our boards, and certainly hope people who might be interested in moving to “Paradise” don’t read his letter and wonder if a much lower biblical entity might be more likely. The lack of empathy is discouraging. We really need to do better.

ABC 7 (WWSB) recent ly reported that the Manatee and Sarasota County Sheriff’s Offices are investigating a recent rash of crimes where gated communities have been burglarized by a “non-violent, but sophisticated and fast group”, according to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Wendy Rose.

A unique characteristic of these burglaries has been that the suspects are typically well dressed females driving a high-end rented vehicles. “Targeted items seem to be jewelry and high end electronics”, according to Rose. T h e S a r a s o t a C o u n t y c o m m u n i t i e s h i t t h u s f a r

(Plantation Country Club in Venice, The Inlets in Nokomis, and Calusa Lakes near Laurel Rd.) all seem to be out of the way locations, with quick easy access to the interstate. Landings residents should be on the look out for any suspicious activity and report it to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office at 316-1201.

W i t h H o w a r d F e l t m a n ’ s retirement from his many years of chairing the Landings Learning Group, its planning committee, has named Bridget Frymier and Selma Savren to lead that committee as co-chairs. The hard-working committee has been busy planning the 2016 program schedule which will be announced in December. They are eager to recruit volunteers to serve with them. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in the planning and staging of the 2016 program. The committee welcomes new members with new ideas. It is a stimulating

LLG Committee looking for volunteers

At its regular May board meeting the board approved a roof replacement on Pine Harrier Dr and a paver driveway on Peregrine Point Circle W. In response to a question by a member in attendance, the board reviewed its position on an article in The Landings Eagle regarding the possibility of an increased incidence of “tear-down” transactions in The Landings. While on the one hand, it indicated that it thought there would be relative few such incidents given the size of the lots in the Association, it pointed out that its ability to control such activity was limited to the required approval of the design and appearance of the replacement structure. It has no ability to prevent a tear-down per se.The board reviewed with another member who was present the operation of a small business out of the residence. The owner acknowledged the Association’s concern and indicated that operations would be relocated to a commercial space. Letters of violation regarding the condition of several roofs will be sent to owners of the property. With no progress on resolving a drainage issue on Peregrine Point Way, the matter will be referred to Association counsel for further action. The next board meeting of the Association will be on June 11, 2015.

As we transition into the “warmer months” of the year, I want to encourage those who remain in our community for the summer to be safe, stay cool, and enjoy what our wonderful community has to offer. By now, most residents are aware of the changes in our driving policies that the Board has, and is, enacting in an effort to increase the safety on our roads. On June 1st the speed limit on Landings Blvd and Kestral Park Way (North & South) will be reduced to 20 mph. All other roads will remain with a 15 mph speed limit. However, as you may have noticed in the news recently, we are not alone. Drivers, walkers, and bicyclists sharing the same limited transportation space has become a major issues in many communities and towns across the country. The Board’s primary goal is that we want our residents to be safe when they use our roads. However, everyone knows the Board can enact all the rules,

restrictions, and punishments it wants to – the basic safety on our roads depends entirely on each of you – driver, walker, bicyclist, and pet walker – and what you do when you are on our roads. No one wants to be involved in a pedestrian accident! To accomplish this desired goal – drivers please, slow down, yield to pedestrians, bicyclist, and pet walker, and keep everyone’s safety as your primary objective. Walkers – please walk facing traffic and wear observable clothing (especially at night). Bicyclists – please ride with traffic and stay to the outside of the road. Pet owners, please walk your pet on the outside of the road, or better yet – on the grass. The bottom line is that when it comes to road safety – it takes a “Community Effort” to achieve the outcome we all want. It is not just the drivers – but, walkers, bicyclists, and pet owners all share in the task equally of being responsible, courteous, and aware of potential dangers

in order to avoid an outcome that none of us ever wants to see happen. I f o r m e d a Communications Committee this year to review our systems of communication and to coordinate the improvement in our abi l i ty to contact every home owners when we need to share important information. Obvious examples of information sharing would be in the case of an emergency, but there are other times when the Board needs to contact the members -- a change in policy, meetings, social events, etc. Currently, with the exception of using our postal system, we have no way of contacting everyone on short notice. Consequently, I have asked the committee to update our email system as a primary means of contacting everyone on short notice. Your email address will be protected and not shared with others, unless you provide

permission. All of our email messages are sent without individual identification (your email and name are not listed), so no one can get a copy of your email from our correspondence

with you. For those owners that we don’t have an email address, you will be receiving a mailed request to provide one to us. I ask you to seriously consider doing so to enable us to be able to communicate with you more efficiently. You have the right to not provide your email address to us, but please understand that making that choice restricts our primary means of communicating with you to the postal system. Finally, the last topic of this communication – which happens to dovetail well with the previous paragraph. H U R R I C A N E S E A S O N is officially upon us! It is important for you to begin to prepare for a potential storm. There are no storms on the

horizon currently, but it is far better to be prepared than it is to be forced to rush around at the last moment attempting to prepare your property when a storm is coming our way. Please pay attention to the local/state/national news information and alerts about preparing for a storm. The Board will also be in communication with home owners as we receive any pertinent information about a possible storm. Our initial communications will be through email – so, please help us help you! In closing, I mentioned last month that I would be available on the first Tuesday of each month from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the LRC to meet and discuss with any resident that has a question, suggestion, or complaint they would like to share with the board. Last month went well, with a number of residents sharing their thoughts and comments. Therefore, the next meeting will be Tuesday June 2nd.

Neil Goldman Rose McMullen One of of the many volunteers living in The Landings

Continued from cover story

Always a sports kind of guy, Neil met his wife, Sharon, in a bowling league when he was 27. Sharon soon became a stay-at-home-mom, shepherding their two boys, Scott and Mark, to school, soccer, and hockey. Neil was hired as a lawyer in a small 2-man office in Chicago. He had worked for only a year and a half when his boss was involved in a motorcycle accident, and it fell upon Neil’s shoulders to run the office by himself. Neil steadily expanded the practice to two offices and a total of 23 lawyers, with his own specialty becoming Personal Injury law. As his sons were growing up, they were lucky to have a dad who was very successful as a little league baseball, soccer, and travel hockey coach. (Both kids went on to play hockey in high school and later in college at the University of Illinois.)Neil hoped to replicate his childhood experience of visiting Grandfather’s summer cottage in South Haven. He and Sharon began to hunt for a summer house on Lake Michigan, finally settling on a place called New Buffalo in Harbor County, about 70 minutes from downtown Chicago. At the time, prices were low, and sellers could not even give those houses away! Before long, however, the area became ultra-chic and prices

skyrocketed. What brought the Goldman’s to Sarasota? Neil says, “We had the summer place in New Buffalo, and we needed a winter place. We wanted to be near water, and that ruled out Arizona.” Sharon’s Mother lived in Florida, as did other family members. After repeated visits, the Goldmans realized that the West Coast of Florida was right for them. In 2004, they found their perfect place at The Landings, and purchased one of the Portside Villas. Says Neil, “I planned to retire from the beginning, and I bought things early in preparation to retire, which I finally did a year and a half ago. For a period of 10 years, Sharon stayed at The Landings for most of the season. She got to drink with The Landings Ladies and play tennis, while I worked in Chicago.” Neil has served as President of Landings South #2, Portside Villas, and saw what a difference a well-run board could make. When asked to run for the Landings Board, Neil knew it was time to step up to bat. “I wanted to be sure that The Landings continued to be the type of community it had been for the previous 11 years. It’s the kind of place where people help each other out.”

Rose McMullen lives on Starling Drive only six months out of the year, the rest of her time is spent in Salem, Mass., with her husband, Dick. While in Sarasota, Rose spends two and a half months from (February 1st to April 15th) preparing and e-filing Federal and State income tax returns for low and moderate-income clients, with a special emphasis on those ages 60 and above, via the “free” AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program. You will find Rose at the Gulf Gate library three days a week; other locations include: the Selby and Fruitville Libraries as well as the Senior Friendship Center. Before she starts each tax season, Rose devotes up to a week of her time to update her skills studying the tax laws in order to pass the current yearly test for necessary

certifications. Rose says, that it’s rewarding seeing the same clients year after year. To her credit this is her nineteenth year volunteering for this program.

The Landings Loses Its Butterfly Man

Jim Mangold was known by everyone he met as a man with a big friendly smile and a hearty laugh. Jim was known in his tennis playing days as an enthusiastic player, aggressive at the net, who could be counted on for a lot of friendly banter. He also won many trophies playing tennis at The Landings. Sadly, Jim passed away in April. He had been a Landings resident for 28 years. Jim’s many close friends knew him as an artist, a creator of stunningly beautiful mounted butterflies. He began his hobby of collecting and mounting butterflies in 1997. Visitors to his home are greeted by an assortment of butterflies on every wall and ledge. Jim had been a lifelong lover of butterflies, but buying d e c o r a t i v e c o l l a g e s w a s expensive. A decorative collage with 40 butterflies, for example, could cost well over $2,000, he

discovered. So Jim decided, at age 71, to do the collages himself. He learned his craft through research at Selby Library and on the Internet. He soon discovered that no one was doing designs as he was. When Jim received the folded butterflies, he froze them for at least 48 hours to sanitize them, then put them between wet paper towels for 24 hours to soften their bodies so the wings

could be opened. Once softened, they could be mounted. This is when Jim’s wizardry began to shine. J i m ’ s h o m e s i n Sarasota , Newtown, and Connecticut display thousands of butterflies, exquisitely designed and mounted. The butterflies are from South, Central and North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the islands of the Pacific. There are over 20,000 known species. Jim is survived by his wife, Divina. His first wife Mary, died in Sarasota in 2002. They

have seven children and 16 grandchildren, all admirers of J im’s mind-boggling collection of butterflies

Doug Day Continued from cover story

Driving here on highway AIA or coming down by train, which stopped right in the center of town. “I got a lot of attention in first grade for my drawings. I used to stay in during recess to draw. I grew out of art –or so I thought until I graduated from Quaker boarding school in Bucks County and entered Ohio Wesleyan. It would be sixteen years before I was coaxed into taking another art class. It was my ticket to ride.” Doug graduated Ohio Wesleyan University in 1981 with a major in Fine Arts. After graduation, however, Doug decided he wasn’t cut out to be a starving artist. He taught school for a while in Atlanta, and dabbled in film and advertising. He even worked for his father. Of those years, Doug says: “My Dad was a finance guy, a titan! He loved playing golf and buying businesses. “My father and brother had moved to Bradenton and convinced me to try an orange grove. They had been doing it successfully for almost 5 years, so I came down and tried it. We had two groves, one in Ona, and the other in Myaaka City. I liked the independence.” Today, Doug and his brother divide the chores at the Myaaka

City grove, spraying, irrigating, and surviving freezes and diseases; mostly getting the harvest ready for those two paychecks a year. When in his mid-40’s, Doug met his wife, Roni. She was working at Write-On Sarasota, the stationary store where he ordered the invitation for his parent’s 50th Anniversary Surprise Party. It was a first marriage for both, and before long an amazing daughter was born. It was Katty, now 5, who just graduated from First Presbyterian Preschool and is headed for St. Martha Catholic School. The Days lived in a Condo on Palm Ave until Katty was 4. Then they began to question raising their child in a box. “My wife dragged me kicking and screaming to The Landings,” says Doug. “This one house just jumped out to us. It’s at the south end of The Landings, a little suburban dream.” It helped that Roni and Doug both love to play tennis. Doug considers himself one lucky guy. “I got married, had a kid, and now I’ve got the white picket fence in The Landings.” Doug’s pragmatic energy will certainly be of service to the community.

Birkenstock & More

Dressed in shorts and short sleeved shirt, Bob Stein, The Landings Eagle publisher, is easily mistaken for a wayward snowbird fresh off some nearby golf course. Some attending the recent Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony at TPC Prestancia recently can be excused if they jumped to that conclusion when he showed up in his trademark “Florida casual” attire. But once the assembled chamber members recognized him they understood. That’s jus t Bob . The energet i c publisher of the Siesta Sand left the buttoned down corporate world years ago. He’s living on “island time” now, even if there seldom seems to be enough of it to get to everything he wants to each day. Even at the awards dinner he was still on the job, taking pictures, talking to friends, looking for news leads for the next edition of one of the newspapers he publishes with his wife and business partner Emy. His eyes light up when ta lk ing about the la tes t happenings on the island. “Somebody said they saw a crocodile in the Grand Canal,” he says. “Can you believe it?” Then there’s the recent report of a rave party – clothing optional – at the pavilion after the drum circle broke up on a recent Sunday evening. Cell phone videos of the revelry prompted Stein to quip, “What happens on the Key doesn’t always stay on the Key.” “There’s no such thing as small news in a small town,” he says. Running down the latest rumor is one of his greatest joys. It shows in the boyish grin that makes him appear younger than his sixty years. But the news this evening at the awards dinner would take Stein totally by surprise. “It had been a long day and I was getting tired and thinking of cutting out early,” he said in a recent interview. “But I’d given my camera to

Trish Johnson-Ivey (of Fresh PR & Marketing) to take some pictures. But now she’s up front, presenting an award, so I had to wait until she finished.” So Stein takes a seat. Then something Ivey says catches his ear. “If you’ve seen this person around town, always in shorts, you might think he’s a tourist but in fact he’s hard at work; he’s always on the move. He’s heavily involved with almost every civic group on Siesta Key…” Uh-oh, Stein thinks to himself, slowly realizing where this is going amid chuckles and glances his way from the audience. “I take great pleasure in presenting the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the year award to Siesta resident, Bob Stein from Island Visitor Publishing,” The normally effusive Bob Stein was caught off guard, r e n d e r e d m o m e n t a r i l y speechless, by the spotlight now fixed squarely on him. Later, after hearing he had nearly bugged out before receiving the award, Chamber Executive Director Debra Lyn-Schmitz joked: “He wouldn’t have made it to the door. I would have tackled him before he got near it!” She said the qualities the chamber looks for in the award winner include community involvement and chamber activity. But beyond that, there’s something more. “The chamber wants the person who best represents the spirit of Siesta Key,” she explained. That spirit clearly animates Stein. He loves living and working on the Key, saying he first came under its spell in 2007 while still caught up in the corporate grind he is now so grateful to have left behind. “I was working for Journal Communications (parent company of The Milwaukee Journal) at the time” he said over lunch at the Alpine Steakhouse on the South Trail.

“They owned the Pelican Press then as well as some other publications in the area. I would come by in my role as Operations Director for their Community Publishing Group.” The Pelican’s office was located near the Village. In a Siesta minute – island time – Stein was hooked. “From my first trip I thought: what a great place this must be to live and work.” In 2010, the Steins bought a home on the Key, at the same time they purchased a small publication, Island Visitor (The Map Paper) which serviced the Key since 1989. But as fate would have it, living and working on Siesta would have to wait. The couple had finally left the cold winters of Wisconsin behind, but they ended up in Ft. Myers, not Siesta, where Stein took a job with Seabreeze Communications close to a vacation property they owned on Fort Myers Beach. Bob had originally accepted a job as the Ad Director for Breeze Newspapers in Fort Myers/Cape Coral. “I showed up for work and lasted three days. I walked away from a large salary because our views differed on key items and I realized it was more gratifying to work for myself again,” Stein explained. “Shortly after we purchased Island Visitor and our home, I met Terry Reid, owner of Seabreeze Communications through a mutual friend,” Stein continued. “He reminded me of an older version of myself with a great operation consisting of 29 monthly papers on the west coast and 20 papers on the east coast in the Palm Beach, Jupiter area. I told Terry I’d work for him as GM for two years. No contracts, just a gentleman’s handshake was all it took. “After the two years were up, I moved down to Siesta Key permanently and began to develop what we purchased

earlier,” said Stein. “Prior to that time, my wife and I worked Siesta on weekends, thinking we’d eventually move here permanently when the time was right,” Stein said. The time was right when Dr. Beach named Siesta Key the No. 1 Beach in the US. We decided to expand the quarterly paper to a monthly giving birth to Siesta Sand.” The Island Visitor paper was a modest start, but it gave them a beachhead on the island. Meanwhile, Stein had an idea of developing a mini version of Seabreeze. Island Visitor Publishing LLC acquired publishing The Landings Eagle, Del Tura Tower and the Tara Woods Columns. “We publish their news, hyper-local news. I laugh when I hear I can read it online. Someone needs to write this or it won’t be there for you to read it,” Stein laughs. Stein’s knowledge of the newspaper industry was based on a model he had developed in the 1980s in Wisconsin that eventually grew into a successful group of Newspapers/Shoppers that blanketed the suburbs and heart of the City of Milwaukee with a combined circulation of 135,000. “Every grocery store in the Milwaukee market ran their ad in my papers and I published them on Sundays against the daily newspaper, their strongest paper.” Stein remarked. T h o m s o n N e w s p a p e r Group took note of his success, buying Stein’s group in 1995. Thomson approached Stein at a newspaper conference. “They told me they wanted to buy me, I said it wasn’t for sale and 6 weeks later it was theirs”. After the sale it felt like I just witnessed the death of a family member. I built this operation from scratch, 28 full-time employees, plus countless part-timers, lifetime business friends etc. gone!” Stein explained

But since then, aside from owning and managing rental properties, building spec homes, Stein had missed the excitement and freedom of working for himself in this industry. Stein currently prints 14,850 copies of Siesta Sand and The Landings Eagle each month, mailing copies to homeowners as well. “It’s more expensive, but it’s the right way to go in an area like this,” he explains. “So many people with homes here are away in the summer or travel a lot. They don’t want papers piling up, which is what you get with free papers thrown on driveways.” So far the new venture has worked out well for the couple. Siesta Sand has been well received for its focus on the Key. Both Bob and Emy

work hard, but they are grateful to now work for themselves. And they’ve finally realized that dream of living and working on Siesta Key. Being named Business Person of the Year? That’s a true honor, says Stein. But living on island time…That’s an award that comes each and every day. “Siesta is a small town,” he says. “This is my hometown now and I want to make sure it’s looked after to keep that small town feel.” And best of all? “I get to wear shorts

and sandals to work every day,” he says with a smile. “What could be better than that?” Siesta Key Resident Bob Stein is currently the 1st Vice President of the Siesta Key Association chairing the Siesta Promenade development along with chairing the land usage once the Waste Water Treatment Plant is retired. Stein also is a board member of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, chaired the development and sales for the new in-house Visitors Guide, tear off maps and folding maps. It does not stop there, he is also on the board of the Siesta Key Village Association and attends their monthly meetings.

It’s our Summer Season which seems to last from May 15th to Octo-ber 15th and it’s a good time to head out on trips and vacations or try to escape the heat.

Many things have to be considered and plans have to be made but most of us don’t consider that minor aches and bothers can become major problems while away from home, especially on cruises and when out of the USA.

Make sure those little tooth things you’ve ignored or dealt with are taken care of before you leave. If you have a spare denture - take it. Consult with your dentists for their opinion of what can wait and what shouldn’t.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t wait until the last moment.

Let’s work toward a truly happy and healthy vacation season.

It’s up to you!

By the time you are reading this , we should be ful ly operational in our newly renovated Tennis Pro Shop. Even though we enjoyed our time in our temporary office in the multipurpose room of the Fitness Center, we are all thrilled to be back in the Pro Shop. For those that haven’t

seen the completed project yet, please stop by when you get a chance. I think you will be impressed with the new setup. The other major capital project for the 2015 calendar year will begin in early June. We are replacing all of the tennis court fencing. The overall project is expected to take roughly five weeks. Two courts at a time will be offline which will put court times at a premium. I realize there is less activity on the courts this time of year but I still strongly suggest members call in advance for morning and afternoon reservations. Exercise Class Update - Even though summer is here, we are still running some of the exercise

classes. Jazzercise is off until November; however, Zumba and yoga will continue through the summer as long as there are enough students to hold the class. Zumba is Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM. The traditional Yoga classes with Hilda Ely are Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:15 AM. We have added an additional Yoga class on Friday mornings with Susan Dierksen. Although the details aren’t finalized yet, there is a strong possibility that Verna Ferris from Dance Discovery may be conducting two classes a week at The Landings. I will advertise her class information as soon as I can. Joe still has his cardio tennis clinics three times a week on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM and Wednesday & Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM. Please call the Tennis Pro Shop at 923-3886 if you have questions about any activities at the Club. Although most of these events are still some time away, please mark your calendars for the following upcoming functions: Joe’s Wimbledon & Whites tennis round robin is July 4th. The annual Labor Day BBQ is scheduled for September 1st. The final social event of the year is the Holiday Dinner Dance that takes place December 12th.

|Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner

Our members and veterans celebrated Memorial Day with our usual good turnout for the barbecue and camaraderie. Pictures of the event are shown on the next page. As you read this, we are close to finishing the move into the remodeled Pro Shop from the multi-purpose room. Rudy

Blohm, our project manager for this work, will see it when he gets back from Europe in late June.

The remaining major project for this year is the replacement of our court fences, which will begin in early June. Alice has headed north and I wish her a healthy and happy summer, and we look forward to her return in the fall. Gary will be here when he isn’t in Paris. For those of you who are here year-round, I hope you make good use of our relatively idle facilities and enjoy whatever vacation plans you have.

Blooming this month: QUESTION: We have seen some large trees which have beautiful purple flower clusters . They are spectacular – what are they? ANSWER: You are describing the Jacaranda Tree [Jacaranda mimosifolia]. It is in full bloom now and it is a beautiful specimen tree, needing a large yard. Those flower clusters can be over a foot long and contain hundreds of individual flowers. After the blooms are done, the fine foliage fills in and creates a lovely dappled shade canopy. The sight of a Jacaranda Tree in full bloom , against a gorgeous blue summer sky with a white cloud for contrast, is a sight you will remember for a long time!

Stafford Shaddy attains Eagle Scout rank Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. A Scout who attains this rank is called an Eagle Scout or Eagle. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men. According to Shaddy, “For my project, I worked with the Little Pilgrim Preschool to build a truck themed sandbox in their playground. Little Pilgrim Preschool is located at the First Congregational Church of Christ, where our Troop 895 meets. After years visiting the church and playground for various Boy Scout activities it felt good being able to make an impact so close to home. My project would not have been possible without the help and contributions of Charlie Campbell, Thomas Hull of Autobahn Express, my

parents and my friends: Jake, Connor, Alex D., and Allison.” Proud parents are Tara Lamb and Bill Shaddy. Stafford is a 2015 Pine View School grad and will be attending Florida State University.

Stolen bicycles recovered at a cost Mike Lewis, co-owner of Siesta Sports Rentals, has had bicycles stolen over the past 10 years. But typically he never sees the stolen bikes again. When three bicycles were stolen sometime overnight on April 7, however, the outcome turned out to be different. The three brand-new Trek hybrid bicycles were stolen from vacationers who had rented them, but the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office found the bikes. Deputies had discovered the bikes at two different Sarasota pawn shops after checking serial numbers in the pawn-shop database. “The police phoned us and said ‘we think we have your stolen bikes,’” Lewis said. Deputies then worked with Lewis to compare serial numbers to confirm the bicycles were in fact the stolen ones. A deputy then interviewed Robert Joseph Bennett Jr., 36, of Siesta Key, and after admitting to stealing the bicycles, Bennett was

charged with dealing in stolen property and providing false information to a pawn broker. “In this case, the police did a good job,” Lewis said. Yet the good news ended with the good police work. When it came to retrieving the bicycles, Lewis encountered an obstacle. Two separate pawn shops told him he would have to pay the two pawn shops a total of $275 to get the stolen bicycles back. Deputies told Lewis that under Florida law, pawn shops have the right to request money from the rightful owner of stolen items before giving the items back. That is unless a judge orders them to return the items. Most know of laws that prevent pawn shops from dealing in stolen goods. But Florida Statue 539 actually protects the pawn shop if a good is stolen. News of the law confounded Lewis. The statue—which Lewis contends was likely created in

part at the urging of the pawn-shop lobby—absolves pawn shops of the responsibility of properly vetting goods that may be stolen. In theory, the shop can buy and sell stolen items with impunity because the law is on their side. “They are in a no-lose situation,” Lewis told Siesta Sand. “If they buy something stolen, it’s your problem. You can come by and buy it back from them.” L e w i s i s n ’ t t h e o n l y local theft victim who has encountered this statue. A Longboat Key resident who had his $2,000 racing bike stolen and recovered last year was asked to pay $100 to retrieve the bicycle from a pawn shop, according to a July, 2014 ABC 7 news article. http://www.mysuncoast.com/news/local/florida-law-permits-pawn-shops-to-request-money-for-stolen/article_745a30ea-0ebd-11e4-8653-0017a43b2370.html The Siesta Sports Rental

bikes were stolen April 7 from the Avenida De Mayo rental home where the vacationers who had rented the bikes were staying. According to the Sarasota County Probable Cause Affidavit, “Sometime in the overnight hours of 4/7/15 the bicycles went missing from the garage… the garage was left unsecured overnight.” A search of the pawn database revealed that Bennett had pawned a total of four bikes, including another bike, a Trek 3500 mountain bike, that

were stolen from the garage. The bikes were sold to Gold Coast Pawn, located at 3210 Clark Road, and Presidential Pawn, located at 1616 N Washington Blvd, Sarasota. According to the arrest report, “[A deputy] located the defendant at his residence and conducted a noncustodial interview, outside in his front yard. He denied stealing the bicycles, but when confronted with the evidence, he admitted to stealing four bicycles from the open garage.”

If you are looking for real handmade chocolates, consider shopping at Abel’s Ice Cream. They offer the Sweet Shop USA brand of quality handmade chocolate truffles in a variety of flavors. Sweet Shop USA has developed recipes for a velvet-soft center without the course, grainy mouth feel. The centers are made of chocolate liquor, real butter and fresh whipping cream. Each center is hand-formed and hand-dipped in coatings of chocolate then personally signed or decorated by the dipper to identify the piece. Quality

chocolates should accomplish certain requirements when tasted 1) it should break down immediately 2) there should not be a waxy or grainy feel on the roof of your mouth and 3) when you are finished with a piece, the taste in your mouth should not change. Abel’s Ice Cream displays their chocolates in a humidity controlled refrigerated cabinet as recommended by Sweet Shop USA to ensure freshness. At the request of many customers, a new flavor of ice cream has been added, Salty Caramel ice cream with a salty caramel

ribbon and salty roasted peanuts….. Yummo and addictive. 24 THE LANDINGS EAGLE June 2015

The pursuit of what may be Mission Impossible--namely, finding extraterrestrial Intelligent life--is seeking new pastures for exploration in outer space .Given that some impatient humans yearn to find “company” out there, some scientists are now giving up on finding ETs within our Solar System or even in our Milky Way Galaxy. Instead, according to the London Economist, the search for outer space aliens is now being focused on other, distant galaxies beyond our spiraled galaxy.. ET hunters now reason that if any advanced extraterrestrial civilizations were ever present in our galaxy in the past, they would have long since made themselves known. Some scientists guess that habitable planets may have been around for over 10 billion years. This is almost twice the time it took for life to develop on our “little blue dot,” as pop-sci astronomer Carl Sagan once characterized our allegedly “insignificant” cosmic home. It follows, writes the Economist, that a space-faring civilization, “relying on craft flying even far below the speed of light, would be able to colonize throughout the entire galaxy (where that was possible) within a few hundred million years.” This means that if intelligent life, or technologically capable life forms, had emerged elsewhere in the Milky Way, they would probably have come into view long ago.” Yet evidently they did not emerge unless you believe in the existence of UFOs with aliens aboard. This new version, of course, omits the possibility that such an advanced civilization would necessarily make itself known. Some speculate that such advanced ETs might disguise their presence. Hence, the suspicion--in my opinion, farfetched and illusory--that so-called UFOs represent attempts by “aliens” to do recon against us but without our being aware of it. Some

UFO enthusiasts, speaking on some “science” telecast, will even attribute the huge meteor that crashed in Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February 2013, to a UFO. However, for a minority of scientists [Note: minorities of scientific opinion are not always “wrong” as proved by the cases of Pasteur, Einstein, the modernizers of “real number” mathematics used in the Calculus, and other loners] Earth’s development of intelligent life may have been either a miracle (in the religious sense) or a very rare accident (in the nonreligious sense, as proposed by Nobel Laureate biologist, Jacques Monod). This “rare” school of thought on the possible Uniqueness of human life on Earth is based on the study of what is known about the chancy earliest development of complex life forms on our planet. In the words of such reputable scientists as Monod, Shklovsky, Jeans, Eddington, Bohr, Einstein, and others (who are never quoted in this respect in gung-ho pop-sci magazines), life emerged under extremely special, contingency-loaded, “well-timed” conditions. Not even the huge numbers of possible Sun-like stars or planets bearing superficial Earth characteristics can make up for the unusual sequence of events that produced life on our planet. Not only that, the parameters of how the transition was made from lifeless inorganic material (“chemicals”) to living protoplasm is a huge, unsolved Unknown. No one understands how this essential transformation took place. Nor has science been able to replicate it. Reputable scientists like the geologist and the astronomer respectively Dr. Peter D. Ward and Donald Brownlee of the University of Washington note in their book Rare Earth how marginal and accidental all this was. Not only that, they

point out that life began on our planet under extremely unfavorable conditions of outer space. IT is rampant with interplanetary and cometary fragment collisions, lethal cosmic rays, “suns” that do not produce the right life-making elements, and so on. Above all, it is totally baffling how Earth’s biosphere, once formed, managed to survive under such adverse conditions. The rare events and contingencies, as catalogued by Drs. Ward and Brownlee, that saved our world from extinction proved to be very fortunate for our planet sand perhaps supremely rare even Universe-wide. For their part, pop-sci dismisses such causative factors. These popularizing scientists claim that given “so many billions of Sun-like stars,” some are “inevitably bound” to produce planets with life-supporting biospheres. Yet does that inevitabilist assumption follow logically and statistically? Suppose you have all the materials and parts, a big assumption, to make, say, a modern, supersonic fighter-bomber with thousands of working parts (on the analogy of the even more complex parts and structure of a human cell or an RNA or DNA gene alone). Even if you had plenty of the components and enough time, would all those parts “inevitably assemble themselves” into complex organisms let alone highly vulnerable mammals? Obviously not. Sheer numbers and length of time mean nothing. either statistically or qualitatively. According to Ward and Brownlee and some other scientists, Earth went through a number of evidently unique phases. At times, the very extinction of all primitive microbic life on our planet (whose origins are unknown) lay in the balance. But then, s e r i a l l y , a n a c c i d e n t a l , i n t e r v e n i n g g e o l o g i c a l event would overcome the

challenge. This happened, for instance, when an iced-up, “snowball Earth” somehow transitioned by accident (via internal volcanic action) into a green, verdant Earth. Or when greenhouse gases nearly snuffed out life but were gobbled up by other processes (for details, see Ward and Brownlee’s book, available at Amazon.com). The Bottom Line is that no one knows, despite ET babble, whether ET has developed elsewhere beyond Earth, or even if it could develop. If it is ever proved that it has evolved elsewhere, many of us would be among the first to welcome the advent of the existence of another world (using the word “world” literally). Meanwhile, though, isn’t it better to concentrate on preserving what we have here rather than dwelling o n t h e u n p r o v e n , s o -

called “inevitability” of life elsewhere? Too, ironically speaking, isn’t intelligent life on Earth a big enough problem let alone looking for it in the hostile reaches of space? :-) I think writers who traffic in the “inevitability of ET,” even well-meaning scientific explorers of it, go about their Mission too dogmatically. They cater to those natural, pent-up human urges to find company in outer space. Theirs is a kind of terrestrial narcissism that compulsively seeks copies of Earth’s possibly unique experience. This is odd since humans are all too familiar with uniqueness of many types. It crops up everywhere. Why not in outer space? That we might be alone--i.e., that we are unique humanoids--seems to terrify some people.

For more than 44 years, the Siesta Market has operated on the island, one of two grocery stores on Siesta Key, and for more than 50 years, the Morton family has either owned or worked with Morton’s Gourmet Market on Osprey Avenue. But soon, those two richly historic and beloved institutions will become one. Siesta Market owners, brothers Vincent and Peter Messina, are retiring from the business, which would have left a big grocery vacancy at 205 Canal Road, right in the heart of Siesta Village. Luckily, Todd Morton and his father Eddie stepped in with plans to transform the building, which was bought by investor Christopher J. Brown last November for $2.8 million, into Morton’s Siesta Market. The Morton’s, like the Messinas, know a little bit about the grocery business. “My grandfather had worked for Marable’s, and then bought it in 1969,” Todd Morton said. “In the 70s, he changed the name to Morton’s Market and ran it with my dad (Eddie) until 1997, when they sold it to Epicurean Life. But

in 2007, my father and I bought it back.” Since then, the name of the market on the corner of Osprey and Hillview Avenues has been changed to Morton’s Gourmet Market, and is a full-service specialty food store, offering a wide variety of foods and products. There’s a bakery and coffee shop, prime meat and seafood selection, “from scratch” prepared meals, an extensive fine wine selection, gift baskets, gourmet groceries, a catering department and a very popular deli. The deli also provides a large portion of the current business at the Siesta Market, and Morton says that after his family takes it over, it is expected to continue to do so. “The Siesta Market has been there a long time, and we just want to update it and be able to offer a lot more of our prepared foods,” he said. “Our primary focus will be on the deli that exists there, and because the store is a smaller space than we have at our location now (about 4,000 square feet smaller), we’re going to try to

have a sampling of what we have here. We just won’t have as many departments.” While Morton’s Gourmet Market, which will remain open as the store’s flagship location, has an upscale atmosphere, Morton said it’s important to him and his father to keep the casual, beachy feel of the Siesta Market. After the Morton’s take over the space, the store will remain open while some updates are being made. But by early fall, the big restoration plans will begin. Morton said they’re not quite sure how extensive those plans will be. “We’re in the process of meeting with store designers to come up with the look that we want,” he said. “The timing of when the restoration begins and ends depends on a lot of different things.” The only other grocer on the island is the Crescent Beach Grocery, located on the southern end, just south of Stickney Point Road, which delivers groceries all over the island. It’s unlikely, though, that Siesta

Key residents and tourists will have to go very long without a market on the northern end of the Key, since the Morton’s want to keep the closure of the store to a minimum. As upset as many area residents were to hear that the Siesta Market owners were retiring, most seemed happy that the space would be taken over by a family who has such longtime ties to both the area and the grocery business. Rebecca Kremer, who lives just off the Key, and frequents the Siesta Market, said that she believed Morton’s Siesta Market would be a good fit. “I love Siesta Market, but I also like the Morton’s Market, too,” she said. “If they can bring some of their foods like the prepared

salads and rotisserie chicken over to the new store, I won’t have to go anywhere else to shop.” Todd Morton said that the imminent opening of the new store is also causing quite a buzz among his Osprey Avenue staff, some of whom will make the move to Morton’s Siesta Market. “Our staff here is really excited,” he said. “We’re also happy that we will be able to retain much of the current staff at the Siesta Market as well.” Morton’s Gourmet Market is at 1924 South Osprey Avenue in Sarasota, and the new Morton’s Siesta Market is at 205 Canal Road on Siesta Key. You can visit Northeast Thailand simply by going to the South Trail in Sarasota. Isan Thai Restaurant offers traditional Thai food of the northeast region of Thailand bordering Cambodia and Laos known as Isan. Hailing from Sisaket province, known for its traditional methods of rice farming, owner P’Koong brings her home cooking to Sarasota along with her staff of friendly Thai ladies. Although Northeast Thai dishes can be spicy, as are many dishes from that part of the world, this restaurant’s cuisine seems lighter and packed with a bit more flavor than most other Asian restaurants. That statement has to be couched with a dining tip: order the food mild with some of the fiery sauce on the side to avoid any mouth searing. Isan Thai, at 5758 S. Tamiami Trail, just south of Phillippi Mansion, serves lunch and d inner . Menu i tems are similar on either menu, with a more extensive dinner menu featuring a large number of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Popular appetizers include Golden Triangle ($4.95) a ground chicken, potato, and Thai spice blend wrapped in rice paper and served with sweet and sour dip. Also special for a starter is Sai Aour, a home-made sausage, hearty and lightly spiced at $5.95. Soups are a Southeast Asia dining mainstay. At Isan Thai, popular soups are the Tom Yum Goong, ($4.95), a hot and sour soup with shrimp, onion,

raw mushrooms, cilantro and Thai basil, as well as the Noodle Soup with rice noodles with chicken or pork, bean sprouts and Thai basil. The latter soup is $4.95 for lunch, with a heartier portion available at dinner for $8.95 for chicken, $9.95 for pork. The ladies of Isan offer noodle dishes inc luding Drunken Noodles prepared with fresh Thai basil and sweet soy sauce as well as stir-fry rice dishes like Phad Phak Ruam Mit with a variety of fresh vegetables and spices, served with your choice of protein. Prices: chicken, pork, beef, tofu, or vegetable specials are $7.95 for lunch, $11.95 dinner; shrimp, scallop, or calamari is $8.95 lunch, $14.95 dinner; and a seafood combo at $10.95 lunch, $17.95 dinner. A popular special with diners at the above prices is Pad Thai with its rice noodles sautéed with egg, bean sprouts, ground peanuts, and scallions. Isan Thai Chef’s specials include Crispy Duck with a choice of sweet chili sauce, ginger sauce, fresh garlic chili sauce, or Panang sauce ($18.95). Try Crying Tiger, a chargrilled boneless Ribeye seasoned with roasted rice powder served with Green Curry Fr ied Rice and Asparagus (21.95). Popular curry dishes include Red Curry, Green Curry (with Thai eggplant) and Yellow curry prepared with vegetables and coconut milk. For the adventurous diner, try their Hungley Curry, a rich creamy spicy curry prepared with fresh ginger and cubed pork

($12.95) or Kao Soi, a Northern style creamy sweet curry made with crispy egg noodles, fresh shallots, and cilantro with your choice of protein. Seafood offerings include Bplaa Rad Prik, Red Snapper (whole or filet) with a basil chili sauce, served with steamed vegetables and rice. Ever popular is Amazing Salmon, pan fried salmon filet served with a peanut sauce, cabbage, and Tum Yum Fried Rice. With most of the world’s jasmine rice harvested in Thailand, rice dishes are featured at Isan Thai. Many of the chef’s dinner specials include a hearty helping of the fragrant rice. I s a n T h a i c a t e r s t o vegetarians with a medley of appetizer, salad, and entrée courses. Isan Thai has one of the most extensive beer menus seen outside of a specialty brew pub. Plan to sip your way across the world, with Thai, Japanese, Belgium, and other brews, a long list of craft beers also from around the world, plus more traditional lagers. There is also a large wine list. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. A newly expanded dining area with hand carved tables can accommodate larger parties. Dinner is served from Noon until to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are strongly recommended. More information about the restaurant is available at www.isanthairestaurant.com or by calling 941-923-1232.

As is Thai tradition, Buddhist monks performed a blessing for the opening of the new dining room. A morning ceremony took place with monks

chanting then an offering of food by the guests. The Blessing was well attended and included 12 monks from different Thai temples.

The newlyexpanded dining area with carved

tables canaccommodate larger

parties.
