ViTSiDet Vidensskabende Tværfaglige SiddestillingsnetværkThe Interdisciplinary Evidence Generating Network for Seating

• Around 30 members

• Bridging profession and organization

• OTs and PTs specialized in seating, prosthetists and orthotists, sales consultants from suppliers of assistive technology

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

The objective of ViTSi

• “…collect, develop and create knowledge in Denmark on seating issues in relation to people sitting in a wheelchair”

• Going into depth generates development

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Study groups in ViTSiEstablished study groups• Corsets for children• ICF • Electronic pressure mapping • Improving the quality of the seating analysis• Tone disorders – neuro dynamics • Pelvic stabilization • Terminology• Dissemination of seating issues

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

ViTSi methods

• Case studies • Literature search• Observations • Interviews• Clinical measuring • Development of guidelines

Landing from a standing hoist

Group members:• Conni Schmidt, PT, seating specialist• Helle Dreier, OT, seating specialist• Helle Buggeskov, PT, sales consultant• Hanne Melton Leino, PT, seating specialist• Jørgen Alnor, PT, sales consultant• Mary Petersen, PT, area consultant

Focus points of the group

• Seating

• Seating related pressure ulcers

• Dissemination

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

First objective

Dissemination on the sitting position of wheelchair users to the staff in institutions.

• Research problem: How do we construct a teaching course on sitting position to the educational and care giving staff so that knowledge can be used in practice?

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Final project• A survey project with the objective to

discover, which factors in connection with the use of a standing hoist, that influence the quality of the sitting position.

• The aim is to achieve and disseminate evidence based knowledge, to ensure and enhance the assumption of the sitting position by use of a standing hoist.

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Final objective

• Point out the central focus points• Assumption of the sitting position by use of a

standing hoist• Dissemination of knowledge to transfer

instructors and therapists

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Hypothesises

• The standing is first and foremost seen as a tool for the working environment

• There is no focus on landing in the chair• The wheelchair user doesn’t have the physical

prerequisites to be transferred with a standing hoist

Design5 cases: • Observation of the transfer process• Interview of the citizen and the care giver• Data processing by clinical reasoning,

uncovering of focus points• Dissemination project for transfer instructors

Supplementary methodsLiterature review:

– Instructions in the use of standing hoists– Theory on seating– Theory on interview– Theory on dissemination

5 casesCitizens:

• Thoracic kyphosis + “Stiff legs”• Hemiplegic + Hip prosthesis bilateral • Hemiplegic• Hemiplegic• Multiple sclerosis

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

5 casesCare givers:

• Social and health care helper• Social and health care helper• Social and health care assistant• Transfer instructor• Nursing assistant

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

ObservationsObservation guide + video

• Mostly verbal guiding – “push your behind backwards”

• The citizens get little or no encouragement to correct their sitting position

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

InterviewsThe care giver is very aware of• The prerequisites of the citizen• The correct use of hoist and sling• The citizen pushing the behind backwardsCitizen’s perception• It is easy• I get an opportunity to be active• I can correct my position my self

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Data processing

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Focus points

• Change of position from standing to sitting• Verbal guiding supplemented with physical

guiding• The guideposts of the sitting position (individual)• Correction of the sitting position

• The standing hoist is not training equipment

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

The further courseDissemination project

• Produce a dissemination concept for care givers

• Prepare an instruction in the use of a standing hoist

• Bachelor project

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Dissemination concept

2 persons (from special advisory centres) plan to hold training sessions

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Instruction

• First planned as a printed information on the standing hoist

• The future is electronic QR-codes

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

QR-codes

Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Bachelor project

Focus on • Methodology of data collection (now that we

know the focus points!)• The changing of position in the landing

We have contact with OT schools
