8/2/2019 Landfill Brochure IGS - Final
1/2
BACKGROUND
There is growing awareness among the general public
as well as the authorities about healthy management
of solid wastes. Generated solid waste can be
municipal solid waste or hazardous waste or e waste
depending upon the source. Burgeoning population
growth and increase in the industrial production also
resulted in the greater amount of solid waste
generation. The current practice of indiscriminate
disposal of waste in land and water is adversely
affecting the society both economically and
environmentally. The costs of remediation or cleanup
of hazardous wastes contaminated sites are
astronomical. Engineered landfill is one of the end-
of-pipe methods, which provides sustainable solution.
In addition to the construction, there are operational
problems associated with landfills which are highly
concern to the public. Examples of these problems
include landfill gas and leachate migration that can
result in odors, groundwater contamination, escape
and ignition of greenhouse and combustible gases.
The most important factors that ensure success
landfill are containment of the leachate and
managing the gas and odour. Hence to address this
issue, Indian Geotechnical Society, Chennai Chapter
proposed to conduct this one day practical oriented
national workshop on Landfill design and
construction. Good practice in planning, design, implementation and management will result in better
long-term performance of landfills. This workshop
provides ways and means with complete practical
aspects that needs to be considered for the design
and construction of landfill.
WORKSHOP BENEFITS
Understand the landfill siting and itsimportance.
Understand the geoenvironmental aspects oflandfill liner construction and its field
evaluation.
Expose to the procedures for design andconstruction of landfill.
Apply the knowledge of latest practice in thelandfill construction.
Understand the importance of quality controland checks during the landfill liner construction
in order to achieve geosustainability.
Introduction to carbon sequestration, carboncredits and carbon trading in engineered solid
waste landfill.
Eminent personalities from Industry and Academy will
deliver lectures on the above aspects.

About Indian Geotechnical Society,
Chennai Chapter
Madras Chapter of Indian Geotechnical Society was
formed in the year 1987 and later renamed as
Chennai Chapter. The chapter has been organizing
seminars, workshop and discourses every year since
then. The emphasis in these seminars has been
towards field practices and budding and practicing
engineers were encouraged to actively participate in
the deliberations of these programmes. Regular
technical lectures are also being arranged by the
Chapter for the benefit of its members and student
community. The Chennai chapter organized Indian
Geotechnical Conferences in the year 1996 and
2006. The chapter also contributed immensely to the
revision of IS codes related to Geotechnical
activities. The chapter has about one thousand
members.
