Explore the era that put Åland on the world map, an era that lasted longer in this island province than anywhere else. With the album of collector’s sheets you learn more about the history of each ship and obtain the sailing ship stamps in first day cancelled condition. Authored by a distin-guished expert, Hanna Hagmark-Cooper, Director of Åland Maritime Museum, all texts are translated into English, Finnish and German. The reputable museum also supplied all illustrations. Please note that collector’s sheets are sold on standing

order subscription only. The limited edition is 1500.

Your first delivery includes the album hold-ing the 2015-2017 collector’s sheets. Future collector’s sheets will follow automatically for you to insert in the album. Comprising a total of 12 stamps and 24 collector’s sheets, the series is now halfway through and will be concluded in 2020. Order on page 14.

LOVELY ORCHIDS ON FRANKING LABELS T H E N E W franking labels show lesser butterfly orchid (Platanthera bifolia), heath spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata), fly orchid (Ophrys insectifera) and creeping ladies tresses (Goodyera repens).

L E S S E R B U T T E R F LY O R C H I D and heath spotted orchid are rather com-mon species in Åland. They flower in June-July. The night-scented flowers of the lesser butterfly orchid are white with a yellow tint. It thrives in lush forests and meadows. The heath spotted orchid with light purple flowers grows in bog and pine forests.

C R E E P I N G L A D I E S T R E S S E S is not quite as common, however, not a pro-tected species in Åland. It is generally found in the mossy undergrowth of pine forests and blossoms in July-August with white, downy flowers. Fly orchid, on the other hand, is a both rare and protected species, growing in calcareous, moist soil. Appear-ing from June to July, its peculiar flowers resemble a female sphecidae, the only type of wasp to pollinate this species.

On 13 March, Åland Post launches a new type of self-adhesive franking labels. The first series is a set of four types of lovely scented orchids that thrive in the calcareous Åland soil.

The first day cover and first day cancel both show a heath spotted orchid. When printed, each franking label is marked with the chosen value and a number identifying the printer used.

1 February sees part four of Åland Post’s sailing ships series.

Built in America, full-rigged frigate Albania

and schooner Atlas sailed under Åland

flag for a while.

AMERICANS IN ÅLAND SERVICET H E G R O W T H O F the Åland fleet in the early 1900s was mainly satisfied with secondhand tonnage. From 1880 to 1914, around 200 wooden vessels were procured to Åland. Large barques and frigates from Nova Scotia and Norway dominated.

B U I LT I N 18 8 4 I N S T J O H N , Canada, full-rigged frigate Albania was the largest wooden sailing vessel in Finland when imported to Åland in 1903. She had two captains during her time under Åland flag. Gustaf Erikson, later to become one of the greatest ship owners in Åland, was captain during her last three years. Already at the time of purchase, Albania was old and in need of repair and she turned out to be a bad deal. Arriving in leaking condition, she was sold in Rio de Janeiro in 1908. On the stamp, we see her heading south in hard

weather conditions in the Atlantic Ocean, perhaps navigated by artist Allan Palmer’s grand father, deck officer on Albania?

4 - M A S T E D S C H O O N E R Atlas was built for coastal trade in Bath, Maine, in 1908 and named Bertha L Downs. She was purchased in 1923 by a minor Åland shipping company headed by captain Arthur Andersson, who also commanded her until 1927. This vessel was more pros-perous, carrying timber in the Baltic and North Seas. Allan Palmer has illustrated the vessel sailing close-hauled on the North Sea on her way to England. In the background we even spot a British smack. Atlas was sold to Estonian shipowners in 1931 and Arthur Andersson’s company turned to steam ships.

The two sailing vessels at full sails adorn front and back of the first day cover. The first day cancel shows a sextant, an important navigational instrument at sea.

The special cancellation illustrates a caulking mallet. During construction and for maintenance it was used to hammer the caulk of hemp or flax into the joints between timber planks on the hull and decks to seal them.

Focus lies on Nordic species of fishes as the series of stamps from the Nordic postal administrations continues. Salmon has been of great importance to professional fishing in Åland. On 13 March, Åland Post issues a stamp flaunting a silvery Atlantic salmon.

SALMON FISHING IN ÅLANDT H E AT L A N T I C S A L M O N (salmo salar) is a silver coated species with X-shaped, black spots on its oblong, fusiform body. Resembling a sea trout, it is recog-nized by a more slender caudal peduncle, an incurved tailfin and a shorter set of jaws. The Baltic population of the Atlantic salmon mainly feeds on Baltic herring and fry, making its flesh white to pale yellow.

S A L M O N F I S H I N G has been a significant source of income for commercial Åland fishermen, above all in the 1960s and 1970s. The fishermen would combine net fishing of salmon with trawling of herring and sprat, but fishing boats were soon to be specialized. Featured on the first day cover is a boat especially constructed for salmon fishing by a local ship yard in Geta. I N T R O D U C E D I N T H E 19 8 0 S , the farming of salmon and rainbow trout

led to a decline in interest and value of wild salmon. In the early 1990s, salmon fishing was strictly limited and drift net fishing was prohibited in 2008. Åland commercial fishing of today comprises small-scale coastal and archipelago fishing concentrating on fresh water species and, to a lesser extent, on herring, salmon and cod. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland distributes the national fishing quotas between Åland and Finland in consultation with the Åland provincial government.

S W E D I S H A R T I S T Lars Sjööblom designed the stamp. Having designed many stamp motifs for the Swedish post, his most recent work for Åland Post was the engrav-ing for the 2012 Man at the Wheel stamp.

The first day cover shows a salmon fishing boat, typical to Åland. The original was built in the 1980s and the boat is still used for fishing. According to recent statistics, the Åland fleet of fishing boats consists of some 285 vessels. On the first day cancel we see the boat fishing salmon.
