IBERIAN WOLF WORKSHOP IN CULEBRAS

MOUNTAIN RANGE IN ZAMORA (SPAIN)

Day 1 VILLAR DE CIERVOSVilladeciervos, is located in the region of theCarballeda, in the northwest of the province of

Zamora, in the autonomous community of Castilla and Leon.

The sobriety and simplicity of rural architecture

are good excuses to stroll the streets andobserve carefully every single detail as the

balconies, doors, windows and shutters,knockers, locks, ornaments and a long list of

period details worth seeing.

The forestry and wildlife conservation supportsthe traditional uses of agriculture, tourism and

selective rational fully respect the current

lifestyle fawns and wolf.

Arrival at Villardeciervo.

During lunch our naturalist guide will brief us on our eco-tour which will let us peer into the best

kept secrets or the mountain and the animal that we have come in search of: the wolf (Canis lupussignatus), the most legendary of all Iberian animals.

Following the talk we will go out to one of the lupine territories in wait of a sighting. Our naturalist

will initiate us in the ecosystem of Sierra de la Culebra and the interaction between humans and thelocal wildlife. Accompanied by our local guide who specializes in this species, we shall wait until

twilight to observe the passing points, resting points and hunting grounds of one of the eight packs

of wolf which inhabit the mountains.

We return to the hotel and have dinner.

Day 2 CULEBRAS RANGE MOUNTAINS (SIERRA DE LA CULEBRA)We got up early, before dawn, and go out with vehiclesheading into the mountains for our first search of theIberian wolf. We are in the territory of two families of

wolf and we have to be wide awake. Search of the wolf isour goal, but without forgetting that Sierra de la Culebrais full of flora and fauna and it has an incredible

biodiversity.

At this time the adult members of the wolf families, are

hunting and cooperating in raising puppies. The cubsbegin to move with adults, but can still remain in venueshoping the rest of the clan returns from foraging. In the

meeting places, greatly increase the chances of observing these groups of wolfs. Near them, we will findthe deer with their new horns that give them a much

more powerful and elegant. The activity of these

animals, getting started in September when fighting forterritory and females. The mating season for deer,

depending on the weather, can last until mid-October. Itis easy to see raptors like golden eagles in their hunting

grounds. The deer can be seen in good weather and

nightfall, in forest clearings walking on tender leaves ofthe brambles and wild roses

Day 3 SIERRA DE LA CULEBRA BACKHOMEWe rise early again to look for the most active animals. Whilst we wait and observe we always have

viewing equipment and guides who can explain and interpret what we see. But the most important

thing we can do is remain silent and aware of all the movements we notice in our surroundings.

If our previous excursions have produced numerous wolf sightings then we can opt to look for

another characteristic carnivore, the otter, found in rivers and reservoirs in the mountains. We

return to the hotel for an early brunch and depart.
