He’s a photographer from New York City named Andrew Moore, and in the Sandhills of

Nebraska he photographed a tree with its gnarled roots sipping from a puddle of water.

“It was this great cedar tree that had died and come back to life many times. That was the idea for this project,” says Moore.

“This project” is an exploration of life along the 100th meridian, the line where a shift in the nature of the coun-try made it very difficult for home-steaders to farm or live the way they’d been living and farming farther east.

“It dawned on me when I got this image back that there were symbols of what people had been through, that harshness and the difficulty of settling the land,” says Moore.

It’s the task of describing visually the effort to settle the Great Plains that has brought Moore – who calls himself part dectective, part journalist, part fine artist, part landscape painter – back to Nebraska and the Dakotas. He’s paid special attention to the area along the 100th meridian.

“It’s such an important dividing line in

the middle of the country. It’s almost this psychological barrier that people cross over,” Moore says. “It’s hard for people to imagine what that line used to mean. It did demarcate a certain level of rainfall and that determined whether people could dry farm or not.”

Now, as with previous projects, Moore is working toward an exhibition of

photographs, and possibly a book. It usually takes him three or four years to gather enough images for a book. He’s been back to the Sandhills, and he’s visited North Dakota.

Moore ended up visiting with area historian Lonis Wendt in the Vivian area to see more of the 100th merid-ian. Wendt says it’s no surprise that a

photographer would be able to see and capture visually some big transitions that are associated with that line of longitude. The difference that meridian makes is apparent even on maps.

“In practical terms, it nearly splits the U.S. into east and west, and is com-monly accepted as the invisible line where the rainfall begins to rise as the weather fronts edge from west to east or southwest to northeast,” Wendt said. “Most maps show the gradual ‘greening up’ of geographical terrain as it moves easterly toward the Mississippi Val-ley, even including the Missouri River Valley.”

Moore said the country in south central South Dakota took him by surprise.

“It’s much more fertile than I thought it was going to be. It’s lush and green and planted and well tended to,” says Moore. “That kind of made things more difficult for me. The land is so valuable these days, there are very few of the old homesteaders claims or tree claims left right there. I had to go a little bit west of the line to find more remnants of the homesteading era. Some of those valleys outside of Murdo kind of took my breath away, kind of wide open and the fertile quality of the

Moore notes that it’s one of a number of puzzles he’s mulling in his mind as he thinks and reads about the 100th meridian.

“For the low density of population along that line, ex-cept when you get to Texas, the unemployment is low and the productivity is high. The wealth of the land for the number of people that are there is quite high. I see it in a way as an important part of the American economy and a very important part.”

For an urban photographer, it’s the chance to turn his lens on a different part of the American population, too, with different ways of thinking than he’s used to.

“I actually try not to talk about politics too much,” Moore says. “The people are kind of shockingly con-servative. I don’t mind it. I feel like an emissary from New York when I’m out there. Crossing over west of the Missouri, I know that from the pioneers there’s this really strong independent streak – do it yourself, don’t depend on the government.”

Moore has also seen regional differences as he visits the Plains states.

“People in Nebraska complain that South Dakota does a much better job of marketing itself. When people go to hunt pheasants, they go to South Da-kota and there are the Black Hills.”

Moore will visit the Plains states more in the future, perhaps making another stop in South Dakota later this year. He’s hoping a new friend from Nebraska who is a crop duster might revolutionize his work by giving him a lift by air to some places.

“I’m going to be making many more trips out there and there’s a lot of territory to cover.

The iconic images, that’s the thing I’m after. It

depends on finding the right place and everything being right,” he says. “I’m looking for interesting remnants of the homestead era, particularly lone trees that marked a homestead or a tree claim or a house that got built up over a soddy. It should not be too sentimental. I want to find things that connect the present with the past in a way that is not too laden

with clichés. That is one of my challenges. But I feel that this part of the country is the least commercially developed. So it allows this history to be preserved.”

Looking at his corn fi elds today, Keith Alverson can hardly believe that just a few months

ago he was replanting acres drowned out in spring rain storms.

“We didn’t have any indication that the growing season would turn into this,” says the Chester, S.D., farmer.

Although it looks like most of his acres will yield this fall, depending drought stress, some plants in the fi eld did not produce ears, so overall yield will be less than average.

He acknowledges that his situation is much better than many South Dakota crop producers.

“Several of my neighbors are already chopping their corn for silage,” says Alverson. “But in this area it’s a far

cry from areas south of I-90 where it appears that the majority of corn is being chopped for silage. In my area, acres harvested for silage will be about 25 percent more than nor-mal.”

Chopping acres for silage seems to be one solution many have turned

to during one of the worst droughts on record, says Bob Fanning, SDSU Extension plant pathology fi eld specialist.

“Th is is one of the most severe droughts I’ve seen in this area. It came on early and it came on quick,” says Fanning, who works with grow-

ers in south-central South Dakota.

Whether the state’s corn produc-ers will see a crop or not depends on timing and small diff erences in moisture he says. Some received cool enough temperatures and just enough moisture to allow for pol-lination, many more did not. If they

determine pollination was not successful, he says before chopping for silage, growers need to fi rst check with their crop insurance adjuster.

In some cases, growers may be further ahead leaving the crop on the fi eld and tak-ing advantage of the plants’ nutrients in 2013, says his western South Dakota coun-terpart, John Rickertsen.

“If the corn is taken off the fi eld for hay or forage, the fi elds will be left without cover. Growers may be better

off to leave the corn out there. The nitrogen and other nutrients in the plant will return to the soil and can be used next year,” says Rickertsen, SDSU Extension agronomy crops field specialist.

Rickertsen says most of the dryland corn crop in the western half of the state never pollinated. He adds that because of the drought, high nitrate levels make much of the corn toxic to livestock unless it’s ensiled – so haying or grazing the crop isn’t even an option for many corn growers.

Although the corn crop is lost for most western South Dakota farmers, Rickertsen says it’s too early to see how the drought will impact more drought tolerant crops like safflower and millet. And, even though the drought for most western South Dakota counties began last fall, Rickertsen says many were able to harvest a winter wheat crop.

This was the case for Harlan Eisenbraun, a cow/calf producer who raises wheat, safflower, millet

and alfalfa 20 miles north of Wall.

“The winter wheat planted into fallow ground did OK, but anything planted on contiguous crop-ping ground wasn’t good,” says Eisenbraun, who is in the process of culling 25 percent of his herd because of the lack of grassland forage and hay due to the drought.

Eisenbraun says at this point his safflower is look-ing fair. It’s too early to tell on millet.

If growers do see some moisture late in the season, Rickertsen encourages them to consider planting a late-season cover crop into their corn fields cut for silage to build up the soil this fall for the 2013 crop.

“Diverse cover crop mixes can do a lot of good,” Rickertsen says.

Due to the widespread nature of the drought, South Dakota’s livestock producers’ options are limited, says

Bill Slovek, past president of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and a third-generation rancher who operates a cow/calf herd 23 miles northwest of Philip, S.D.

“Th is drought is so widespread. In years past you could take your cows 100 miles away and fi nd grass or hay. Th is year you can travel 300 miles in any direction and you’re still in the

drought,” says Slovek, who ranches with his wife, Penny, and son, Bo, 25. “We don’t have the option like in years past to ship our cows and have others feed them. Th ey don’t have feed either.”

From droughts past, Slovek says he’s learned to always keep a two-year supply of hay on hand. He has enough hay saved up to feed his cows for almost three winters, but because his pastures are dry, he will need to begin dipping into his supplies long before winter.

“The problem isn’t that I don’t have enough hay to get me through winter – it’s that I don’t have enough grass to get me to winter,” says Slovek. He has managed his pastures with intensive rotational grazing since 2001. In years past, that has increased his grass pro-duction by as much as 25 percent.

Anticipating feed issues, Slovek sent his grass yearlings to the feedlot in mid-May instead of mid-September, and sold all the cows that didn't have a calve in mid-May. He was fortunate to find summer pasture for about 10 percent of his pairs, sold 10 percent of the cow herd in July and is currently making arrangements to send calves to the feedlot in late August – he normal-ly sends them in late October.

“This will take pressure off the pastures, and because the cows aren’t lactating, they will need a third less to eat,” says Slovek, who adds that South Dakota cattle producers aren’t alone. “I heard that 71 percent of beef cows in the U.S. are in drought conditions.”

A few miles away, Myron Williams is making similar decisions. A fourth-generation rancher, Williams raises winter wheat, safflower, corn and

manages a cow/calf and background-ing operation near Wall, with his sons, Marty and Monty.

Williams’ hay fields, which typically produce 1,000 bales of hay in dry years and upwards of 2,500 bales in good years, only yielded 50 bales this year. Even though he has enough hay saved from the last few years to get him through winter, he’s concerned because he’s already feeding a group of yearlings in his feedyard because his pastures never greened up this spring.

With hay at $200 a ton and the price of grain increasing each day, he and his sons have already invested a consider-able amount of money in securing grain and began stocking up on hay and corn this spring. They chopped most of their corn for silage and plan to cull their herd, but are waiting to see if cattle prices bounce back.

Adele Harty, SDSU Extension cow/calf field specialist, says that variations of Slovek’s and Williams’ stories are repeated across ranch country.

“Finding hay is on producers’ minds. It’s very important that they find hay for winter and because pastures are stressed, many will need to begin feed-

ing this fall if not before,” Harty says.

She reminds producers to test forages for nitrates before feeding and explains that through ensiling or blending with other feed sources, most forages can still be fed. Nitrate quick testing is available at all SDSU Regional Exten-sion Centers.

“This is not a quantitative test, but it gives producers the information on

whether they need to send the feed to a lab,” Harty says.

She says testing feed is also important to determine its nutritional value. The sooner they know what their supple-mentation needs are, Harty says, the sooner they can lock in prices.

“The price of supplement is increasing dramatically. I picked up a new load of DDGs the other day and it was $20

Her northeastern South Dakota counterpart, Warren Rusche, says the manage-ment decisions Slovek is making are ones all South Dakota cattle producers should consider sooner than later. However, he says every decision comes with a cost.

“Early weaning works great to reduce feed requirements of the cow. Although when you’re selling calves early, you are selling less weight, which translates to less dollars,” he says.

Rusche also encourages early pregnancy testing to aid in the culling process.

Along with feed supply issues, the drought has also impacted water supply and quality. Rusche has seen death loss due to water poor water quality across the state and encourages all producers to test their water for sulfates and blue/green algae.

When both his sons chose to farm after college, it didn’t surprise Lewis Bainbridge, a

third-generation Ethan, S.D., farmer.

“As little kids they called the basement the ‘little farm,’ and would have their farm toys spread all over. When we were harvesting on the farm, they’d be harvest-ing on the ‘little farm.’ They both have always shown an interest in farming,” says Lewis, 62, of his now grown sons,

Neal, 28, and Matt, 31.

A 1972 plant science graduate of South Dakota State University, Lewis was the first in his family to attend college. He and his wife, Charlene, insisted that both sons do the same before they returned home to farm full time.

So, that’s what they did.

In 2004 Matt received his general agri-culture degree and agronomy minor from SDSU, returned to Ethan to farm his grandmother’s farm, which he purchased his second year of college. And, in 2007 Neal purchased a neighbor’s farm after graduating from SDSU with a general agriculture degree and minors in ag busi-ness and agronomy.

“We both always knew we’d return to the farm, but also that we needed a broad

education in agriculture first,” Matt says. “These days, farmers need a broad knowledge base in all different aspects of agriculture – animal science, agronomy, agriculture business, economics. That’s what our college exposed us to.”

“And a social network of friends involved in agriculture,” adds Neal. “I’m always running into people I met in college

whether it’s another farmer or someone working at the local elevator.”

Today the three men work together, sharing labor and equipment; however, they each own their own land, equip-ment, and market their own crops and livestock.

“It’s been fun watching my sons grab a hold of things and figure things out. I’m able to stand back more and more and

just watch,” Lewis says. “It used to be that when new technology came out, I was the one who had to figure it out. To-day they figure it out and then show me.”

The Bainbridge family raises corn, soy-beans, winter wheat, alfalfa, and operates a cow/calf and backgrounding operation.

land he and his sons farm today. Lewis purchased this land from his uncles in 1977, after a five-year stint flying helicopters for the Army.

For as long as he can remember, conservation has played an integral role in his family’s farming techniques and land management.

“I grew up with conservation. My dad implemented it in all his farming practices. We had grass waterways, rotational grazing and minimal tillage early on. One of

my uncles was on the conservation district board, so our family has planted acres of trees over the years,” Lewis said.

He and his sons continue the tradition, farming 100 percent no-till for more than 20 years and implementing new conservation methods like planting cover crops into winter wheat stubble.

Although the drought has taken its toll on their crops, Lewis says he can tell that no-till makes a difference in

retaining moisture, as the plants in their no-till fields hung in there longer than neighboring fields that were not no-till.

“We’re only here for a short time so we need to preserve what we have and make it better for the next genera-tion,” says Lewis, who is a new grandpa. His son Neal and his wife, Tara, have a newborn daughter, Charlie.

in state and national agriculture organiza-tions. Following in his uncle’s footsteps, Lewis has served as a district supervisor with the local Conservation District, has been involved in the local Pork Produc-ers organization, is a founding member of the South Dakota Corn Growers and served on the board of directors as a member and chairman. Lewis currently serves on the board of directors for the United Soybean Board. His son, Matt, currently serves on the board of the S.D. Soybean Research and Promotion Council.

“I saw my dad’s involvement for so long and wanted to become involved in an or-ganization that was proactive. I wanted to become a spokesperson for agriculture,” Matt says. “Agriculture is our career and it has a huge impact on our entire state’s economy. What goes on in agriculture impacts everyone in a big way.”

“In the area where we farm there are a lot of guys my and Matt’s age who have also returned home to farm. We’re pretty landlocked. We can’t find enough land to be just grain farmers,” Neal says.

In years when they receive average mois-ture, the cattle complement their grain operations, providing enough income to make each farm work financially. Last year the cattle grazed cover crops and corn stalks until mid-January. This year’s drought means the men have been busy culling their herd, cutting silage and sell-ing calves a few months earlier than last year.

Because they are unable to increase acres, Matt says they also put a lot of energy into maximizing yields on the acres they do farm. The family has yield data on each field dating back to 1990.

“We can pick up trends in different fields and understand which areas need more attention,” Matt says. “We know if we need to soil sample differently, where we can increase planting populations, and

when we try a new technique or seed variety, we basically have side-by-side comparisons to see if it was a good deci-sion.”

Matt says when it comes to making management decisions the three men find value in each other’s experience and strengths.

“We all have strengths and qualities that we bring to the table. We work well to-gether,” Matt says. “It makes me incred-ibly proud that as a family we’re able to continue what was the life’s success of the farmer before us, build on that suc-cess and make our own opportunities to provide for our families.”

forward-thinking women in ag

A typical day for Julia Davis begins with checking bulls and livestock water before she drives 38 miles to Buffalo where she works as a legal assistant for the state’s attorney’s office. It ends with preparing supper and sharing it

with her husband, Douglas, on their Camp Crook, S.D., ranch.

Like many South Dakota ranch wives, life for Davis, 48, is a balancing act, split between work on the ranch, her career in town, and her role as a wife and mother. Although she wouldn’t have it any other way, at times Davis admits she can feel overwhelmed and isolated.

“Out here we’re in the middle of nowhere. This is what we choose, and what we love, but it is isolating at times. When you go through challenging times, or have to make tough decisions, you feel like you’re the only person in the whole world facing the situation,” says Davis. At least that was how she felt until she partici-pated in the six-week Annie’s Project course in 2007.

Hosted by SDSU Extension, Annie’s Project was designed to bring together ranch women, like Davis, to empower them by providing them with ranch man-agement training and to connect them with a network of women in agriculture.

“Annie’s Project showed me that other women dealt with the similar issues on their ranch. We’d be discussing something, and someone would say, ‘You deal with that, too? I thought I was the only one,’” Davis says.

Davis’ experience is one of the key reasons SDSU Extension developed the woman-focused course, says Robin Salverson, a cow/calf field specialist with SDSU Extension and an instructor for Annie’s Project.

Originating in Illinois, Annie’s Project was designed specifically for women in agriculture – to help them evolve into better business partners on the farm and ranch. The six-week course includes training in developing financial records, communication skills, retirement and estate planning, marketing and various production topics.

“Women play a critical role on the ranch, farm and throughout the agriculture industry. We notice that in many classes we hold, the traditional ag audience of men attend. Annie’s Project provides the opportunity for women to come together and learn,” Salverson says.

Davis agrees that attending a class with other women allowed her and her peers to speak more openly than they would if it were a mixed group.

“I don’t think we would have spoken as freely if our husbands attended with us. Not that they wouldn’t have encouraged us to speak up, it’s just many of us wouldn’t have felt comfortable sharing or asking questions in front of other women’s husbands,” Davis says.

ing in the Belle Fourche area that they reconnected.

A few years after they married, they had the op-portunity to return to Douglas’ family’s ranch. So, with their small savings, they purchased 70 ewes and began building up a cow/calf herd. Working side by side, they raised their now-grown sons, Jake and Tra-vis, on the ranch. About the time her sons reached middle school age, Davis began working in Buffalo to supplement the ranch income. Today they raise sheep and cattle on the land 15 miles south of Camp Crook.

Before she participated in the Annie’s Project course, Davis says she and her husband never thought much about retirement. The class changed that.

“Forward thinking is difficult to do. You work day-to-day, you try to think about the future, but it’s easy to get tunnel vision, especially in times like this with the drought and water situation,” Davis says.

After she was forced to fill out a form in class that asked questions about where she saw herself, her family and their ranch five, 10 and 20 years into the future, Davis and her husband met with a financial planner.

Her bookkeeping also changed after taking the class. Prior to Annie’s Project, she says bookkeeping on their ranch was a laborious task which she always meant to put on her computer, but never found the time to do. After taking the course, she went home and put her books on the computer.

“It makes my taxes much easier,” Davis says. “Along with ranch bookkeeping they talked about the markets, balance sheets and cash flow - things that I knew about, but didn’t understand fully. Once I un-derstood the reasoning behind them, I began doing my books differently and communicating with our banker differently.”

She wasn’t the only one learning. Davis shared the marketing and production information with her husband. Together they implemented some manage-ment changes.

“We’ve stepped out of the box in the way we market our livestock and we began age and source verifying,” Davis says.

this doesn’t surprise sAlverson. “When women learn, they don’t keep new informa-tion to themselves, they share what they learn with others. Whether it is with their husband, brother or business partner, in every class I see women taking the information they learn in class and sharing it,”

Salverson says. “That is what is so powerful about this program and so powerful about women gaining knowledge and understanding.”

Since it began in 2007, Annie’s Project courses have been held in 19 communi-ties across the state. The next class is scheduled for White River this September. Because the curriculum is flexible, Salverson says no two classes are exactly alike. She explains that about 50 percent of the content is fixed and the remaining is dictated by what the women want to learn.

Salverson adds that the women learn at least as much from each other as they do from the instructors.

“Annie’s Project is also about bringing women together and letting them net-work. Women attend who are in their 20s and 30s and women attend who are in their 70s,” Salverson says.

It’s been five years since Davis completed the Annie’s Project course and she says the network she developed is still growing strong.

“Just last summer a gal from my class called me and asked if I had a sheet from class that she’d lost. She asked me if I tried a strategy we discussed, and how it worked out for us. Here it had been five years, and we were still learning from each other.”

SDSU Hosts BBQ Bootcamp in Brookings Aug. 29

BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU Meat Science Department partners with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council and South Dakota Pork Producers to host a BBQ Bootcamp, Aug. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Brookings on the campus of South Dakota State University in the Animal Science Complex.

The BBQ Bootcamp is designed to provide an intensive, hands-on, fun opportu-nity to enhance the understanding of meat cookery, barbequing, smoking, food safety, new meat cuts, and nutrition of meat products. Each participant will be provided with recipes, a meat thermometer, and the program will end with a large meal allowing participants to sample the products cooked and discussed during the program.
