Once again, San Juan Preservation Trust members and the island community cametogether to protect a dramatically beautiful, ecologically sensitive and much lovedproperty. This time it was Watmough Bight on Lopez Island.

People from throughout San Juan County and beyond contributed to this project,but it was the Lopez Island community that mobilized all of its resources to conservean area of tremendous importance to Lopezians. Local fundraising efforts includedlemonade stands, young ladies selling friendship bracelets, restaurant tip jars, proceeds from sales at the Lopez farmers market, benefit performances by localartists, and a teen “Fight for the Bight” concert. These efforts, when combined withgenerous matching gifts from island families and the ongoing support of San JuanPreservation Trust members, allowed for the purchase and subsequent protection of the -acre property that was destined for development.

The Preservation Trust contributed $, from its reserves (funds previouslydonated by members) and raised an additional $, from the community. TheSan Juan County Land Bank, a public agency, contributed $, to the $.million project. The Land Bank will own and manage the Watmough Bight conservationarea. The Preservation Trust will hold a conservation easement to ensure it remainsin its natural state and publicly accessible in perpetuity.

Much of the success of this project is due to the generosity of Tex Gieling, a neighborwho owns the remaining private property inside the bight. Tex made this an attractivetwo-for-one deal by donating her land adjacent to the -acre property, giving the public even more land to enjoy. Her gift will be appreciated by the communityfor generations to come.

In , volunteers provided hours of service to theSan Juan Preservation Trust. Some of the people behind thenumbers include Land Steward Jack Lanning, who monitorsour Decatur and Jack Island preserves and joins our fieldwork“parties.” When he isn’t working on our behalf, you mightfind Jack sailing or strumming the mandolin with a Celticband in Anacortes.

Ulanah McCoy has built bluebird nest boxes, pulled Englishivy and improved walking trails. She is also a big help at ourisland events. Wave to Ulanah when you see her in her FedExtruck on Orcas.

Randy and Barbara Schnabel serve as volunteer Land Stewardsfor our Guemes Island Peach Preserve. They visit the property regularly to report on uses, possible misuses, and wildlife activity.

When Gretchenand Lyman Hullfirst visited this-acre propertyone coldNovember day in, it made adeep impression.“We realized fromthe beginning thatthis was a uniqueproperty,” Lymanrecalls, “and this

became more apparent after the Preservation Trust prepareda conservation plan for us.” Spanning the southernportion of the “North Big Henry” peninsula, fromNelson Bay to Haro Strait, a conservation easementprotects a -acre meadow, , feet of waterfront,tidelands, mixed conifer forest, wetlands, and a groveof quaking aspen trees uncommon on outer islands.

mosquito pass preserve (Henry)

The HenryIsland isthmus,which forms thecrossbar of thedistinctive “H”shape of HenryIsland, is hometo an abundanceof unique

wildlife and native plant communities. The PreservationTrust, with support from the San Juan County LandBank, raised $, in to protect this sensitivetidal salt marsh. The project included two phases: Theacquisition of a -acre meadow, marine shoreline andforested upland, and the “bargain sale” purchase (atbelow market value) of a conservation easement fromthe adjacent landowners, Kip and Barbara Smith. Bycombining these conservation methods, , feet ofshoreline and acres of exceptional open space andwildlife habitat have been permanently protected.

2 lacrover farm conservation easement(San Juan)

Recognizingthat this hiddenvalley south of Mitchell BayRoad containedprime agricul-tural soils,Gwen Wilsondonated a con-

servation easement on her land to the PreservationTrust in to maintain the possibility for farmingin the future. Enter Katie Hover and PaulLaCrampe, organic farmers that found exactly whatthey were looking for in these acres. “In terms of what we need to farm, this land has all the essentials,”said Paul, “It couldn’t be more perfect.” Operatingtoday as Lacrover Farm, a local supplier of organicmeats, eggs, fruit, berries and vegetables, GwenWilson’s vision for her land has been realized.

3 marsh hill wildlife sanctuary conservation easement (San Juan)

In , prior to selling their -acre property onthe west side ofSan Juan Island,Mat and KatherineMottolaapproached thePreservation Trust

to discuss ways to ensure that the marsh, forests anddiverse wildlife habitat on their land would remainintact in perpetuity. This discussion led to the veryfirst conservation easement donation ever recorded on San Juan Island. Robert and Charlotte Lally purchased the property soon thereafter with the conservation easement in place, and remain faithfulstewards of the property to this day. The Mottolas –who have since moved to Lopez Island – continue to be among the Preservation Trust’s most dedicatedvolunteers and supporters.

a mix of conservation easements and a PreservationTrust preserve. “The Trust provided leadership andfundraising support to a broad group of neighbors,”said Scott Spadafora, a Eureka neighbor. “I hope oursuccess will motivate more neighbors to considerworking together to protect land,” added GretchenLambert, another Eureka neighbor who, with herhusband Charles, also donated a nearby conservationeasement on their property.

mt. ben preserve (San Juan)

In , the Preservation Trust and the San Juan CountyLand Bank jointly acquired the summit of Mt. Ben, a-acre hilltop parcel on the southern shoulder of Mt.Dallas. This transaction included a significant pricereduction from Jean Walkinshaw and Martha Wheeler,the previous landowners, who approached the partner-ship to discuss options for conserving the property. Withthe addition of an adjacent -acre property, which thePreservation Trust purchased in , more than acresof rolling meadows, undeveloped ridgeline and oldgrowth trees have been permanently preserved. A publictrail system will provide access to unobstructed viewsover the surrounding islands and waterways.

hannah conservation easement (San Juan)

To honor his family’s heritage, Bernie Hannah donateda -acre conservation easement on his farm to thePreservation Trust in . The farm provides a vividcontrast to a housing development on adjacent landthat was once owned by his uncle. Bernie says this is exactly the fate that he wanted to avoid with hisacreage. “It was my grandfather’s wish that the farmremain in one piece,” says Bernie. “There aren’t that many places like this left on the island.”

8 pile point conservation easement (San Juan)

Surrounded by rugged shoreline, pristine pocketbeaches and terraces of rocky headland, the historicPile Point marker serves as the official reference forTurning Point of the U.S. and Canada boundary.For more than years, Brooks and Susie Ragen haveenjoyed this -acre Pile Point property with theirfamily, and in donated a conservation easementto the Preservation Trust. “Our desire has alwaysbeen to have this place stay in our family,” Brooksexplains, “but forever is a long time, so we haveensured that there are restrictions in place that willprotect the land in perpetuity.”

straitsview farm conservation easement (San Juan)

Straitsview Farm, a -year-old working farm east of False Bay, provides an iconic vista to all who travelalong False Bay Road. Pastoral terrain that surroundsthe historic barn leads gradually down from the pub-lic road to a rugged coastline noted for abundantpopulations of eagles, otters and passing orcas. Boband Evelyn Doran donated a conservation easementon the -acre farm in to ensure that its primeagricultural land remain without structures, and topreserve the expansive public views over the Strait of Juan de Fuca. “We’re grateful that we can contributesomething back to the community, the island andsociety,” said Bob.

red mill farm conservation easement (San Juan)

San Juan Valley is the heart of San Juan Island, andRed Mill Farm serves as the valley’s soul. In , after donating a -acre parcel to the Preservation Trust to protect bald eagle nesting habitat, Dodie andErnest Gann followed up by protecting their adjacent-acre farm with a conservation easement. Red Millis a working farm, and the Ganns’ visionary gift willkeep it that way, forever providing graceful viewsacross San Juan Valley that would have otherwise beentransformed long ago into a checkerboard of smallranchettes. “It gives me a very warm feeling to knowthat long after I’m gone, this will still be here,” says Dodie.
