To feel a part of something larger than oneself, some would say, is essential. Those who would not describe that sense of belonging as essential might at least concede that it is meaningful. Engagement with others fosters understanding; understanding encourages openness; and when we are open, each one of us is capable of great compassion. Here at Kennebunk Land Trust we are exploring this trail, this path if you will, of reaching toward richer and more meaningful connections within our community. Kennebunk Land Trust has served the community for 43 years. We believe that the work of the Trust over those 4+ decades has played a noteworthy role in shaping not only how “we” look today but also who “we” are as a community. We are a community that cares about nature and land and recreation. We are a community that cares. KLT’s success and its strong support from loyal friends are testimony. Conservation does not stand outside of or apart from other priorities, and it cannot be done in isolation. At the Trust, we recognize that in order to endure, conservation must be seated in the everyday choices we each make, we also know that conservation must have a steady home in our hearts and minds. As the poet, Kathleen Raine wrote, “Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all.” Nature needs us and we need nature. We understand that healthy land, water and air are interdependent on a healthy community. That means all of us must fully engage in the conversation to define and foster a healthy community. We believe that strengthening the community will strengthen conservation and vis-à-vis. We need each other. Over the next several months, the Board and Staff of KLT will initiate and participate in a series of “conversations” throughout the community. These conversations are intended to invite and nurture a dialogue about interests and needs we have in common, challenges we face, and creative and inspiring possibilities for the future. 1 A Community That Cares L EGACY L AND A NEWSLETTER OF THE KENNEBUNK LAND TRUST Winter 15 Alewive Woods Preserve is perhaps KLT’s “crown jewel” property.

We’re excited to let you know we’re planning our Fifteenth, yes, our Fifteenth Annual Dinner and Auction. The party will take place on Friday, May 8th, at The Coastal House in Wells. Advance reservations are required and must be made before April 24th. We have several surprises in store for you this year, and one of them is our good friend and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux. With years of experience handling everything from Hermes, Tiffany and Cartier to pop culture items, Kaja will enliven the evening and his proven track record will get you bidding high. Joe Foster will make an encore appearance and, as always, is sure to amuse.

Our annual auction raffle will feature the customary three prizes:1st – Dinner for 4 at The Nonantum Resort, 2nd – $100 GC Estabrooks

Nursery, and 3rd – $100 cash from KLT. Raffle tickets are available through Board members or by calling the office 985-8734. And remember, you don’t need to be present to win – we’ll call you.

As many of you know, our work to make this another smash hit is underway and we’d love to have your help. Whether with a program ad or the donation of an item, there’s surely a way you can participate. To figure out how, or to make a suggestion, please call the KLT office anytime at 985-8734.

Plan to join us on Friday, May 8th, for a very fun evening and help us raise important dollars for the Trust. In the meantime, visit our website regularly at www.kennebunklandtrust.org to preview some of the great items that will be auctioned that night.

Great Maine Outdoor Weekend - Join Us!As part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, KLT will host two events. The Trust invites you to participate in the fourth in a series of “Naturalist Walks” as well as a snowshoe trek/hike.

On Saturday, February 14th, from 10:00am to 12 noon join Tony Liguori and Gordon Collins to explore the Eastern Trail and KLT’s Clark Preserve. The walk will focus on plants and animals in the middle of winter in a mixed conifer hardwood forest. The Clark Preserve, adjacent to the Eastern Trail, is a forested 90-acre tract that has over 2,000 feet of frontage along the Kennebunk River.

On Sunday, February 15th, experienced woodsman and KLT Board member, Scott Gasperin, will lead a snowshoe trek at Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary beginning at 1:00pm and ending at 3:00pm. Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary is nearly 40 acres and boasts beautiful estuarine overlooks with over 2,400 feet of frontage along the Mousam River.

Both events will include conversation about outdoor life in mid-winter and, if conditions allow, exploring for bird and mammal tracks. The event is snow or shine, but weather will dictate whether showshoeing or hiking is most advantageous. Please note that snowshoes are not provided. Participants should come prepared for a winter outdoor event that is easy to moderate in pace. Please leave dogs at home.

Advance registration is not necessary. To learn more and to find notices of location visit Kennebunk Land Trust’s Events page at www.kennebunklandtrust.org.

Directions to the Eastern Trail and the Clark Preserve: From the intersection of Rte 1 (Main St.) and Fletcher Street (Rte 35) in Kennebunk, proceed west on Fletcher Street for 1.8 miles. After crossing I-95 bear right on Alewive Road and drive .9 miles. Turn right into the entrance for the Kennebunk Elementary School and proceed to the parking area near the entrance to the Eastern Trail on the right. (Lat: 43° 24’ 59” N; Lon: 70° 33’ 35” W).

Directions to Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary: From the intersection of Main St. (Rte 1) and Water St. in downtown Kennebunk, travel down Water St. to the end. Parking along the roadway just before the Kennebunk Sewer District is permitted.

Hope to see you there!

As I sit down this last day of 2014 to write my message for this newsletter, I’m taking a look back and reflecting on the successful year we had at the Kennebunk Land Trust. While I usually prefer to look forward, sometimes you have to take a look back before you move forward… the future is shaping up to be a year of “New” – New Year, New home, New full-time Office Administrator, and New challenges and opportunities await us.

After seven years, we outgrew our office space and moved to our new location on Brown Street. We are now closer to downtown Kennebunk with more space, more parking, better visibility, and complete handicap accessibility. We hope you will stop by and visit us.

We have expanded our part-time administrative position to full-time, and I am pleased to introduce you to Annica McGuirk. An important part of Annica’s work is to generate

new opportunities for exposure, including expanded media postings through Facebook, Constant Contact, and web page announcements. She will help to increase awareness of the Trust through community outreach. I hope you will come in to introduce yourself and welcome her.

Perhaps one of the most exciting events that happened in 2014 was that Kennebunk Land was one of three Land Trusts in the state of Maine to be selected to participate in a pilot program known as the Initiative for Community Impact, Collaboration and Change. This initiative was funded by a grant through the Maine Coast Heritage Trust by the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation. The Board and Staff will work to explore ways to have a greater impact on our community while also striving for an increasingly sustainable and relevant future. The Board and Staff are investing significant time, energy, and willingness to adapt to broad community needs.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to you, our supporters, for your commitment to saving the places that bring health, comfort and joy to our lives. We share one common mission: to protect the places that we most value. We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to increased focus, passion and productivity in 2015.

Happy “New” Year! by Isabel Lescure, Board Chair
