EVENTS AT LANCASTER CASTLE

Tuesday 27 February – Saturday 22 MarchDemi-Paradise Productions presenta promenade production of

OTHELLODir: Louie Ingham

Othello the Moor, a charismatic general employed by the Venetian state, has secretly married the much younger Desdemona, much to the fury of her father, Senator Brabantio. Iago, a junior officer nursing deep resentment against Othello, enlists the help of Roderigo, a disappointed suitor of Desdemona, to plot his superior’s downfall. When Othello is given command of a task force despatched to Cyprus to repel a threatened invasion, Desdemona sails with him along with her companion Emilia and the general’s aristocratic lieutenant Michael Cassio, newly promoted over Iago’s head. Iago plants the suspicion in Othello’s mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio, driving Othello into a passionate and uncontrollable jealousy.

Arguably the most psychologically compelling and heartbreaking of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Othello remains the world’s most famous play of love turned bad through unfounded jealousy.

The awesome yet intimate backdrop of Lancaster Castle’s famous law courts and medieval Hadrian’s Tower are the perfect locations for the Venetian state and citadel of Cyprus.
