Wednesdays in Lent
Two more Wednesdays remain on the Lenten
“Meal & A Message” schedule. On April 3rd Heaven
Bound will host, and God Squad will be the host
group for April 10th. Just a reminder — the meal is
served at 5:30 & worship is at 6:30 P.M.
Easter Lily Orders Being Taken
It’s time once again to place your Easter lily orders. The cost will be $9.00 each, and the deadline for ordering is April 10th. Pick up an order form in the narthex at church, or call the office at 927-3420 to place your order.
Holy Week Worship Services
April 18th ........ Maundy Thursday Worship, with First Communion for our 4th graders at 6:30 P.M.
April 19th ........ Good Friday Worship, with special music by the choir, at 6:30 P.M.
April 20th ........ Easter Vigil Worship at 5:30 P.M.
April 21st ........ Easter Sunday Worship at 8:00 & 10:30 A.M.
God Squad Events
God Squad will meet at the Delaware County Food Bank on Saturday,
April 13th
at 7:50 A.M. to help pack Easter baskets for the needy. We
will then walk over to the church and fill Easter eggs for the egg hunt
on Easter Sunday. We will plan to be done by 9:45 A.M., and you can
pick your child up from the church. I'd appreciate a parent or two
staying to help on the 13th
as Connie is not available that date. Please
RSVP to me, Brenda Palas, by April 10th
if your child can attend.
God Squad will be hosting the Easter Egg Hunt at church on
Easter Sunday at 9:15 A.M. in the Sunday School wing. God Squad
members should meet after the 8:00 service to hide eggs. There
is NO Sunday School that day, therefore parents need to stay
with their children during the Easter Egg hunt.

Happy Easter! He is Risen! G.I.G. will resume on April 23rd and we will begin our study on Spiritual Gifts. We will review the two sessions already covered before
Lent, so if that time didn't work for you we are hoping that this time will.

Stewardship Update
The topic of Stewardship and giving is not an easy one to speak or write about. It makes some people feel very uncomfortable. Both speaker and listener share long moments of angst when the topic is raised. So I came across a funny anecdote...
As a man and his family drove home after church, he was complaining about everything. He said, "The music was too loud. The sermon was too long. The announcements were wordy. The building was too hot. The people were unfriendly." He went on and on complaining about virtually everything. Finally, his very observant son said. "Dad, you've got to admit it wasn't a bad show for just a dollar.”

Campership Assistance
The First Lutheran Endowment Fund
has a limited amount of funds to dis-
tribute for campership assistance.
These funds are available to any of
our FL youth who plan to attend a Lutheran sum-
mer camp. The student will pay the registration
fee, and First Lutheran will pay up to 80% of the
cost of the remaining camper fee. Contact the
church office to apply!
Sunday School News
Reminder: There will NOT be any chil-dren’s Sunday School held on Easter Sunday. Also, May 5th will be the last day of Sunday School until fall.
Men's Lenten Breakfasts
The Men's Lenten breakfast theme is “Why Me, Lord? Job -- A Study of Faith & Hope”. There are two Saturday breakfasts remaining before Easter. They begin at 7:00 A.M. The dates & hosts are:

Easter Brass Ensemble
We will again be having brass play for wor-ship services on Easter Sunday. If you are in 9th grade or older (no age limit on the “older!”) and play a brass instrument, we hope you’ll join us! A special invitation is ex-tended to our high schoolers, and feel free to bring a brass-playing friend!
Please let Kathy Moorhouse (927-5594) or the church office (927-3420) know by April 10th if you can join us so we can schedule a rehearsal date and Kathy can get music to you. Come “Make a Joyful Noise!”

“The Day Without Ushers”
I’d like to say this was a one-time occurrence. I’d like to say it will never happen again. I’d be wrong. But one day, at one worship service, we had no ushers.
It was a beautiful, almost-spring day in March in Iowa. After a terrible winter it was most welcome to see the sun shining and a little bit of melting in the yards and streets. Our first worship service was full. Full of people, yes, but also full of excitement. The choir was singing. Amidst the season of Lent, the hymns, prayers, and lessons were prime…it was an over-all feel-good time.
Some visitors were being shown around the church by seasoned veteran welcomers and Sunday School hour was underway. About 15 minutes prior to the second worship service it was time for the pastor to transition from education to worship again. A quick glance at the cast of characters for the service…acolytes, greeters, lay reader, ushers…ushers? The pastor felt as if he was in the middle of a bad Buellerian dream…“Ushers? Ushers? Ushers?”
This will be okay. They have gone without ushers before and people have stood up and taken care of business. There is a steady feeling of “See the Need, Meet the Need” in this congregation. It is likely that someone will see that there is a need for this vital roll and will stand up to the task at the right time as they have done before. There is only wonder if one day the preacher is missing, will someone feel God’s call to speak a word of forgiveness in his stead?
People began to be seated, some after the beginning of the announcements, which happened often. They found seats in a less than full service. There were a number of children - a light roar of activity in the pews. Children bring life to the service even when they turn around and make faces at their pew neighbors behind them, even when they drop fish crackers in the pews, even when they leave for the third time to go potty.
The simple but familiar liturgy began. Confession, absolution, prayer, lessons. The sermon was aver-age at best, but appropriate for the Sunday. The pastor has the ability to hook the congregation in well, but occasionally flops on bringing the message home. The hymn and creed were familiar as were the prayers. The familiarity of the liturgical rites saves the congregation from irregular tempos and second guessing.
The pastor asked the congregation to be seated so that “those who are ushering” could collect the morning’s tithes, offerings, and gifts. He purposefully used that language in hopes that SOMEONE would realize that there wasn’t a fully fielded team for the service. He went to the chancel to grab the plates only to turn around and realize that this truly was a day without ushers.
No one stood up to collect the offering. It felt as if they were all in the midst of that lecture in college when the professor asks an obscure question from the text that nobody has read and the entire class goes digging in their collective backpacks for a pen or gum or distraction. It was a day without ushers.
As a slight panic turned into the problem solving resolve that the pastor has been gifted with, he mo-tioned for the acolytes to pass the plates and collect the signs of God’s gracious love. They had never done this before. A quick tutorial and they were off. Whew. They brought back the blessings and with a quick prayer of thanks at the altar, the crisis has been averted. So the pastor thought.
The Eucharist holds a central part of the worship service. If worshipers do one thing during worship, it is to share in the Eucharist. It is preaching, prayer, confession, absolution, sending, and much more in one sacred motion. The words were said and the prayers were prayed. The helpers were invited for-ward, but remember that this day was a day without ushers.

The absence of ushers helping people to begin the pilgrimage forward to the altar rail was replaced with awkwardness. The familiar was broken as if every car was at the same intersection with green lights all around. Tables were either over-filled or not full enough. Those visitors? They had no clue how to operate or to even know if they were welcome at the table for real because the friendly, open arms of an usher were not there to guide them to the right spot.
The meal had ended, the blessing was shared and the final hymn was played. The congregation was greeted and they were on their way full of peace and grace enough for the week ahead. God’s grace is big enough for this, but this was a day without ushers.
Maybe it isn’t just the ushers. Maybe it is any position of need in the congregation where a volunteer takes their place. What if one day there weren’t communion helpers, lay readers, choir director, pas-tor? You see, this is a spiritual discipline, not just the drudgery of a sigh and questioning if it was “my turn again”? As a Christian, it is ALWAYS YOUR TURN to serve in such a time as this.
God said in Isaiah 6:8 “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying,“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” There is no questioning, absence, or confusion here. There is no blank spot in a bulletin. Just a lot of get up and GO! Ushering is a big deal in the life of the church. An usher holds a vital role in helping the lost be found, the gifts to be shared, and the grace of God be given to the people. Be an usher. Hear God’s call.

College "We Care" Packages!
We want to show the young adult mem-bers of our congregation away at college how much WE CARE! During the month of April leading up to Easter, we will have an area in the narthex where you can drop off goodies and supplies that will be put into care packages for our college students.
Here are some ideas: gum, candy, snacks, pens, pencils, post-it notes, quarters for laundry...you can even write notes of en-couragement! The only limit is your im-agination! Let's show our college stu-dents how much our church loves & ap-preciates them!
Parents: If you have a student away at college, please give their address to either Tanya Burnett, Pam Burke, or Lisa Guetzko. Thank you!
