A long, long time ago, a kind old woman lived next door to a young woman. The young woman had a very fierce mother-in-law. One day, the mother-in-law chased the young woman from the house. She said she had stolen some food. The young woman went to see the old woman living next door.

Dont be unhappy! the old woman said. You can stay with me. I will think of a way to make your mother-in-law ask you to return.

A few evening afterwards, she called at the mother-in-laws house. She carried a lamp in her hand.

Ah! she cried. My dogs have stolen some food. Can you please give me a light for my lamp? I want to go and look for them. When I find them, I shall give them a good beating. They have given me a lot of trouble.

Afterwards, the mother-in-law thought about what she had said, Perhaps my daughter-in-law did not steal the food, she said. Anyway, she really does not look like a thief. She decided to ask her to return home.

Several days later, the young woman met the old woman again. She thanked her for her help. It is nothing, the old woman replied. But now you will understand that it is not always easy to make people believe the truth.

King Sagara had two wives. One of his wives gave him sixty thousand sons, the other gave him one. I know it takes some believing, but that is what the story says.

The one son was called Asamanjas. The others were called the army.

Asamanjas was not a nice person at all. He made all the people miserable. So King Sagara threw him out of the country and played with his grandson Ansuman instead.

One day the King decided to set free a horse. The horse was allowed to go wherever it wanted. Everyone had to follow the horse even the Kings 60,000 sons. If anyone stopped the horse it was taken as a challenge to a fight. The 60,000 sons were very much looking forward to someone stopping the horse, but no-one did. The sons stopped looking. Then they lost the horse.

They were so annoyed at losing the horse that they dug up the whole world looking for it. They dug so deep that they dug up the elephant Virupasksha, who carried on his head the whole world with its hills and forests, and when he shook his head, earthquakes followed. They dug up three more elephants, to the south, the west and the east and . eventually they found the horse in a deep cave where a magician lived. The magicians name was Kapila. He was so annoyed that 60,000 pairs of feet came marching by to disturb him and that they threw rocks, trees and boulders at him that he turned them all instantly to ashes with his fiery look.

King Sagara heard of all this and sent his grandson Ansuman to say sorry.

Ansuman went to meet Kapila and found the pile of ashes that were once his uncles. Kapila thought that Ansuman was such a nice young man that he decided he would send the 60,000 sons to heaven by floating them down the River Ganges. The only problem was that the Ganges hadnt started as a river at that time and was sitting in heaven. The King tried to get the river to come to earth, his grandson tried, his great-grandson tried and finally his great-great grandson Bhagiratha tried.

He asked and asked and pleaded.

At last, the river agreed to Bhagirathas pleas, but was afraid that when it landed on earth it would make too big a splash.

So the great Lord Shiva agreed to carry the river gently to earth it fell into his matted hair and dripped down gently.

Bhagiratha was asked to show the river where to go. So he mounted his horse and the river followed him.

Eventually they reached the place where the ashes of the 60,000 sons lay.

In this place the ashes were mixed with the water of the Ganges an Ocean was formed there. This is now the Bay of Bengal

(A true story)

PART 1

Ruth Becker was twelve years old in March 1912 when she traveled from India to England with her little brother, Richard, aged one, her sister, Marion, aged four and their mother. They were on the way home to the U.S.A.

After traveling by boat through the Suez Canal and across the Mediterranean Sea, they arrived in England. They planned to cross the Atlantic Ocean to the U.S.A in a famous new ship, the Titanic.

The Titanic was the biggest and most modern ship in the world, and this was the first voyage. It was as long as three football fields and eleven stories high. The newspaper said the Titanic was like a palace. They also said it could not sink.

When the Titanic left England, the weather was good. For the first four days, the passengers enjoyed life on the ship. Then, on Sunday, April 14, the weather turned cold. The northern part of the Atlantic is near the Artic Circle, so there were icebergs in the water. At 11.40 p.m. a lookout saw a big iceberg 500 meters ahead. An officer tried to turn the ship, but it was going too fast and the Titanic hit the iceberg.

At first, nobody was worried. Just after midnight, Ruth and her mother woke up. There was a strange silence because the ships engines had stopped.

Ruths mother got up and spoke to a steward outside her cabin. He said, Dont worry. Its only a small problem,

She went back to bed, but some time later a steward knocked on their door and said, Put your life jackets on and go up to the lifeboat deck.

Do we have time to dress? she asked.

No Madam, you have time for nothing. The ship is sinking.

THE EARTHQUAKES

Through the action of the plate tectonics the crust of our planet is always moving. Over millions of years the continents drift from one place to another. They jostle together and push up mountain ranges. The movements do not take place continuously but in small jerks and jumps. It is these jumps that set up the vibrations that we call earthquakes.

The forces that sometimes move the crust of the earth work all the time, and cause stresses to be built up in the rocks. Eventually the stresses become so strong that they make the rock map. The rock whip along a crack called a fault, and this movement causes an earthquake shock. The shock wave travel outward from the focus, the point where most of the movement takes place, like the ripples from a splash in a pond. The point of the earths surface directly above the focus is called the epicenter. Most damage is usually done there.

When the pieces of the earths crust snap a long a fault, they usually move too far. Later they may spring back some distance and produce aftershocks, and this may continue until the rock masses have settled. Then the stresses begin to build up once more until they are released by the next earthquake.

The different types of shock wave produced by an earthquake travel at different speeds. Geological observatories around the world can detect them with instruments called seismographs. By timing when waves arrive, scientists can tell how far away the earthquake was. A world network of observatories can now pinpoint any earthquakes focus.

The places most likely to have earthquakes are the edges of the earths surface plates. Where the plates are jostling each other and being created or destroyed. But earthquakes cannot be predicted

Its the best water Ive tasted in all my life. Come down and try it yourself. The goat thought of nothing but how thirsty he was. So he jumped into the well. When he had drunk enough he looked around but there was no way to get out. Then the fox said, I have a good idea. You stand on your hind legs and put your forelegs against the side of the well. Then Ill climb on your back, from there Ill step on your horns, and I can get out. And when Im out Ill help you out of the well. The goat did as he was asked and the fox got on his back and so out of the well. Then he coolly walked away. The goat called out loudly after him out. She was beautiful and clever but also pampered and spolited. One day as she was weaving in her pavilion, she became moody and distracted, which caused her to keep dropping her shuttle on the floor. Once when it fell she exclaimed she would marry the one who gave it back to her. At that very moment her dog Tumang, a demigod possessing magic powers, came up to her with the shuttle in his mouth. Dayang Sumbi had to marry him. They lived happily together, and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy, human in appearance but endowed with his fathers magic powers. She named him Sangkuriang. As the boy grew up, he was always guarded by the faithful dog Tumang, whom he knew only as a companion and not as his father, Sangkuriang became handsome and brave. One day his mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her venison for a feast. After hunting all day without success, Sangkuriang worried about facing his mother empty-handed. Desperate, he took an arrow and shot the dog. He returned home and handed over the meat to his pleased mother. Soon after the feast, however, Dayang Sumbi questioned her son about the absence of Tumang. At first he evaded her queries but finally told her what had happened. She was horrified and struck her son so hard on the temple that he collapsed. For that, the old king banished his daughter from the court and she was made to roam around the kingdom. Sangkuriang recovered with a large scar on his temple, and he too left the court to wander about the world.Years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman and instantly fell in love with her. It was his own mother-they did not recognize each other. He pro posed to her and she agreed to marry him. On the day before the wedding, as she was caressing her fiancees hair, Dayang Sumbi detected the scar on the temple. Horror struck her, for she was about to marry her own son, Sangkuriang. Without revealing the whole truth to him, she tried unsuccessfully to dissuade him. Desperate to avoid the marriage, she set conditions she thought impossible to meet. Sangkuriang had to make a lake that filled the whole valpley and build a boat for the couple to sail in, all before dawn.Sangkuriang started to work. His love gave him extraordinary strength, and he used his magic powers to summon the spirits to help him. With boulders and mud they dammed the river in the valley and the water rose and began to form a lake. In the early morning hours he chopped down a huge tree in the forest and began hollowing it out to make a boat. When Dayang Sumbi saw that he was about to accomplish what she has thought impossible, she called on the gods to bring the sun up early and thwart Sangkuriang. The cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang realized he had been deceived. In a fit of fury he caused Dayang Sumbi and kicked the half-finished boat back into the forest. There it lies upside down today, forming the mountain Tangkuban Perahu (Upturned Boat). Not far away is the stump of the tree Sangkuriang had felled, now called Bukit Tinggi. The dam Sangkuriang had built caused the valley to become a lake, where both Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi drowned themselves. In the olden times there was a king who was so cruel and unjust toward his subjects that he was always called The Tyrant. So heartless was he that his people used to pray night and day that they might have a new king.

One day, much to their surprise, he called his people together and said to them, My dear subjects, the days of my tyranny are over. Henceforth, you shall live in peaces and happiness, for I have decided to try my rule henceforth justly and well.

The King kept his words so well that soon he was known throughout the land as The Just King. By and by one of his favorites came to him said, Your Majesty, I beg you to tell me how it was that you had this change of heart towards your people.

And the King replied, As I was galloping through my forests one afternoon, I caught a sight of a hound chasing a fox. The fox escaped into his hole, but not until he had bitten by the dog so badly that he would be lame for life. The hound, returning home, met a man who threw a stone at him, which broke his leg. And the horse, starting to run, fell into a hole and broke his leg. Here I came to my senses, and resolved to change my rule. For surely, I said to myself, he who does evil will sooner or later be overtaken by evil.
